Dr Adrian Harrop, who the funk does he think he is?

If you're not familiar with this supposed physician (yes, really), then you need to get over to Twitter and see this.

Harrop seems to spend most of his time harassing and insulting natal women whilst unquestionably supporting trans women. He is hiding behind his "medical expertise" and using it to shout women down.

It's both hilarious and terrifying! Shock

Thanks, I agree with 1, 3, 4 and 5, but anyone with a medical degree is qualified to practise medicine. After getting their degree most doctors in the UK do two years as Foundation doctors, rotating through different specialisms as they start to think what they want to specialise in, then three years on a specialist training scheme (what used to be called SHOs) followed by a final three years of further specialist training (used to be called registrar level). At the end of that if all has gone smoothly they will be consultants if they are going to be hospital doctors. GP training is similar but out in the community. Some people take time out along the way to do locum jobs, research, teaching, travelling, maternity leave and so on.

I don't know where the vile Dr H is in the process but he's definitely qualified to practise medicine. A brilliant registrar delivered my daughter by emergency CS, so I feel a bit invested in the status of registrars!

Oh Adrian,

You thought when you did that medical degree that women wouldn't be allowed to laugh at you ever again.

You thought we'd mistake you for someone clever.

But we're laughing at you.

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 10/05/2018 11:13

Questions re Adrian:

  1. why are his bosses allowing this and has anyone complained?
2 if he's just a trainee why is he misrepresenting himself as fully qualified to advise?
  1. What "valuable lesson" does he want Olivia to learn?
  2. Why isn't he at work?
  3. Has anyone recommended that he read "Men Explain Things to Me".

Dr Harrop thinks that paedophilia is ok if it's a cultural norm for grown men to marry children.

I suggest that Dr Harrop looks into the maternal mortality rate for those child brides who end up dying in labour when they're raped by husbands more than twice their age. Or the girls who are left with fistulas from labour injuries who then get abandoned in huts because they bring shame to the family.

I wonder whether it's pure sexism or also racism which causes Dr Harrop to think that it's a question of moral subjectivity for young African girls to be subject to such a life?

AncientLights · 10/05/2018 10:48

I do think there is a big difference between doxing a private individual and someone who parades their professional status in no prof-related matters, posting pics if themselves in scrubs with the obligatory stethoscope around the neck. While possibly violating their professional code. If they are reported & exonerated, no harm done surely?

R0wantrees · 10/05/2018 10:37

link to thread with Dr Helen Webberley (GenderGP)'s article which mentions her discussions with Dr Harrop.

megletthesecond · 10/05/2018 10:34

He's nasty, along with Jensen. They rounded on that poor woman on twitter who spoke out about how hard parenting is.

MaidOfStars · 10/05/2018 10:31

Oh, and I think I lectured him when he was an undergrad. facepalm He certainly didn’t get his mixed up views of biological sex from me.

ProfessionalBarren · 10/05/2018 10:18

I also find the way he uses overly convoluted language to express his points when he thinks he's dealing with Joe Public really fucking offensive. Longs words do not equal critical thinking and just because we don't agree with you doesn't make us thick. Do you think he speaks to his patients like that? I haven't disliked someone on SM this much for a long time.

nauticant · 10/05/2018 10:16

Although this is about as far from doxxing as one could imagine.

Even involving the GMC is fair game since Harrop is using his status as a doctor to push forward a contentious political position. (As well as apparently endorsing a death threat that was made to a woman.)

LangCleg · 10/05/2018 10:07

Vile man.

I don't like it when TRAs doxx and report to employers, so I'm not keen when "our" side does it either - slippery slope and where do you draw the line? He seems to be in a training hiatus at the moment in any case - not yet fully qualified but not employed working towards qualification?

That said, if he got professional sanctions for his behaviour on social media, I wouldn't have any sympathy at all.

terryleather · 10/05/2018 09:55

He appears to be inviting people to complain about him to the GMC from what he's posted on Twitter...a freakin ego that can be seen from space, what an utter fudd he is.

AncientLights · 10/05/2018 09:48

I know Harrop has posted that a man reported him to the GMC, the sex of the person seemed to surprise him - all boys in this together maybe? - but there's nothing to stop other people reporting him. It should be easy to get the standards drs are expected to uphold and measure him up against them. Then report him. My next project, I think. Don't think I am encouraging anyone to start a campaign against him though - perish the thought.

LizzieSiddal · 10/05/2018 09:46

It makes me feel very uncomfortable that his profile pic is of him in his hospital uniform. Does any other Dr on social media do this?

LizzieSiddal · 10/05/2018 09:43

Nonsuchfun thanks for posting those guidelines. He’s certainly contravening several of them.

ToeToToe · 10/05/2018 09:42

In short I don’t think nurses or midwives (who are mostly female) would get away with this sort of behaviour and I’m surprised it seems to be acceptable for Doctors.

How very, very surprising. Women held to a higher standard than men - again.

TrumpTrump · 10/05/2018 09:26

What annoys me more is the class issue at play here. If he was a working class "chav" spouting this kind of misogyny, you just know that there would be a pile-on to put him in his place. However because he's a doctor, it's somehow okay? SadAngry

Hi - I’m new here but have been educating myself from a distance thanks to Mumsnet, and just have to dive in here as my blood boils every time this unpleasant man pops up in my timeline on twitter.
Apologies for making my first post such a long one.

I find this “trans women are women” Dr deeply concerning as I think the ability to distinguish between men and women is a fairly basic level of knowledge that most all women expect from a Dr.

I think women also expect to be treated with respect, so it is very concerning to find a new breed of younger Dr’s fully paid up to patriarchal paternalistic “I trust you will learn a valuable lesson from this Olivia” attitudes.

I do wonder where he is working at present - in January he was popping up on TV news giving (not unjustified) dire statements and warnings about the winter crisis in the NHS. (Plenty of clips on google). He worked at Scarborough A&E then, but they have confirmed he is no longer working for them. I wonder if he has rotated to another job, as GP trainees do or if Scarborough were less than happy with his media activities. NHS trusts do not look kindly upon this sort of behaviour. Which makes me wonder about his future employment prospects.

I also note, from google, that he has set up a private Dr Adrian Harrop Ltd company. For what I wonder? Heaven forbid this labour activist is moving into private practice? Or maybe he can’t get another job in the NHS and is reduced to doing agency work paid through his personal contracting company? Or preparing for that longed for media career.

I would fully expect to be warned and disciplined by my employer if I behaved as he does on twitter, and I am surprised that the GMC seems to have a very liberal attitude to Drs on twitter as he isn’t the only one unafraid to besmirch his profession out there.

Here is a section on Professionalism and Trust from the NMC Nurses and Midwives code of Practice (available on line):

20 Uphold the reputation of your profession at all times
To achieve this, you must:
20.2 act with honesty and integrity at all times, treating people fairly and without discrimination, bullying or harassment
20.3 be aware at all times of how your behaviour can affect and influence the behaviour of other people
20.5 treat people in a way that does not take advantage of their vulnerability or cause them upset or distress
20.7 make sure you do not express your personal beliefs (including political, religious or moral beliefs) to people in an inappropriate way
20.10 use all forms of spoken, written and digital communication (including social media and networking sites) responsibly, respecting the right to privacy of others at all times.
For more guidance on using social media and networking sites, please visit: www.nmc.org.uk/guidance
21 Uphold your position as a registered nurse or midwife
To achieve this, you must:
21.5 never use your professional status to promote causes that are not related to health, and
21.6 cooperate with the media only when it is appropriate to do so, and then always protecting the confidentiality and dignity of people receiving treatment or care.
In short I don’t think nurses or midwives (who are mostly female) would get away with this sort of behaviour and I’m surprised it seems to be acceptable for Doctors.

MaidOfStars · 10/05/2018 08:55

He’s an idiot. And if he’s reading this:

I highly suspect that you are breaking GMC and RCGP social media guidelines by posting such extreme politics on your professional profile. I suggest you make a new account.

R0wantrees · 10/05/2018 08:55

@niska, also worth reading KateMiddleton1965's comments towards the end of the thread:

AncientLights · 10/05/2018 08:55

I had once liked him because he was one of the junior doctors who were speaking out against NHS cuts and he recounted the appalling effects he was seeing daily as an A&E doctor. But now I view even that through the prism of 'twat seeking celebrity & doesn't care how he gets it.'

niska · 10/05/2018 08:48

Thanks so much for those links, thebewilderness. My interest/research is partly because I was raped by an HCP as a teenager.

GenderApostate · 10/05/2018 08:26

He works in Scarborough a+e dept. apparently. He seeks out the limelight like a typical pathological narcissist, under the guise of caring ever so deeply about patients. I feel sorry for any woman who comes under his ‘care’ at Scarborough, hero/saviour complex comes to mind.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 10/05/2018 08:08

I also think Pink News is a front.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 10/05/2018 08:06

I can't help feeling that he is a confidence trickster paid by a sub company of Cambridge Analytica.

The timing - he popped along just when everyone started focusing on biology and reality was gaining traction in the discourse. Then this "medic" comes from no-where talking ridiculous bollocks with the specific intention of winding up feminists who are winning the biology argument.

I can't take him seriously because nothing he says would be said by someone at the beginning of their medical career.
