Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Has anyone else just discovered that they are a RadFem?

I'd always thought of myself as a liberal feminist... yup, feminist to the core and ready to fight for women and girls where appropriate but not that knowledgeable - and happy to enjoy the fun of being a women (summer dresses, sexy flirting, beautiful bodies) while acknowledging the horrors (FGM, rape, systemic inequality)....

But who knew it.... It just takes the words Transwomen are men ... so very obvious to me on so many levels.... to turn me into a RadFem....

And I've moved from being happy to encounter the occasional Transwomen in the Ladies (in well-populated, chatty scenarios like clubs) ... treating us with respect and being treated with respect... to not wanting a Penis in any sex-segregated arena...to feel threatened by the incursion of men on "our" spaces....

to sleeping badly and wondering what kind of world we are developing for our DC where playing with the boundaries of gender stereotypes (like Boy George) is less acceptable and the blue/pink divide has become so much more entrenched and the almost automatic reaction to any gender dissatisfaction in the young is to explore whether they are trans, rather than their just questioning and exploring society and their role within it....

They can make it for transpeople and for women who don't mind sharing that space with them.

That is fairly dismissive ThisIsTheFirstStep.

It is pretty clear you have no idea what has been happening to the women's sector (Women's Aid, Rape Crisis) over the last eight years. Funding attrition/blackmail. Have you never stopped to think that abused women, fleeing from possibly a life and death situation, really don't have the niceties or energy to deal with THIS, the one on the right of screen btw ?

TRAs will never 'start their own shelters'. They never wanted that to begin with. They wanted ACCESS to women's shelters, for various reasons, none of those good reasons.

IfNot · 11/05/2018 09:23

Well yeah-it's not like men went "I know, let's set up women's refuges".
Reguges were grassroots organisations, set up by women for women.
That's why it pisses me off when men go "where are all the men's refuges?"
Er..set one up?

Sorry Erishkal I see what you mean now RE young women.

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2018 09:19

What they are objecting to with this is a shelter not allowing trans identified males to work there as rape counsellors. The shelter takes trans clients.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 11/05/2018 09:10

What I don't get about the trans activists getting mad about being shut out of women's shelters etc is why, if they want shelters etc so badly, they don't start their own?

They can make it for transpeople and for women who don't mind sharing that space with them.

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2018 09:00

I more was talking about online. Sorry I should have made that clear.

[Young women]
They see so much evidence of how much men hate women
See I would very much disagree with that. As a teenager I certainly felt powerless and kind of..laughed at, but men were generally universally nice and helpful to me until I got past late 30s. Yes I got cat called, and hated it, but they were shouting "complimemts".
It's funny that I'm not usually cat called now, but if I was I wouldn't give a shit. Im not intimidated by men anymore.I'd probably show them my arse like a baboon.

was reading an account of transactivists targeting a sweet shop in Vancouver. Their crime was to put up a poster giving details of the Vancouver rape refuge.

Yes, I read about that. Disgraceful bullying.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 11/05/2018 08:18

TRAs would rather kill an org that supports their number, than let them exist without capitulating to all their demands. Seems 'logical'

That's a very important point to keep reminding people - and an illustration those TRAs are not interested in the issue of trans rights at all, but of access to vulnerable women

womanformallyknownaswoman · 11/05/2018 08:16

I've always been a feminist but never got into the theory of it all. I don't know if I am a radical feminist, but everything indicates I am, for the critique of transgenderism and not less importantly for the stance of prostitution and pornography. One thing for certain I am not and never have been a liberal feminist

I think this applies to many and I don't like the label radical feminist - but the term feminist has been undermined and tainted by libfems. The feminist theory and its buzzwords can get in the way of women, I fear, who know right from wrong and want a fair go for all women.

Feminist didn't label themselves radical.
I'm an ordinary old-school feminist who's had their views cemented as life hurled its challenges at me - I have well and truly woken up and I am angry at the groundhog day experience I have lived

LaSqrrl · 11/05/2018 08:12

@Datun
VRR is still being bullied. Transactivists will never forgive them for not allowing a misogynistic man to become a counsellor of abused women. Or anyone who supports them.

Yes sadly true. And that is because the Trans Borg will accept nothing less than total capitulation to their way of thinking. And yet, VRR continue to take on trans clients, even despite all the harassment? That is a stunning display of humanity and caring by VRR. And the TRAs/handmaidens will never stop, until VRR is run into the ground.

Gee, tough call as to who is in the right here!

Has anyone else just discovered that they are a RadFem? the alt-right.
And yet your virulent anti-feminism keeps alluding you? Radical feminism is nothing to do with the Right, Alt-Right, or the Left, or any of the usual male politic labels. It exists OUTSIDE of the male politic framework. Class Woman is victimised by both sides of male dominated politics, and stands outside of both.

Basically, by calling radical feminism 'alt-right' you are trying to scare women away. Shame on you. What are you doing on a feminist board anyway? It certainly is not for contribution. More like obstruction.

I hate that dude-bro so much now!

I watched the first few seconds and could't watch anymore - she's so coercively controlled she doesn't know it - I knew that on IWD 2017 when she said "lets not forget the men" - poor woman.

I hate that dude-bro so much now! Peoplekind ffs Trudeau. If you want to see something genuinely hilarious check out this video. I laughed so hard I did a little wee when I saw it - damn my cis-privilege!

womanformallyknownaswoman · 11/05/2018 04:00

Vancouver is a war zone on a rather low simmering but constant war on women. The transgender identified male advocates vandalized the Vancouver Women's Library within days of it opening.

The enabling of the TIM and his flying monkeys to stalk and harass, over years, the Vancouver rape refuge and their supporters, is rule by mob - since when was that legal?

Re Canada - Trudeau does a great job of covering his tracks with his "woke-bro" cover.

It happened gradually for me. I was definitely all about the liberal feminism and freedom of choice and so on.

When you realise that there is so little freedom of choice for most women, it's eye-opening. Yay, I have the freedom to wear lipstick or to not, how incredibly thrilling!!

The trans madness was the final nail in the coffin.

The sweetshop owner was bombarded by negative reviews and intimidation.

UpstartCrow

Lass, I made a pun, which I have explained to you. I have no idea why you leap on so many of my utterances and feel the need to start a thread about them, but its tedious

What are you on about? I got your pun. I was asking a question if there was a connection bewteen radical feminism and socialism- given Lippy had made that point early on the thread.

How do you manage to interpret that as "leaping on your utterances"?

Is there a connection? Lippy seems to think so. If there is then radical feminisn is not an ideology I could support.

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2018 01:14

Yes. I think many women (especially younger ones) are in a bit of a Stockholm Syndrome situation. They see so much evidence of how much men hate women, and it's easier to play along with it rather than be targeted for abuse. It's also easier to blame the women it happens to for being TERF or SWERF or right wing or whatever so they brought it on themselves. And to shut it out as if not they would have to try to do something about it.

IfNot · 11/05/2018 01:08

I'm not sure I am one.

All I know is that since about age 14 I was enraged at the unfairness of being female.
I had a period of complacency in my twenties when I used my fake power (being pretty) to buy minor advantages. I still would have called myself a feminist at the time, but I despised men for being so easy to manipulate if I'm honest.
Becoming a mother clarified my thoughts and made me think about other women instead of just myself. Hitting 40..I'm back to bring enraged again!
It's not because of the trans thing though. It's sexual assault, FGM, women being shafted at work, lack of political representation, objectification in the media, the hatred of old women, the failure of men to step up domestically, the vilification of single mothers, and the systematic assault on working class women by the cuts. The Internet has also opened my eyes to just how deep the fear and loathing of women goes in some men. Too many men really, and I find that both terrifying and very sad.

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 00:44

This is why I am so upset with the labour party. It's basic Marxism and their inability to understand women's position is an class based analysis is quite frankly baffling...

Left wing doesn't always equate with pro-woman. My socialist dad never saw anything wrong with behaving like an old school patriarch, abusing my mother whilst raving about what a good feminist he was.

Is it just a small minority in Bromentum cheering on the AWS issue or a sign of systemic misogyny? Sometimes I think that left wing 'virtue signalling' politics can be a way to avoid examining your own internalised prejudice and privilege.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 11/05/2018 00:42

Right wing, left wing - they're all against women being women, and all for men being women, no debate. Arseholes.

I don't trust any male centric political party.
