Is anyone else annoyed with Germaine Greers banishment to the naughty corner? She's a living icon and she's just not appreciated properly. It's a real shame the way she is no-platformed and vilified - just because she says women don't have penis'.

I wanted to share some Germaine Greer links that I love. I'm a massive fan and I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys are as well. If you could share your own links, messages, thoughts that would be awesome.

Or rather fails to prevent so many of you holding on to this idea of shame.

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/05/2018 00:00

She probably thinks we shouldn't be embarrassed or ashamed about menstruating and if we rinsed out mooncups in front of men we'd be less self conscious and hung up, and would have a point

I think exactly the same. Other than Kat Banyard's Pimp State I haven't read a single feminist book of theory in my whole life and I won't be starting now.

If feminism leads to or fails to prevent so many of you talking about the shame attached to your female bodies it sounds a miserable failure.

R0wantrees · 11/05/2018 23:50

Completely agree DJLippy though would add, some of us carry radical hysterectomy scars and with them a reminder that because of medical necessity we missed motherhood and hit a surgical menopause which set us apart at that point in our lives from our friends (& sometimes also our hopes). Still uniquely female experiences though...

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 23:39

Our shame stops us speaking about our bodies and what a toll being a woman takes. Because we don't speak about all our troubles we don't get any rewards from society. Because our bodies are shameful we keep quiet about crippling endometriosis (even to our doctors). We keep quiet about the way childbirth has destroyed our bodies. We keep quite about the menopause. Men only have one puberty but we have so many more traumatic bodily processes that we just don't have any cultural recognition of.

Do you think if men gave birth they'd ever stop showing each other the caesarian scars - playing one upmanship on how torn their vaginas got? Do you think they'd have to work through the menopause? You think they wouldn't all be getting drunk and then daring each other to drink their menses?

That's why I love GG. She talks about all these things so direct - so sternly.

BTW who posted that clip of young GG? Gin I love her even more....

It's easier to be dismissive of sex segregated bathrooms when you've stopped menstruating though. Periods seem a distant thing to me and I only stopped a few years ago. I'm sure by the time you're 80 you've forgotten a lot of the mess and hassle of them with your mind thinking of other stuff.
She probably thinks we shouldn't be embarrassed or ashamed about menstruating and if we rinsed out mooncups in front of men we'd be less self conscious and hung up, and would have a point.

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 22:59

@Vicky1990 Yes that's exactly what she was saying. She thinks the English obsession with sex segregated bathrooms is bizarre. GG says so much I don't agree with but she's so smart and thoughtful I always listen. You should check out some of the videos Vicky. You really need to hear her speak to get her true genius. I can highly recommend the first video I posted for some 1993 style girl power style feminism if you want an intro

I think it was a case of "oh fgs, the whole of womanhood is at stake here - don't ask me about toilets. Make them all unisex for all I care"

I think C4 misled her on what she there to talk about - she thought was invited on to talk about The Whole Woman - and was then subjected to Cathy Newman's gibbering.

ToeToToe · 11/05/2018 22:47

Yeah she did say that. I don't agree with her on that- but I think it may have been exasperation at the level of debate tbh.

Vicky1990 · 11/05/2018 22:45

DJ Sorry, she was saying all toilets should be unisex, did she really say this, any body know if this is true??? .

ToeToToe · 11/05/2018 22:44

And she was treated shamefully on that debate. She clearly has more intelligence and knowledge that Caitlyn Jenner, Munroe and Cathy put together.

ToeToToe · 11/05/2018 22:41

Here is a very young, vivacious and highly intelligent Germaine in 1971.

Not caring about what men think of her since 1971 Grin

Peaceloving · 11/05/2018 22:37

Vicky that says more about you than her.

gendercritter · 11/05/2018 22:32

who has messed up her life

Dear god what miserable failures the rest of us must be if you're setting the bar so high. wails

Peaceloving · 11/05/2018 22:29

Grey misty love your sentence 'too busy helping men to manage their feelings' lol

I like and admire GC I don't always agree 100% but l wish I could be half as lucid and energetic as her if I make it to her age. She is a living legend!

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 22:24

I'm behind Sarah in this. I also have a massive crush on her now. She's so on point! Better on TV than MN even.

I think we got this ladies. Venice, Posie, Magdalen, ManFriday, Sarah D - they're just the first over the parapet. Women are getting angry. They're reading. They're talking. They're going to get very very noisy very very soon....

It was clear from the 'debate' that GG is on a different level (intellectually) from others in the panel. Essentially, imv, they 'used' her for their agenda - no respect was given. I did, however, get a distinct feeling during this that she was 'over it' and frankly I wouldn't blame her. I do think that if we (women, you know those of us indentifying with XX) are going to fight out corner we need to have GG 'in the team' but not at the face. In the same way as the TRAs don't want CJ as their 'face'.

GG has the understanding, experience and brains with all of this but doesn't, like it not have the 'face'. Sarah had that in the debate.

To finish, I thought GG looked absolutely fabulous and, as always, has the intelligence, integrity and experience to be fabulous. UNLIKE other members of the panel.

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 22:08

I don't think she meant simultaneously Vicky...

Vicky1990 · 11/05/2018 22:03

Is it true Germaine Greer was on the television recently saying men and women should share the same toilets, please tell me this did not happen.

Greymisty · 11/05/2018 21:35

Grin don't need them I'm an excellent baker and I will persuade her to adore me with biscuits. You can visit if you bring ingredients?

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 01:08

We can share her if you like. I can have her Monday - Thursday and you have her at the weekend. Do you have a basement? And handcuffs? Asking for a friend...

OP posts:
Greymisty · 11/05/2018 01:00

I'll fight you for her Grin word for word im the same! i dont even agree with her all the time but i just respect her so much that I just get all....in awe of her. This is a hippy phrase but I think she has a kind aura.

DJLippy · 11/05/2018 00:56

I've seen pics of her young and I think 'naahhhh' but when she hit middle age - HELLO! Think it's her gravitas that I love.
but I she can also switch to complete vulnerability in a second. I get the feeling she's a really compassionate person. God I really am in love aren't I?

OP posts:
Greymisty · 11/05/2018 00:51

DJ - i thought the same!

Watched the debate today and thought she did great considering the set up and my gawd she looked fab! At 80! She's kinda dreamy really.

nicholascageconfusedface · 11/05/2018 00:42

I think she is amazing, any woman in 2018 that can say 'just because a man lobs his cock off and wears a dress, does not make him a woman' gets my respect. she is based in reality. She is awesome for being 80 years old. The channel four debate was very biased, from seating plans, to allocated time. I don't blame her for being sick of fighting, she has more than served her role for womens rights

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 11/05/2018 00:38

I want to mess up like Germs. I want to be such a failure that I'm not only a towering figure of feminist thought but a respected Shakespearean scholar. I want to fail so badly that I teach in universities, own not only a heritage farmhouse but acres of amazing rainforest. I want to make so many mistakes that even when I'm 80 people will still be asking my opinion.
