Can't view this from where I am, is this one of those situations where TRAs are frothing because they have no sense of humor? As in, is the trailer literally about penises "becoming" vaginas or was it trying to be cute and funny?

Pratchet · 07/05/2018 17:05

Tara Hewitt here

TRA are cross about the trailer. Maybe GQ will be a bit terfy.

I was trying to work out what I would say to them. "Sorry to disappoint but I don't go gender. You're a bloke and you're a green/blue haired young woman with a heightened sense of entitlement

Except the woman on there had a rare chromosomal disorder - so wasn't she possibly intersex?

The transwoman/intersex person (I wasn't clear which) on the right called Brooke had a chromosomal disorder. The non-binary person with green hair called Saffron didn't mention any disorder and IMO appeared obviously biologically female.

It's funny, I could very easily label myself non-binary if I wanted to. There are so many ways in which I do not comply with stereotypical female gender stereotypes. But I don't say I am non-binary because the older I get the more I realise that gender stereotypes are bollocks and that it would be wrong and presumptuous to assume that A) all other women feel like they do identify with the gender stereotypes and B) that those who do present in a stereotypical way do so out of free choice rather than societal pressure.

Italiangreyhound · 07/05/2018 16:15

I just watched this bit which had a clip in it. I thought it was all very much about learning and respecting etc. I wonder how much males are interested in learning about females and showing respect. Maybe we need a new programme on that. But my guess is that that would be considered old hat. 'Gender' is very much the flavour of the month/year/decade.

I do think there is room for films about Gender and about Sex and they should not conflate the two.

I thought this article was quite pertinent to this discussion. It's by a man who transitioned in his 40s and then detransitioned. Makes sobering reading

Glitter Thatcherism

Love this Lang!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/05/2018 10:48

Oh yes! That's a good description of it! Smile

ToeToToe · 07/05/2018 10:45

I just watched the BBC Breakfast interview on catchup - it sounds like the "Great Brainwashing of Tom" Confused

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/05/2018 10:31

Grin That'll do it for me too! I think I'd add I also like and would encourage gender bending just for the hell of it, for the sheer joy of it or the sheer ignorance of there being a problem with it!

But Glitter Thatcherism, Glitter Fascism, Glittery Bullying, Deluded Tinsel... Post Gordon Gecko Angst... yep!

ToeToToe · 07/05/2018 10:29

Same here, Curious. 70s/80s upbringing.

I wonder if it' a backlash against those times to be honest - a conservative backlash. A re-reinforcement of gender stereotypes.

If so, the 'recruitment' of the progressive left, and the policing of the language (to an almost totalitarian state level) is a victory indeed.

It's Orwellian.

LangCleg · 07/05/2018 10:23

I like the idea of gender bending when it is a challenge to patriarchal and class power.

I don't like the idea of gender bending when it is an expression of a hyper-individualised ideology, appropriates other people's oppression and pretends societal power relations don't exist.

I've started calling the latter Glitter Thatcherism.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/05/2018 10:15

I grew up through the 70s and 80s. As has been said on many posts, back then gender bending was something almost everyone did. From musicians in glam rock bands to Annie Lennox, Marilyn to Boy George, Phi Oakey to Adam Ant.

My generation didn't bat an eye lid. Even DH worked on building sites with a hod carrier who wore make up to work and liked slinky dresses in the pub! Nobody cared. He was who he was.

All of this current palaver is a huge backwards step and I don't know what happened to make the next generations so closed minded that this is all deemed necessary!

ReluctantCamper · 07/05/2018 10:08

bend gender all you like and I will cheer you to the rafters. just don't believe you have to pretend you've changed sex to do so.

ReluctantCamper · 07/05/2018 10:07

yes, I would see genderbender as a positive description!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/05/2018 10:07

Except the woman on there had a rare chromosomal disorder - so wasn't she possibly intersex? Did she? I didn't hear that part. I must have missed the very beginning. She still had a very entitled attitude and was very patronising. I thought, based on those couple of minutes, that the trans identified man had a more reasonable, less aggressive attitude!

Though he did seem to say he was fine in real life as he 'passed' very well and had never had any issues with being misgendered!

That's were my socialisation remains... I would call him 'she' to his face, use whatever name and pronoun he chose. But I would not think he was a woman... I would know he is a trans identified man.

In the last year or so I have gone from:
anyone can be whatever the hell they like, to

fuck that, a man is a man, a woman a woman, all gender is bollocks, to

look be whatever gender you want but don't expect me to buy into it...

and now I am veering back to fuck that a man is a man a woman is a woman and gender bending is nothing new, get over yourselves.

I suspect I will stay with that attitude and may well be much more vocal, dismissive. TRAs have a lot to answer for and my personal lack of acceptance is symptomatic of that!

ToeToToe · 07/05/2018 10:06

Thanks Gasp. I will be watching all of these - I strongly suspect they will be against my viewpoint, but I'd like to see what "mainstream right on C4" makes of it.

Btw - Love the I failed at female socialisation Grin

I failed at female socialisation because I don't always say yes to men's demands. A central tenet of feminism is women's right to say NO.

SarahCarer · 07/05/2018 10:05

Some people of both sexes are resistant or immune to the forces of socialisation yetanother but there is a wealth of research showing the differences between female and male socialisation and the exceptions don't disprove the rule.
Terfragette I so dislike the word "genderbenders" Shouldn't all GC feminists be challenging and questioning (ie Bending) gender? The trans celebs cannot be expected to be any less vacuous, self obsessed and nauseating than all the other celebs.

yetanothertranswoman · 07/05/2018 09:56

I don't imagine those choosing to appear on the show will be any different. ANYONE, who is me me me in society generally, gets right on my nerves

I wonder if there is anyone with your views on the show - just to add a little spice?

Terfragette69 · 07/05/2018 09:53

I also failed at female socialisation, which is why I'm sometimes considered a bitch..
🤔 Or a trouble maker...... But hey hi, its hard not being a hand maiden. Whenever I have met gender benders in real life, they have largely been self absorbed, entitled snowflakes. I don't imagine those choosing to appear on the show will be any different. ANYONE, who is me me me in society generally, gets right on my nerves!

I don't think I'll watch much of this season, but here are the details if anyone else wants to. All on Channel 4.

Genderquake - Episode 1 Monday 7th May, Episode 2 Tuesday, May 8, both at 9pm.

In 21st century Britain, what it means to be a man or a woman is changing. Eleven strangers of different gender identities and sexualities spend a week together - with explosive results.

Munroe Bergdorf's documentary What Makes A Woman? goes out on Wednesday, May 16 at 10pm. I might watch that.

Other programmes in this season: Genderquake: The Debate, feminist prank show Riot Girls, Random Acts: The Lady That Dances.

yetanothertranswoman · 07/05/2018 09:48

I was trying to work out what I would say to them. "Sorry to disappoint but I don't go gender. You're a bloke and you're a green/blue haired young woman with a heightened sense of entitlement

Except the woman on there had a rare chromosomal disorder - so wasn't she possibly intersex?

That would have been an interesting conversation though. I wonder if that discussion happened in the house?

Curious Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/05/2018 09:39

The man on BBC Breakfast was trying to be nice. He really didn't want to upset the other people. Yes. And the other 2 talked about him as if he were a child, or somehow not a fully functioning adult!

Their repeated assertions that he needed to learn what they wanted him to do and that it was OK for him to make misgendering mistakes as long as he didn't meant to, started to irritate me. They were truly patronising, the whole section was. I dislike being patronised by men, I see no reason why women need to use the same belittling tactic to make any point.

I was trying to work out what I would say to them. "Sorry to disappoint but I don't go gender. You're a bloke and you're a green/blue haired young woman with a heightened sense of entitlement"
