Lang after I posted, I thought about class too. I'm of Asian decent, but also grew up working class, and I think that class was much more of an obstacle than race in the early years of my adult life and career. So many of today's stars/directors/writers of prominence seem to be the relatives of the previous generation of stars/directors/writers. How do you break into such a nepotistic industry without those contacts?

I would happily watch/listen to Kathy Burke read the telephone directory! She's one of the most talented and underrated actors/writers/directors in the UK.

LangCleg · 08/05/2018 11:34

Or what about social class? Why not, say, Maxine Peake or Kathy Burke to speak about being one of the few successful working class women in the industry?

EchoGivesNarcissusTheFinger · 08/05/2018 11:18

The choice of CJ makes no sense whatsoever, but then neither does LM's petition.

I thought the point of these lectures is about UK based actors and entertainers trying to find roles in the UK industry and not being able to get a break here. (Idris and Riz both having had their major breaks in the US because there was nothing for them here). So to follow on in that theme, surely a British, female person of colour or a trans woman actually in entertainment would be the logical choice; for example, Marianne Jean-Baptiste who had a similar experience to RA and IE; or the trans woman actor whose name escapes me but who appeared on Victoria Derbyshire with Nicola Williams a couple of months back. Or any director, producer, writer etc who is not a white, middle class male.

CJ is nothing to do with the British entertainment industry, nor has CJ struggled in any way whatsoever to become an entertainer (If that's what CJ is now, as distinct from a "personality").

Whilst LM certainly provides a huge amount of entertainment inadvertently, neither LM nor Linda Bellos, Miranda Yardley or anyone outside the relevant field should be giving this lecture. I think LM has confused it with a political event because of the venue.

If I've got the wrong end of the stick as to the nature of this event, I apologise.

PositivelyPERF · 08/05/2018 10:59

I give up! 😳

PositivelyPERF · 08/05/2018 10:58

Oops ^wgat about meee*. 😂

PositivelyPERF · 08/05/2018 10:58

There are increasing numbers of people supporting Lily Madigan's petition against Caitlin Jenner giving the diversity lecture and calling for Linda Bellos or Miranda Yardley to be a replacement.

Somehow I don’t think that’s the kind of support LM had in mind, R0wantrees. I have visions of LM throwing a temper mantrum and shouting what about meee

Hey, Republicans are allowed to speak too. Grin

Oh fuck, does identity politics not 'intersect' with lovely Caitlyn?

2rebecca · 06/05/2018 16:47

Wealthy Republicans are relevant to diversity as well. If you want a diverse range of opinions you have to include right wing opinions too. That's part of the definition of diversity.

R0wantrees · 06/05/2018 16:36

Isn't this just populism, that Caitlin Jenner is the 'most famous person who is transgender' in the world, ever ?

PositivelyPERF · 06/05/2018 16:32

Those comments are brilliant, AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth. I’m sure LM is apoplectic with rage. I wonder how long it will be before the comments are turne off? If they are turned off, I hope people stop signing, on principle.

You are not kidding , quite what this republican wealthy white person knows about Diversity would fit on the back of a postage stamp

there are many better choices to represent Diversity in the UK , such as any black lesbian ! any Gay Disabled, or bitchy old Queen !

but the House of Commons is already full of them

2rebecca · 06/05/2018 16:28

Agree with Pratchett. I wonder if Justine's husband is playing a gender critical long game here.
Agree re the Lily brigade having tantrums whenever a trans person isn't idiologically pure enough for them. Lily is already bullying a Cambridge new Labour councillor for retweeting Debbie et al's letter in the Guardian as being transphobic because they're the "wrong sort" of trans people and now Caitlyn is the wrong sort of trans too.
If C4 eventually pick a woman as part of their diversity panel I won't be spitting feathers because she's the "wrong sort" of woman. Women come with many different ideologies and personalities. That's what diversity is.

noeffingidea · 06/05/2018 16:17

foxyliz thats because no one likes Caitlyn, lol.

spontaneousgiventime · 06/05/2018 16:17

I'm having quite a chuckle at LM and the rest throwing dummies out the pram.

foxyliz26 · 06/05/2018 16:14

For the first time ever one thread that has united the LGBTQ community and mumsnetters against this white middleclass Trump supporter ! I must be dreaming

PositivelyPERF · 06/05/2018 15:32

Change = chance

PositivelyPERF · 06/05/2018 15:31

I fully support how Justine is allowing us to discuss these issues and I’ve had a few posts deleted. I’m actually getting pissed off with people repeatedly bringing up her husband’s job as I thought we, as feminists, were opposed to defining a woman by her husband’s job. She comes across as a very strong woman and I’m sure she’s well able to make her own decisions, regarding Mumsnet. On the plus side, if channel four continues to let enough misogynistic TIMs, as opposed to transsexuals and genuine trans people who intend to go down the full route of transition, on Tv then the more change of people seeing the reality of what women face.

MadBadDaddy · 06/05/2018 11:27

"MN is doing a tightrope act, and generally doing it ok" is putting it mildly and doesn't just apply to MNHQ.

Popchyk · 06/05/2018 09:28

I suspect they think Jenner ticks the woman box.

boatyardblues · 06/05/2018 08:43

It does read more like a ‘diverse males’ list than something truly diverse. No women? No one with a disability?

RosenbergW · 06/05/2018 08:32

To be fair Riz Ahmed and Idris Elba are both very talented actors.

If you had to google Riz Ahmed to find out who he is you're really missing out, he is one of the most talented actors of his generation imo.

picklemepopcorn · 06/05/2018 08:26

I don't think it does. I think some influencers are in a tricky position right now, and that includes Justine. MN is doing a tightrope act, and generally doing it ok.

Sometimes in our rage on here, we do get personal and make personal attacks on people. I think it is ok for MN to draw a line. And yes, what is said here is nothing in comparison to the disgusting talk from TRAs on twitter etc, but that isn't MN's responsibility whereas this is!

OP posts:
Pratchet · 06/05/2018 08:24

Why was Jenner chosen? It's not something a TRA would do. I hope people who've left mumsnet can see what's happening here. So many smoke signals.

Notthatwomanagain · 06/05/2018 08:22

Isn’t Justine Robert’s husband head of channel 4?

Does this explain/give context to the direction of MN Towers recent decisions?
