How is endometriosis transphobic?

SwearyG · 02/05/2018 22:48

I've just been to see a play about endometriosis - which was actually rather funny and much better than the subject matter suggests. As I was leaving someone said to me "gosh that was really transphobic". And I'm struggling to work out why, unless it was because it was about women's bodies and framing endo as a women's issue?

Is it really that simple? That talk of periods, ovaries, uteruses and hysterectomies is transphobic? I know we often take the piss about it a bit on here but to hear it said earnestly has me more than a bit Hmm

Have I missed something? Do trans women have periods now? Do they actually have ovaries, Fallopian tubes, uterus and cervix??

NotCisImaWoman · 05/05/2018 13:03

I'd have eye rolled

Laughed in their face

And asked why

In that order

  • I was also name-checking some amazing gyny cancer charities (by the way) & highlighting the important work that they do!
R0wantrees · 05/05/2018 12:42

However with regards some specific aspects of legislation (aside from gynaecology), it seems the definition of 'woman' may have changed.

R0wan I understood it the way you've described, as an example of how the word 'woman' is used and a demonstration of how ridiculous it would be if we have to attach a different meaning to that word. Definitely not scare-mongering in my book. I think it's important we think about these things.

R0wantrees · 05/05/2018 12:26

LassWiADelicateAir "Your post is scare- mongering"

I am absolutely was not.

I was demonstrating the way that the word 'woman' is used and recognised when discussing gynaecology.

I was also demonstrating that it would be ludicrous to suggest this would change.

dontdoitttt · 05/05/2018 11:49

I'm just going to carry on my life as normal and I don't give a fuck if trans fuckers don't like it.

tinytemper66 · 05/05/2018 11:45

If you were born with a penis you are a man. 😐There is gender dysmorphia but that is a different ball game to men wanting to be a woman.

LassWiADelicateAir · 05/05/2018 11:39

To be clear, I used the examples of Gyny charities to demonstrate that 'woman' had a clear meaning in this respect and made the point that I believe no 'sane' person would challenge this

And those charities are being shut down are they? Your post is scare- mongering.

LaSqrrl · 05/05/2018 11:35

I am currently breathing while femaling. I suspect it is transphobic.

R0wantrees · 05/05/2018 10:54

LasWiADelicateAir

To be clear, I used the examples of Gyny charities to demonstrate that 'woman' had a clear meaning in this respect and made the point that I believe no 'sane' person would challenge this.

They are all wonderful charities, I hope more people support their work. Women's Gyny cancer needs better awareness and finance.

I think Rebecca Riley Cooper's questions have some relevance here:
rebeccarc.com/2018/01/14/some-basic-questions-about-sex-and-gender-for-progressives/
Some basic questions about sex and gender for progressives

  1. Do you believe that being born with the kind of body that has the potential to gestate children – a body with a uterus, ovaries, and a vagina – is of any political significance? Does having that kind of body have any bearing on a person’s likely opportunities and outcomes?
  1. Do you believe that people born with those kinds of bodies have historically been subject to any distinct forms of injustice, oppression, exploitation or discrimination? Have they historically been subordinated to the people with penises and testes?
  1. Do you believe that people born with those kinds of bodies continue to be subject to any distinct forms of injustice, oppression, exploitation or discrimination?
  1. Do you believe that people born with those kinds of bodies often suffer physical and sexual violence, abuse and harassment perpetrated by the people with penises and testes?
  1. Do you believe that people born with those kinds of bodies ought to have a label with which to define themselves? Does our language need a word to refer to the people with uteruses and ovaries?
  1. Do you believe that people born with those kinds of bodies have a right to organise politically around their shared experiences, and to campaign and work for policies to secure their own interests?
  1. Do you believe that people born with those kinds of bodies have a right to associate freely with other people with those kinds of bodies, and to have some separate spaces for their safety, privacy and dignity? Do people with those kinds of bodies have a right to some spaces where people with penises and testes are not permitted to enter?
  1. Do you believe that people born with those kinds of bodies sometimes have a right to policies and resources designated towards rectifying their historical and continued marginalisation and oppression?

If your answer to any of these questions is “yes”, you should reject the ideology of gender identity, and policy proposals based on that ideology such as the self-declaration of legal gender.

KreigersClones · 04/05/2018 22:33

They’ll have endo soon, you just wait and see. And it’ll put all your endo to shame. It will be endo+.
Just like the one on fb who had a period. No blood mind, however blood is only ‘a minor part a period’.

Ereshkigal · 04/05/2018 22:27

Lass I've heard other people whine about endometriosis being called a female issue. I had a massive argument online with someone once.

SwearyG · 04/05/2018 22:22

Lass you do know that some conversations aren't logged on the internet, don't you?

And it wasn't apparently said to one person, it was an exchange between 3 people, but by all means take umbrage at what you decide happened rather than a first hand account.

I am clearly invested in the women's rights/trans rights issue at the moment. If I want to start a thread about things that happen in the real world I have plenty of examples. I don't need to make anything up and I resent the insinuation from you here. Someone said, with their out loud voice, that they found the play transphobic. I cannot fathom how unless it's because it's about female biology. Hence the thread.

I’m with Lass on this.

LassWiADelicateAir · 04/05/2018 20:53

This play was listed on Time Out and all the London theatre listings. The theatre has 28,000 twitter followers and an active Facebook page.

I've Googled and I cannot find a single comment on it by any trans person or trans supporter.

One person apparently heard one very stupid person say something stupid and it generates this level of hysteria. Oh and I don't care that "hysteria" is a banned word on here. I am using it in its colloquial sense and can't think of a better word.

Opheliah · 03/05/2018 16:29

Lady penis. Celebrated.

Lady endemitriosis. Transphobic

OnTheList · 03/05/2018 15:02

Anything about female biology is transphobic.

Odd how seemingly nothing about male biology is transphobic Hmm

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/05/2018 14:03

I wonder what symbol we could use for that @R0wantrees? And what could we wear instead of 'Rasberry Berets'?

ijustwannadance · 03/05/2018 13:21

The thing that's most ridiculous is going to watch something just to purposely be offended by it.
I mean, if you are such a delicate flower that you would be triggered by female biology, why the fuck would you go and watch this in the first place. It's not like you don't know what it will be about!

I also think that woman should not have to alter their language in things like this even if it might offend a trans man. If they have endo it is due to their FEMALE biology. If they want to chest feed etc and not use female terms, thats up to them but it should not be forced on the rest of us.

R0wantrees · 03/05/2018 12:34

Perhaps we will have to follow Prince's lead and become, 'the class formally known as women'?

ChickenMe · 03/05/2018 12:33

Is it saying transwomen have imaginary endo or is it saying transmen have endo and by not referring to transmen you're transphobic?!?
Anyone would think people wanted to have endometriosis

Tartyflette · 03/05/2018 11:58

or 'people born with ovaries or ovarian tissue and including those who may no longer have ovaries/ovarian tissue'....
Word salad, anyone?

R0wantrees · 03/05/2018 11:47

incredibly sensitive!! Except of course to those who have had these cancers though fortunately not everyone is affected.

Opheliah · 03/05/2018 11:42

Of course
Should it be

"The national ovarian cancer charity working to save lives and help people who have/had ovaries diagnosed with ovarian cancer live their lives to the full, wherever they live in the UK"

That's very inclusive and sensitive to everyone right?
