So it would appear that Linda has been arrested and interviewed for saying she would protect herself if the tra's attacked.... What the actual fuck?? This is getting ridiculous we need to act!

Event held in London, Tuesday 22 May 2018.
Organised by the Lesbian Rights Alliance.

Linda Bellos, "I'm a bit of an expert in equality law"

"Other women fought for our rights, not only the right to vote but the right for education, the right to place thoughts and now what do we find? Just as we are beginning to enjoy freedom, a group of young men & older men seek to take away those rights by claiming to be women therefore invalidating all we have fought for. So, as you can probably tell, I'm a bit pissed off. and I do intend to use the law" (continues)

Linda was also more recently part of an interview on The Jeremy Vine show with Jane Fae about #self id and #womanwednesday.

Angry resister: it's cowardly. Unless Woman's Hour does actually want to chuck away the rights of women and girls. I'm sure they aren't stupid so it's one or the other.

Angryresister · 09/05/2018 00:38

Thinks

Angryresister · 09/05/2018 00:38

Listening to a women's hour piece about the the new minister for equalities, a post that no one in the Tory party is of any importance it was striking that while the domestic violence act was talked about the GRA was notable by its absence, again. The same elephant wandered through the studio again.

hipsterfun · 09/05/2018 00:08

... but some part of me was keen to take on the struggle on a wider platform.

[shrieks] Leave it, Linda, he’s not worth it!

Or to put it another way, this outrageous nonsense must’ve been a terrible strain so make sure you’ve taken all the time and space you need before even thinking about getting stuck in again Flowers

OrchidInTheSun · 08/05/2018 21:47

Smile That's great news but either Linda or Posie or both need to report for malicious reporting/ wasting police time

LaSqrrl · 08/05/2018 21:40

Update, from Linda's facebook (public post):

About 30 minutes ago I received a telephone call from North Yorkshire Police informing that the CPS is not minded to pursue the case against me for the words I spoke regarding defending myself if attacked and which were subsequently distorted to imply that I would attack/assault trans women in general. It is a relief to know that sanity has returned to the notion of British justice but some part of me was keen to take on the struggle on a wider platform.

Wanderabout · 08/05/2018 19:43

I hope Linda is doing OK. I saw this article from a few months ago which speaks volumes about how ridiculous this all is.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/oct/06/feminist-linda-bellos-women-trans-male-violence

ReluctantCamper · 08/05/2018 18:35

yes, that occurred to me Pratchet. Surely which ever genius saw fit to put this the police's way should be due a chat about wasting police time?

Pratchet · 08/05/2018 18:30

I hope they pursue the people for the 'subsequent distortion' for wasting police time.

Popchyk · 08/05/2018 17:45

Thank God for that.

I know Linda said she had a seizure at the police station, so I'd hate for her to be under any more pressure than the considerable amount she's already had so far.

Linda Bellos writes today:
Questioning Identity?

"Apparently if I question to notion of gender as a natural category of humans I am being transphobic. I say this because I have received several responses from people identifying as Trans who denounce my thoughts and words as transphobic. What is not clear is whether this denunciation applies to me questioning other categories of identity such as races or social classes. I suspect not, but I believe these also to be ‘man-made categories of human differentiations which have allocated power and status on what are apparently human differences.

Am a lesbian feminist and I say this with some pride because my lesbian feminism has enabled me to look at these ‘man-made’ notions and push them aside. Racism for example is real in that there are people who are treated ‘less favourably’ in society because there are deemed to be from a particular race, this was mainly to do with colour, but Hitler and his ilk identified Gypsies and Jews as well as African peoples as ‘inferior races’ compared with the so-called ‘Master-race.

And whilst women have not been subject to mass extermination we have nonetheless been subjected to rape, general violence, and murder because we are women. This is so widespread that the News reports in the UK do not even bother to mention it on a daily basis- it is just taken as a given, and when it is reported it is because a famous woman has been raped /battered or murdered.

Trans women have been murdered because they are Trans, not many but still too many but who is doing the murder? It is not women it is men. So why the clear hatred that many Trans women are showing to women?" continues...

noeffingidea · 08/05/2018 10:44

LMAO. I don't think that's quite what Lily had in mind when they started the petition.

R0wantrees · 08/05/2018 10:27

There are increasing numbers of people supporting Lily Madigan's petition against Caitlin Jenner giving the diversity lecture and calling for Linda Bellos (or Miranda Yardley) to be a replacement.

see @Skepticat_UK 's twitter posts.

Some history though:

auntycartmanslargertesticle · 05/05/2018 13:54

The Womans place video containing the offence is still on utube. Which is odd. Considering threat to public safety.

Pratchet · 05/05/2018 12:02

Yes I think it's the government waking up as well as local councillors and constituency MPs.

ChattyLion · 05/05/2018 10:53

Pratchet I agree with you too, the bigger picture sounds all too plausible and bloody scary. Was just not trying to claim to know about it, i’m still just getting my head around this area.

But even in the relatively short time that I’ve been reading about it, it seems that UK political ignorance and naivety and misogyny seem to have really raised the temperature by giving some misogynist extremists a cover of what they can point to as apparent Parliamentary and government AND political party support. That is catnip for those with a dogmatic belief in their just cause (justifying violence in some casesHmm)
vs

the actual reality seems to be that the government is perhaps starting to twig some of the scary implications of legalising gender self ID, or perhaps more likely just does not want to have the debate because they can see how it’s playing out and don’t want to go anywhere near it.

This seems to be making things worse for women though, even without the government starting the promised review of what would be a terrible new legal measure. Sad

The extremist misogynists seem to be going at softer targets to silence them, raging at individual gender critical women and trans people, and the venues, including MN who allow them to gather and talk. I agree it exactly what you say, that they feel critical talking literally cannot be borne.

It’s like they are turning on the canaries who’ve just come up from the mineshaft, or something. But seriously, how do they think a review of law would work, if not a critical examination? Would non aligned voices not be allowed to respond? (Unless they run it like that terrible example from the Scottish government).
Again I think the WEC report and cheery response from Nicky Morgan have been very unhelpful because they didn’t really apply any genuinely critical thought about wider impacts and they really made it look like they were likely to proceed without doing that.

Pratchet · 05/05/2018 09:33

I totally agree with you Chatty and I'm sorry if it looked like I was trying to score points. Not in any way. The uptick in misogyny is frightening.

ChattyLion · 05/05/2018 09:30

This whole campaign has been planned for years

Pratchet I don’t know enough about the bigger plan, I am only going on what the Male-violence-minimising/whipping up against ‘TERFs’ type of rhetoric itself is saying about now being a pivotal time because legal change is coming.

Which would seem to link to the Women and Equality Commission report and the government’s initial warm reception to the legal self ID idea, committing to a review of the GRA, then the lack of any activity since then. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/535764/Government_Response_to_the_Women_and_Equalities_Committee_Report_on_Transgender_Equality.pdf

Eg from NUS Trans Officer, in 2017 about the punching at speakers corner:
‘Take another step back and you’ll see that this year is a crucial one for the trans movement. We are on the verge of some potentially important (if still deeply flawed) changes in the law and in healthcare.’
www.nusconnect.org.uk/articles/there-is-nothing-radical-or-feminist-about-transphobia

I think WEC should definitely be looking at what seems to be a rise in misogynist intimidation in the time period since their own report came out.
And if WEC wont, hopefully the joint committee on human rights will pick it up.

FermatsTheorem · 05/05/2018 08:32

I'm just imagining the crazy situation where someone's reported Miranda to the police for misgendering himself (AFAIK Miranda does use "he"). It's beyond parody, and I can't help but find it darkly funny.

Wanderabout · 05/05/2018 08:19

From the recent Mail piece today:

Miss Bellos, who is also facing disciplinary action following a complaint to the Labour Party, said transgender campaigners ‘are specifically targeting me because I am outspoken’. She added: ‘I’m not apologising, I’m not bowing down and I’m not being intimidated. I’m not now going to be swept aside by people who think they are women telling me what it is to be a woman. They are seeking to have me expelled from the party.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5692727/Labour-activist-Linda-Bellos-took-partys-trans-activists-questioned-police.html.

I wonder if the man and transwoman who said it would be ok to punch women with views on women's rights that Linda Bellos holds are also being investigated by the party?
