Terfmore I'm very happy to be corrected... I couldn't find a clear statement.

Terfmore · 23/04/2018 19:47

"Dr Helen Webberley has recently been cleared by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS). She was suspended for a period of time whilst a complaint was investigated."

I don't think that is correct.

Name Helen WEBBERLEY Reference No. 3657058 Area of registered address Gwent Type of order The tribunal determined to maintain an interim order of conditions, with varied conditions, subject to review.

Some conditions were lifted but it is not completely resolved.

The issue of waiting times etc. There is next to no consensus amongst the medical profession about gender dysphoria (which some say is an insulting term in itself). The WPATH standards of care don't seem sure about diagnosis.
The state/we should not pay for something which has such a questionable evidence base.

Some people are sad. Some of those sad people are children. It is not the govts responsibility to make all the sad things go away. Down that path is the kind of liberal - oppressive state that right wing libertarians speak against (and from what I see I think they have a point).

cromeyellow0 · 23/04/2018 19:09

Dr Webberley is quite the entrepreneur as she also runs a service for expats:
www.mywebdoctor.co.uk/expats/

(I first heard about this branch of her business on FWR, sorry I can't give credit as I forgot who pointed it out.)

Quote is from Dr Helen Webberley's article. She is part of 'Gender GP' which is a private practice providing online consultations, specialising in Gender Issues.

I'm sorry I missed the quotation marks.

permanent

It is well known that the waiting times for accessing help for gender variance is far in excess of this.

What exactly do you mean by 'help'?

Is access to a psychologist a longer wait than other similar disorders?

I'm sure that people self-medicate with alcohol and drugs while they wait, but this is different - these are perminant physically altering drugs and young people are diagnosing themselves over the Internet. You seem confident that the confused youth has got their diagnosis correct and the treatment they need.... Hmm

R0wantrees · 23/04/2018 15:36

RefuseToDenounceBiology
Gender GP Dr Helen Webberley's article on Sunday explains why young people may self-medicate:

The concept of self-medicating was not one that I encountered before I started my work with transgender patients. People with diabetes or high blood pressure, angina or epilepsy would not look to the Internet or local gym to source their medication. They would go to their GP and they would get the help they needed. If the condition in question was outside the knowledge and skills of their GP, then they would be referred to a hospital consultant. The NHS constitution states that you should start to receive specialist treatment within 18 weeks, but it is well known that the waiting times for accessing help for gender variance is far in excess of this.

So is it any wonder that children and adults are self-medicating?

Sarah Ditum's tweet on the latest Pink News 'story' nails some of this too:

*Today 14:41 Wanderabout

Sarah Ditum's tweet on this 'story' nails this one:

FFS "users" here = one data-protection-flouting ex-employee's interpretation of what one poster said. And if anything is like Section 28, it's the mad enforced silencing of the idea that children might actually not be "in the wrong body", in favour of blanket "affirmation".

ErrolTheDragon · 23/04/2018 14:43

Oh dear...

An MP trying to smear Liz Truss by propagating the 'section 28' lie.

Bowlofbabelfish · 23/04/2018 14:39

Real, literal violence = physical interaction where someone is / has potential to be hurt. Can result in injury, criminal charges.

Disagreeing with someone on the web = disagreeing with someone on the web. Results in sulking.

I know that sounds flippant but I’m seeing this narrative of violent feminists again and again and if you repeat a lie often enough...

Where is the real, literal (in the proper sense, not the sulky toddler sense) violence propagated from women towards men in this issue? Because I see none.

What I DO see are countless threats from men to women, and incidences of real (actually real, actually literal) violence such as Maria Mac being punched.

Why is this not being pointed out in the media?

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 23/04/2018 14:27

LOL @ Orwellian.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/04/2018 14:16

Orwellian? Ah, the irony.

RefuseToDenounceBiology · 23/04/2018 14:02

I find it concerning the way that language and arguments are being appropriated and twisted to confuse people. Like this tweet from a senior TRA/architect of the shit we find ourselves in, referring to our defence of the freedom to name reality as 'Orwellian'.

(The second one is added because it tells an outright lie. Kids as young as 11 can shop online with a visa debit card).

Yes. I suspect what they actually mean is 'symbolic violence' which is a concept from Bourdieu. It's an interesting concept, but in hindsight very poorly named, because what the TRAs are doing is saying that symbolic violence is just like physical violence. Both are 'literally violent,' therefore if someone 'misgenders' you it's acceptable to hit them in retaliation.

Which is utter nonsense and not what Bourdieu meant at all.

2rebecca · 22/04/2018 18:37

Adult female human

2rebecca · 22/04/2018 18:36

I hadn't realised literal violence meant pretend non physical violence ie not violence at all just a difference of opinion. The word literal has a meaning. Mind you the word woman literally means adult female woman so I guess words and their real meanings aren't TRAs strong point.

R0wantrees · 22/04/2018 14:03

Worth re-reading Jenni Murray's article last year.
“I know that in writing this article I am entering into the most controversial and, at times, vicious, vulgar and threatening debate of our day. I’m diving headfirst into deep and dangerous waters.”

Wanderabout · 22/04/2018 13:50

We need to be able to speak the truth of wanting to support the human rights of people who are transgender and also ask what about women and girls?

This 100%

Doesn't TERF basically mean someone who cares about the rights and wellbeing of women and girls but who doesn't believe men who say they are are women.

So the people saying it's ok to be violent towards them are basically saying this is who it's ok to curb stomp, punch, choke and smash with bricks etc.

R0wantrees · 22/04/2018 13:40

I think its more important to focus on some of those who exert political power or those who are using the power of social media (especially if connected)
Many of the young people who have bought into what can be a dangerous ideology are victims.
Which is not to condone the behaviour.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 22/04/2018 12:29

It's about time we had some support from female MPs. Anyone who has seen those videos of the cowards trying to stop the Bristol meeting has seen the tactics of theser fucks.

Terfmore · 22/04/2018 12:17

Good on Liz for speaking.

R0wantrees · 22/04/2018 12:14

Maria Miller's position was discussed here...
"When Ms Miller, 53, released her report in January last year she was surprised that criticism came not from conservatives but, as she put it, “women who purport to be feminists”. This may be because feminists, well versed in sexual politics and long-time supporters of gay rights, are among the few people who can penetrate the arcane, confusing terminology."

We need to be able to speak the truth of wanting to support the human rights of people who are transgender and also ask what about women and girls?

The issue is one of centring... 'TERFs' are being defined & therefore dismissed by the T(trans) E(exculsionary) rather than the radical feminism.

#Nodebate is about preventing critical thought. Feminist do critical thought and are villanised. The logical reaction to the attempt to stop critical thought should be to ask a zillion questions. Repeatedly.

Eventually they bite.
