The video has had 34 views now. Own goal transactivists (though it might be some time before they realise this)

MushroomGravy · 22/04/2018 17:29

I assume, quite possibly erroneously, that it’s an American thing.

Trends that happen over the past 10 years or so are rarely from any one place. They're worldwide as young people meet and discuss online. Especially in universities. The USA has many flaws but it has a long proud history of free speech and letting anyone spout any old rubbish because you might be spouting shit but I'd die for your right to spout it.

Hate speech laws etc are much more stringent elsewhere than in the US. This is why organizations such as the Westboro Church are allowed to continue in America and would be shut down in the UK. It's something I've always been proud of this is definitely not "American" in any sense. It seems to be a worldwide effort by privileged twenty-somethings who don't have a fucking clue.

Kneedeepinunicorns · 22/04/2018 17:16

we also have to accept that there are trans individuals who are afraid and that they genuinely feel under threat.

This, along with the comment that some are buying into the propaganda, frames it as a problem that GC women should take on the responsibility for solving.

That also frames GC women as the grown ups who not only can bu morally should put aside their own feelings and needs in order to meet the needs of the more vulnerable and less able trans people - am I the only one who finds this really quite condescending towards trans people as a group? I don't think sticker charts and love bombing is going to help much.

The cry of 'take care of me/us and take a higher share of responsibility because you're a woman' is not a healthy request when it comes from any adult, partners included, and not healthy for women to feel compelled to do.

JB has ovaries of steel

Watching this video has made me feel so happy and grateful that there's someone like Julie Bindel standing up for women. She's so brave. I just know that she'll NEVER let these bully boys silence her.

Ekphrasis · 22/04/2018 17:00

Gosh so lots of documentary makers at the meeting.

Ekphrasis · 22/04/2018 16:59

Thanks for that link Housemouse, I will watch later.

Cat, I wonder if you could contact WPUK and ask if there's anyway you could find an escort or be allowed to get into the venue earlier?

catandtheteapot · 22/04/2018 16:56

I don’t have friends to go with and don’t know anyone. I’ll just wait until nearer the time then see if a group wants to meet up prior to going to the meeting place.

Ekphrasis · 22/04/2018 16:51

i have a ticket for the meeting in Newcastle in May. I’m disabled and concerned about the violence. I’m still going though.

I was thinking about going but will have a new born. I'm not sure I'll be awake though the violence might put me off with baby (bf) Unfortunately I don't know anyone else going.

catandtheteapot · 22/04/2018 16:49

I’m not on Twitter. I’m going on my own yes.

80sQueen · 22/04/2018 16:48

That’s disgraceful Shock

Weebo · 22/04/2018 16:33

Are you going on your own Cat?

I'm sure there will be some other people attending who will be happy to go in with you if TRA's are kicking off and you are by yourself.

Maybe send a Tweet out closer to the time?

LangCleg · 22/04/2018 15:36

It's against the law to prevent someone's movement, isn't it?

Unsure. But the police powers usually invoked at demos would be obstruction of the highway or trespass. Since these people were not blocking a public thoroughfare, obstruction wouldn't count. And for trespass, the Jam Jar would have to request the police to act - highly unlikely given this venue. Same reason for not buckling to TRA calls for cancellation would lead them to allow the TRAs to protest (unless things got actually violent and out of control, presumably).

ArcheryAnnie · 22/04/2018 15:23

Bloody hell. JB has ovaries of steel.

I don't understand why the police allowed a group who had nothing to to with that meeting to enter the building or remain in the building, when they were preventing the normal business of the building to happen.

hipsterfun · 22/04/2018 15:19

If somebody blocks your way, and you inform them of your intent to continue, then continue only to be physically blocked, what’s the legal situation?

HouseMouseQueen · 22/04/2018 15:08

I just saw two of the videos this morning.

Like other posters, I was just hoping Julie would bring out some working class whoop ass and just push past these men.

I watched the event on Youtube and throughout the first hour you can hear the TA's screaming outside. NARC RAGE.

AAK "For those who tolerated or even encouraged it when it was aimed at people they didn't like, well, you're part of the reason we're where we are now."

Yes, that video of the Bristol meeting has hardened my resolve and lowered my tolerance for people like Marvin, who seem to think it will all be sorted out if we just behave ourselves. Fuck that.

Noone is going to stop me entering a legal public meeting. I am aghast at what happened. These cunts have scored a serious own goal if they think they can intimidate women and stop them speaking. No fucking way.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/04/2018 14:35

Antifa wanted it to be the current definition right from the beginning. I guess they got their way. I don't think they should have.

I feel like once the self-id issue has been dealt with we're long overdue for a discussion about antifa's influence on the left as a whole and whether it's been a positive one (from my perspective it has not).

hipsterfun · 22/04/2018 14:35

Does anyone know when no-platforming started? I don’t remember it in the 90s/early 00s.

I assume, quite possibly erroneously, that it’s an American thing.

NotTerfNorCis · 22/04/2018 14:29

The logic behind no-platforming used to be that 'we' (e.g. the students at some university) refuse to give a platform to particular speakers, even if a minority welcomes them. Now, no-platforming means denying a platform to those speakers anywhere - not just at the uni. TRAs want to stop feminists talking on Twitter, Mumsnet, and in physical venues too. It's become a blanket ban. And that is scary.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/04/2018 14:23

And honestly, if people are regularly behaving this way at other sorts of demos that is also a problem. I have a friend who supports no-platforming. I thought it was a bad idea when it was just for fascists, and was not at all surprised to see it spread and be aimed at anyone who studenty types don't like, because the thing about something like that is that once you legitimize it then it can be used against you too.

Masks, blocking access to meeting venues - this is not the way activists should be operating in a democratic society. For those who tolerated or even encouraged it when it was aimed at people they didn't like, well, you're part of the reason we're where we are now.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/04/2018 14:19

Cosigning everything Mistress said!

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 22/04/2018 14:05

Well said Mistress

MsMcWoodle · 22/04/2018 14:04

Yup. Anyone who is in doubt about what happened here, go back and watch the vids again.
Mealy-mouthed excuses and attempts to obscure don't work.
