Josh Connor is like an angry, politicised Nathan Barley, yeah.

SunsetBeetch · 24/04/2018 11:36

Im still struggling to figure this out. The stupid fucking giggling. Has anything happened since?

Wanderabout · 23/04/2018 15:57

Great post Ketzele

EnglandKeepMyBones · 23/04/2018 15:53

@catandtheteapot I'm buying my ticket for Newcastle tomorrow. I'm happy to meet up beforehand as part of a group if something can be organised.

SunsetBeetch · 23/04/2018 13:55

Great post @ketzele

MadBadDaddy · 23/04/2018 13:45

@Ekphrasis Noted, thanks.

Ketzele · 23/04/2018 12:40

I should just clarify that when I say 'real' trans people, I don't mean 'people who have really changed sex'. I'm distinguishing between thuggish bandwaggoners who are doing this till Daddy gets them a job as a management consultant, and those who genuinely and permanently as trans.

Ketzele · 23/04/2018 12:37

hipsterfun, one of the advantages of being very aged is that you do get to see how these things come and go. I have always been a radical feminist, but there have been times when I've kept away from feminist activism because of all the nuttiness and negativity and bullying and policing each other. Ditto left activism. And lesbian and gay activism too. One of my best times as a lesbian activist, paradoxically, was Clause 28, perhaps because it was a battle against a very real danger, and forced us to be united and reasonable people to stand up for us.

So I do think this too shall pass. The students will move on. Activists will find another way of playing top dog. The question is how much damage will it leave in its wake, and who will pay the price for that. I'm inclined to say that children and young people will be the main victims, and then all the decent and real trans people who have a very real cause to fight and are seeing it trashed. Feminism will survive and we may even get stronger. I think the biggest reason for asking each other not to be gratuitously unpleasant, and that when they go low we should go high, is that when all this reaches its messy end there is an alliance to be forged between feminists and trans people. It would be a shame if that couldn't happen because our anger with a minority of vile posh boys forced a more permanent alienation.

Ekphrasis · 23/04/2018 08:14

I'm not saying you have to have the same opinions but it helps to reply in similar ways that keep debate moving forward.

Ekphrasis · 23/04/2018 08:12

madbad an extremely good way to go about joining in debates here is to do what actually the majority of confident regular posters have done, before they started posting.

Spend a loooong time lurking and reading. Notice posting styles (I have learnt a lot from many, particularly Datun) and language.

Many here were on mn first for the conceptionand parenting boards, or the notorious AIBU car parking threads or relationships or special needs. It took time for things in this area to filter through and at first many lurk and learn, as a few questions.

You do tend get your arse handed to you on a plate at some point on mn.

MadBadDaddy · 23/04/2018 03:06

@thebewilderness ...and to answer your question, yes I do.

MadBadDaddy · 23/04/2018 02:58

@thebewilderness if posts are directed at me, would it be better if I ignored them? I'm not looking for a spotlight. Apart from responding I probably do really have the one thing to say.

thebewilderness · 23/04/2018 02:43

MadBadDadd
Do you ever talk about anything but yourself?

MadBadDaddy · 23/04/2018 02:31

@OvaHere NATALT is why I signed up here, and you're free to think whatever you like about that. I take your point about derailing and I'll keep that in mind and keep it brief. But whenever my lot upsets your lot, I can't be totally silent: That's not me hurting women and then telling the world it's for my benefit. Their violence is inexcusable. I don't know where else to say this without getting silenced. I didn't come here to win or negotiate anything. Thick skin deployed.

The thought that i might also be part of some screengrab on Twitter, and am now quite possibly a suspected transphobe, makes me feel more like sticking around, not less.

hipsterfun · 23/04/2018 01:21

Good to know this retribution for non-PCness has such a long history Confused Nice Bindel anecdote though!

I’d guess I’m 10-15 years behind you, Ketzele. The activism of the 90s seems like it was a bit more fun, maybe because your generation had made decent headway with social issues and we didn’t have Maggie looming over us Grin

Trumpdump · 23/04/2018 00:56

The YouTube video has been deleted Sad

Ketzele · 22/04/2018 23:50

A quick Julie Bindel anecdote: back in the 80s, when she and I were both baby lesbians living up north, I knew her vaguely (she was v cute with long curly hair). At some feminist conference, a couple of women tried to beat up my girlfriend for some heinous act of political non-correctness, and when we came back next day they said if we came in they'd batter us. The organisers refused to help in any way. The only person who took a stand was Julie, who came and sat with us on the stairs outside and was very friendly.

I don't always agree with her by any means, but IME she has a good heart and is also funny and brave.

Ketzele · 22/04/2018 23:44

hipsterfun, no platforming was definitely a thing when I was a student in the early 80s. We were mainly no platforming the National Front and the racist Monday Club (chaired by John Bercow, who has had quite the Damascene conversion since then).

As an oldie, I'm very interested in how young activists understand recent history. I've read so many TRAs talking about how the lesbian and gay rights movement was carried by trans activists, which is complete nonsense. I knew and liked a lot of trans people as they often shared social space with us, but most thought of L&G rights and trans rights as being two separate struggles. What does get erased is how important lesbians were to both feminism and gay rights.

CisMyArse · 22/04/2018 23:16

I've had to step away from Twitter and MN recently to an extent as peaking constantly is mentally exhausting.

The footage is...embarrassing for them. I cringed all the way through it.

Did JB get in eventually?
I was expecting some nonsense in Cardiff the week before last but it was quiet thankfully.

I'm really hoping that WPUK can step up a gear. We need bigger meetings and louder voices. So so sick of this shit.

thebewilderness · 22/04/2018 22:27

It was explained on the FB page. They have minions to keep them safe from women with opinions.
This is not the first time transgender males took over an organization to use it to the opposite purpose from the one it was created to serve. It is kinda who they are and what they do.

Voice0fReason · 22/04/2018 22:27

This has really incentivised me to get to a WPUK meeting. I'm disabled so it's not an easy task but it's so important. I will have to wait until there is one closer to me.
I will not be intimidated by a bunch of men in masks. I'll wear a go-pro to record getting in. People need to know that it is NOT the women attending these events who are being violent or aggressive. We are not trying to eradicate transpeople. Trans women are trying to eradicate female only spaces.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 22/04/2018 22:07

bewild
"The trans identified males of Sisters Uncut explained this morning that that is why they never go to these terrorist actions themselves and always send their minions instead. Being exposed to police and women saying no to them endangers their mental health.
I confess to being a bit shocked that they do not even carry their own water, but I guess that is what they think women are for."

Where is this from? I am blinking madly

thebewilderness · 22/04/2018 21:42

If all else fails you could read the talk guidelines provided for you by MN.
