LGBT+LD @ lgbtlb
Public statement by the LGBT+ Liberal Democrats executive regarding the resignation of our honorary president, Lord Paddick:
1/4
The LGBT+ Liberal Democrats executive has reluctantly accepted the resignation of Lord Paddick as our honorary president.
2/4
Lord Paddick previously tended his resignation, which we declined when he made certain undertakings about his meeting with a group set up to oppose transgender equality legislation.
3/4
We regret that those undertakings have not been honoured. Subsequently Lord Paddick tended his resignation again, which has been accepted.
4/4

Lord Paddick has form for resigning

Lord Paddick quits as Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokespeson following furore over leader Tim Farron's views on gay sex
The former Lib Dem London Mayoral candidate said the decision had been made 'weeks ago.'

He quit as LD home affairs spokesperson as he was uncomfortable with Tim Farron's views on gay marriage. The resignation prompted Farron's ultimately. He is an important and influential figure in the party.

I'm not quite sure what's going on here or why. It sounds like the LGBT LD didn't want him to resign. It sounds like its connected to trans issues and Paddick's position. The timing is interesting.

I don't want to read too much into this. But its suggesting a split in opinion and approach. (I don't believe this shows that Paddick is pro-women's rights. I suspect he is more pro-due process, at least at this stage). And that its damaging to the executive as a whole.

When is the meeting with Paddick scheduled for? It could be very interesting now. Looks like Paddick really is sticking his neck out.

Not surprising. He says he’s seeing hate from both sides. It must be a real eye opener for anyone who has previously accepted the rhetoric that trans people are always victims.

c75kp0r · 26/04/2018 07:24

He's tweeted to say he's had enough. Can't say I blame him.

Anlaf · 26/04/2018 07:09

Brian P has had many furious responses to his tweet supporting a woman's place, with members of the lgbt+ Lib Dems telling him he's wrong

Too many threads to link to one- but you can see his replies here mobile.twitter.com/brianpaddick/with_replies

Brian's doing himself and lib dems great credit in arguing back, reasonably, and defending both AWP and people's right to assemble

Waddlelikeapenguin · 25/04/2018 22:19

Listening doesn’t hurt or corrupt.
Brilliant (& is it just me seeing a snark at the LGBT LD with the "corrupt")

loudaloneknows · 25/04/2018 20:20

How reassuring. Am following him now on twitter. I wasn't happy with his role in Tim Farron's resignation but this is good.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/04/2018 19:14

Listening doesn’t hurt or corrupt.

Absolutely. Whereas #nodebate does.

ChattyLion · 25/04/2018 19:11

Great. Well done Women’s Place UK. It will be really progress to have people (like Brian Paddick) in the House of Lords who get the issues.

LizzieSiddal · 25/04/2018 13:24

Thank goodness for that!

This is why debate us so important.

R0wantrees · 25/04/2018 13:16

not just a politician's opinion given Brian Paddick used to be the deputy assistant commissioner in the Met. police.

Melamin · 25/04/2018 13:08

That is good news. I am another politician is encouraging respectful debate.

More politicians need to do this, instead of retweeting misleading stuff coming from from data breaches Wink

Wanderabout · 25/04/2018 13:01

Thank goodness for another politician speaking up for democratic debate. Ridiculous that this had become such a controversial stance.

Big respect for Brian Paddick for standing up for this.

Whatever his views, the point is he is reaching them by listening to opposing views from both sides and encouraging respectful debate.

RedToothBrush · 25/04/2018 12:37

In response to the Oxford University statement on their meeting today womans place have tweeted this:

WomansPlaceUk @ womansplaceuk
You will hear a lot of things about us. Some of them are truly terrible. The good news they are simply not true. We are a campaign dedicated to ensuring women's voices are heard and their rights are upheld in any changes to the law.

Its just had a response from Brian Paddick:

Brian Paddick @ brianpaddick
I’ve only met two representatives from @WomansPlaceUK in a meeting that included 3 trans women & an academic. Nothing said in that meeting made me think they were anti trans rights. Participants didn’t agree on everything but it was cordial. Listening doesn’t hurt or corrupt.

This is real progress to have Paddick to say this and support the existence and right of Women's Place even though this is clearly not an endorsement of its views.

Pleased at this.

There was one woman recently convicted of rape as a joint enterprise, but yes it's very rare.

English & Welsh rape law talks about 'his penis', but there is also a clause in the GRA stating transsexual people can still be prosecuted for gendered crime.

Scottish law is different in that it refers to 'Person A's penis', where a penis can be also surgically created.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/04/2018 20:25

I do recall seeing a news item within the last year or so about a woman convicted of rape by joint enterprise.

Eight in one year though?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 22/04/2018 20:14

It's not bacterial vaginosis though. It's thrush I wish I didn't know that but I do...

Don't see how it could be anyway tbh for reasons which might be a bit tautological to go into.

Ereshkigal · 22/04/2018 20:10

Rape as joint enterprise seems quite rare though. Surely there will be news reports with photos somewhere?

Albadross · 22/04/2018 18:45

I saw some decent responses from Brian today, he acknowledged that what happened in Bristol was unacceptable but is still clearly trying not to engage with either side.

R0wantrees · 22/04/2018 18:19

A woman can be convicted of rape if she assists a man in committing a rape.

I understood this was not the case in England & Wales but that Scottish law was slightly different.

OldCrone · 22/04/2018 18:13

Given that rape in the UK requires penetration with a penis how could they not be?
A woman can be convicted of rape if she assists a man in committing a rape.

WidowWadman · 22/04/2018 18:10

Bacterial vaginosis is not thrush, but a bacterial infection, so needs antibiotics, which you can't get OTC, but actually need a prescription for.

Eclairtooth · 22/04/2018 18:07

For difficult to treat cases I mean, otherwise just self treat as certain says.

Eclairtooth · 22/04/2018 18:05

You dont go to a gynaecologist for thrush, you go to the sexual health clinic surely?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 22/04/2018 17:53

The talk about the yeast infection/bacterial vaginosis is..erm...enlightening. AFAIK thrush isn't especially fussed as to sex, it just likes somewhere moist and warm and you don't need to see a gynae - or even a doctor - for thrush but knock yourself out pretending this is laydee stuff.

DarthArts · 22/04/2018 13:15

I looked at the thread given the latest updates.

Golly - I said a hot mess in an earlier post but it's starting to look like a parody account.

R0wantrees · 22/04/2018 10:40

@RedToothBrush

Absolutely agree... the LibDem LGBT twitter account have already commented that they are speaking up knowing they will get a barrage of hatred....
