Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is feminism inherently sexist? Anybody for human rights anymore?

Feminism appears to only ever advocate for women's rights alone, even when we mention gender equality it is immediately presumed that it's an issue where women are in need of support and empowerment.
Is that not inherently sexist, solely focusing on the rights of only a subset of our species, why are we not advocating for human rights anymore?
There are at least 6 separate organisations where I work that advocate for gender equality and/or diversity and/or women's rights, and every one of them is focused on women's rights. Where I work females out perform and out number men, I don't understand how I'm suppose to be at an advantage because I'm a man, and there's not a single group I can go to for support as none of those groups are willing to offer me any of their services.
I'm all for human rights and consider myself an individualist where people should be awarded things on merit, but even when trying to pose questions in what should be a critical thinking environment I get branded a sexist and a misogynist. Without anyone acknowledging and critiquing my ideas, I'm personally attacked and disregarded, is that because I'm a man?

So wait, does Ophelia drink it because she likes the taste? I like a lot of herbal teas (don't kill me!) but the one that I just can't make myself drink no matter how good for me it's meant to be is nettle. Just the smell makes me want to run away.

MrsUnderwood · 20/04/2018 08:59

@0phelia every day’s a school day on Mumsnet. If I saw you drinking fennel tea I would think you had a bit of constipation, or a stomach ache, as that’s what we use it for. But I like cooking up potions and herbal remedies so that’s just me.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/04/2018 08:47

Has he gotten to the Titanic yet?

Xenophile · 20/04/2018 08:25

Bollocks!

Crossing out fail. Stupid fat phone fingers.

Xenophile · 20/04/2018 08:22

Oh, this thread is a joy!

Even the somewhat ridiculous “I watched The Red Pill and it changed my life” person is a welcome change. —despite her belief that we’re all far too stupid to have listened to MRA arguments about why men should be allowed to rape women with impunity—

I quite liked the belief that women in areas where men go to shoot at each other are somehow protected by those men. I’m sure all those women raped and murdered by those lovely protective men throughout history feel loads better.

Anyway, I have to go and fettle my poor DS. I’ll let him know how sad OP is that he has such an awful human for a mother. I’m sure he’ll laugh like a drain.

ShamelesslyPlacemarking · 20/04/2018 08:19

Dod you know when the suffragettes were fighting for the vote a poll was done showing that 60% or so percent of women didn't want the vote. Why? Because if you had the vote you had to enlist in the army.

Fascinating. I’d love to read this poll from the turn of the century, the era I believe people refer to as the Glory Days of Accurate Market Research.

Out of interest, when they polled men about whether they’d like to be able to vote - as long as they enlisted - what were the results?

For anyone who hasn't read it, this blog is essential reading - by Jessica Eaton, comparing the responses she gets to the charity she and her husband set up to help men (only men) at risk of suicide, versus the responses she gets to her research into violence against women.

"I take your points that maybe I should start something up, and I might if I can find like minded individualist people, but it won't be to solely help men in adversity, as that would defeat the purpose of this post."

blinks

Did you really just say that you are not prepared to start a group to help men in adversity, because it would stop you whining on the internet that women haven't already done it?

Confused
Rufustheconstantreindeer · 20/04/2018 07:53

reluctant

Oh well thats good Grin

I was a bit worried then...really didnt think self flagellation would be your thing

Although you keep coming back to the feminist board so maybe it is Grin

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 20/04/2018 07:52

Oh, I forgot the link:

archive.org/details/roundaboutpoundw00reevrich

It's been digitised so you can read it on the computer - but I warn you, if you get started, you'll find a couple of hours have passed and you haven't done anything you should be doing!

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 20/04/2018 07:51

I remembered a book from another thread 'Round about a Pound a Week' - it's fascinating - a woman spoke to, and noted down everything about the lives of families on a road in Vauxhall.

I read the chapters around food, and, these men putting food on the table, made sure that most of it went in their own mouths (having been prepared and served and cleaned up after by their wives) - the money the women brought in went straight into the family pot, the money the men brought in often went into those mens stomachs in the form of booze and the lions share of the food.

It's not as bad as that now, but the attitudes still exist - penis portions, the man putting putting the roof over the family's head so he deserves more - just read the relationship board to see it - that's the patriarchy, that's why women still need liberating.

AngryAttackKittens · 20/04/2018 07:50

Can we not get the fun kind of troll for a change?

birdsdestiny · 20/04/2018 07:48

Oh I fell asleep and missed the rhino song. Work of genius. I can feel the ride turning. Those donkeys are on the run.

TheRagingGirl · 20/04/2018 07:41

I don't understand how I'm suppose to be at an advantage because I'm a man

Fish don’t realise they swim in water.

But seriously, are you a bit thick? Why can’t you read the very excellent books which women have written about the structures of patriarchy over the last 250 years.
You could start with Mary Wollstonecraft, A Vindication of the Rights of Women.

If you don’t trust what women say about their lives (it seems you don’t), then John Stuart Mill’s The Subjection of Women (he wrote it with his wife, Harriet Taylor, but we’ll pass over that).

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 20/04/2018 07:37

This is a bit like when people racists get up in arms about the MOBO awards.

Or having a good old XY-hine.

ReluctantCamper · 20/04/2018 07:33

oh, it all kicked off after i went to bed!

Rufustheconstantreindeer, re WI, to be fair, it was actually a really good meeting, had some fabulous Indian ladies teaching us Bollywood dancing, and then they let us all try on their saris.

It's just the business at the end which goes on a bit. I do enjoy it, I don't just attend through sheer masochism, honest.

And yeah, it's been a lovely change having an MRA plopper. I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

The 20 something who watched a documentary on the internet, the name of which she can't quite remember, that made her re-examine her whole world view was a bit depressing though.

0phelia · 20/04/2018 07:30

In our house Fennel tea is specifically for making shit rocket out your arse as a cure for constipation. I make my own special blend

I did not know that. Sometimes I drink it in front of other people, do they think it's because I'm constipated? Blush

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 20/04/2018 07:26

This is such a walk down memory lane, how lovely. I remember when this place was MRA's and Handmaidens as far as the eye could see

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 20/04/2018 07:22

I'm interested in this female dominated matriarchal microcosm you work in, @cforte0

I thought he meant that the support he wanted seemed to be entirely for women, and staffed by women - and rather than realise that's because men aren't stepping up and doing that work or providing those services, he (yes, you've guessed it), blamed the women.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 20/04/2018 07:12

I'm interested in this female dominated matriarchal microcosm you work in, @cforte0

Is it a typically low paid female-dominated industry, like care work, hospitality or retail? And you're angry because it's really shit do be stuck doing hard work for low pay.

Or is it a decent or well-paid industry that doesn't usually have lots of women, and you're annoyed because you think those women are getting ahead of you unfairly?

SophoclesTheFox · 20/04/2018 06:45

There is something achingly familiar about the sad puppy OP, surrounded by hateful harridans, then backed up by the honey badger who lost her feminism by watching the red pill movie, isn't there?

Welcome back, guys! A nice change from TRA ploppers Grin

Or is it just that I am getting old, and there is nothing new under the sun?

2rebecca · 20/04/2018 06:41

I'm not comfortable with the word "privilege" which to me signifies a virtue signaller and is a way of avoiding discussing the point and dismissing the other person.
I agree that men have had many crap jobs at times and won't have felt very privileged. Many not very bright working class boys are struggling in an increasingly automated world to find jobs.
However this is partly because they won't work in care homes or nursing because they see such jobs as feminine and they still earn more than us on average and many still try to dominate us and expect us to do housework and do stuff regarded as women's work for smooth family running unpaid.
Stopping poorly educated boys drifting is not what feminism is about. Back to rhinos and donkeys again.
As mothers we will support our sons and hopefully make them less sexist in their gender expectations

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 20/04/2018 06:33

Believe it or not men care about their mothers and sisters and daughters and didn't want them to die.

Didn't care about the other side's mothers and sisters and daughters though.

Throughout the centuries, the numbers of civilian and combatant casualties have remained about equal. It's no safer staying at home than it is going to war. Civilian_casualty

In dangerous jobs like mining, women have been actively driven out women_miners

This is of course forgetting that women also do dangerous jobs themselves, and that women have to put their lives at risk to propagate the species!

MrsUnderwood · 20/04/2018 06:32

@LightofaSilveryMoon schoolgirl error you made there. In our house Fennel tea is specifically for making shit rocket out your arse as a cure for constipation. I make my own special blend.

eurochick · 20/04/2018 05:38

If we don't need feminism in the UK any more because equality is sorted, could you explain the recent gender pay gap statistics to me? And while you're at it, have a bash at covering female victims of male violence?
