Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is feminism inherently sexist? Anybody for human rights anymore?

Feminism appears to only ever advocate for women's rights alone, even when we mention gender equality it is immediately presumed that it's an issue where women are in need of support and empowerment.
Is that not inherently sexist, solely focusing on the rights of only a subset of our species, why are we not advocating for human rights anymore?
There are at least 6 separate organisations where I work that advocate for gender equality and/or diversity and/or women's rights, and every one of them is focused on women's rights. Where I work females out perform and out number men, I don't understand how I'm suppose to be at an advantage because I'm a man, and there's not a single group I can go to for support as none of those groups are willing to offer me any of their services.
I'm all for human rights and consider myself an individualist where people should be awarded things on merit, but even when trying to pose questions in what should be a critical thinking environment I get branded a sexist and a misogynist. Without anyone acknowledging and critiquing my ideas, I'm personally attacked and disregarded, is that because I'm a man?

die in the work place

Also, prostitution is one of the most dangerous professions, and far more women than men are murdered in that 'line of work'.

PinkbicyclesinBerlin · 19/04/2018 23:33

I love these threads, they give me a chance to practice my ignoring skills.

birdsdestiny · 19/04/2018 23:32

Yes reluctant, I would like to hear about that too.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 19/04/2018 23:31

Men are more likely to commit suicide

Suicide attempts tend to be equal between men and women. Men are just more likely to succeed because they opt for more violent methods.

die in the work place

The fact that more men die in the work place has nothing to do with the fact they're men. Nobody is going around shoving men in the way of dangerous machinery or whacking them over the head whilst sparing the women who work there.

women are assumed to be the best carer for their children

Assumed by who?

LightofaSilveryMoon · 19/04/2018 23:31

@Antislut,
Have you ever read or studied history and social history, of anywhere in the world, ever?
If not, then I suggest that you do so, and then get back to me!

thiskitten · 19/04/2018 23:31

How have your rights been abused/ infringed? Have these gender equality organisations said they won't help you because you are a man? Or because your rights haven't actually been abused / it's not a gender equality issue?

Yes, please start your own organisation. Maybe if you set up your own gender equality organisation you will gain a better grasp on why so many gender equality organisations are focused on women.

Slightly worried by some of the responses here seen as this is for parents and many of you likely have sons, but if it's as you say, you're all providing them with lots of privilege so they should be fine

What a strange comment. How are feminists providing their sons with lots of privileges? You've criticised feminism for not advocating for men - yet in your next post you say we are providing our sons with lots of privileges (presumably because they are male?).

CelticSelkie · 19/04/2018 23:30

feminism would help suicidal men. A lot of men feel like failures because they're not earnig enough to 'provide', but they still want/expect a woman to do the bulk of the childcare and housework. IF they had a more egalitarian view on running a household then they wouldn't feel the weight of 'failure' because they aren't financially successful. So says ''Blindboy'' who spoke to a lot of depressed men in Co Limerick

OlennasWimple · 19/04/2018 23:30

I feel almost misty eyed at the good old-fashioned "what about the men" poster. It makes a nice change from the sort of stuff we've had recently

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 19/04/2018 23:28

reluctant

Why do you go to the WI if its tedious

Or was it that particular meeting

Antislut · 19/04/2018 23:28

So it doesn't matter as much that men kill themselves because women try to at the same rate? That's ridiculous.

Trousersdontmakemeaman · 19/04/2018 23:26

Have a chat with the millions of men in leadership positions, I am sure one of them will be on your side.

futuresupergran · 19/04/2018 23:25

men and women are both roughly equally likely to attempt suicide, but men die more from suicide because they use more violent methods

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 19/04/2018 23:25

Slightly worried by some of the responses here seen as this is for parents and many of you likely have sons, but if it's as you say, you're all providing them with lots of privilege so they should be fine.

I'm sure my son will be fine. Thanks for your concern though.

CelticSelkie · 19/04/2018 23:24

Don't worry about our sons.

They'll earn more than our daughters.

Antislut · 19/04/2018 23:24

Men are more likely to commit suicide, die in the work place and women are assumed to be the best carer for their children. Women don't have any less rights than men. Feminists have been clutching at straws in the western world for a long time and I say this as a former feminist.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 19/04/2018 23:22

@PosyFossilsShoes
Yes, this:
Feminism is a movement for the liberation of women and girls. It is not a generalist equal-opps let's be nice to each other group in which men's rights are promoted but women get to do the emotional, social and physical labour.

Oh, yes yes yes!

birdsdestiny · 19/04/2018 23:21

We feel a lot better now you have approved of some of our arguements.

futuresupergran · 19/04/2018 23:21

oh fuck off already you misogynist man

Trousersdontmakemeaman · 19/04/2018 23:20

I don't think I understand what you mean by gender.

Feminists are defined by sex not gender.

cforte0 · 19/04/2018 23:18

This was for the majority the response I expected, and in hind sight I probably should've emphasised the fact that the groups claim to be advocating gender equality but focus on women because they're run by feminists. They argue mainly from an equal outcome stand point as oppose to an equal opportunities one. Either way women dominate this particular workforce, so it was interesting that all of you seemed to neglect this information.
I take your points that maybe I should start something up, and I might if I can find like minded individualist people, but it won't be to solely help men in adversity, as that would defeat the purpose of this post. If it was for solely men, it would probably just be labeled a "privileged" group like some of you here have already labelled me without even knowing any details about me other than that I have a Y chromosome.

Slightly worried by some of the responses here seen as this is for parents and many of you likely have sons, but if it's as you say, you're all providing them with lots of privilege so they should be fine.

PS: I liked the point about the donkey and rhino sanctuary, it's nice to see some logical arguments.

I don't think cforte0 is coming back. Shame, I enjoyed winding down from my fucking tedious WI meeting by being thoroughly rude to a dufus on the internet.

BertrandRussell · 19/04/2018 23:02

There are organzationa that advocate for men-CALM for example. What do you want me to do to help? I have some free time every week-call on me.

AskBasil · 19/04/2018 23:00

why are we not advocating for human rights anymore?

Um, are you aware that women are human too? Women's rights are human rights.

What rights do you feel you don't have purely and simply because you are a man?

PosyFossilsShoes · 19/04/2018 22:58

Feminism appears to only ever advocate for women's rights alone

Astonishingly, yes.

why are we not advocating for human rights anymore?

Who's "we"? I do. It's what I specialise in. I'm also a feminist activist; the two are not mutually exclusive.

there's not a single group I can go to for support as none of those groups are willing to offer me any of their services.

Do what women did then, and set one up. Women's support groups, networks, refuges, CR groups, even book clubs, didn't just materialise, they were set up by women who wanted to see them exist. You want to see a men's group exist? Set it up.

I'm all for human rights and consider myself an individualist where people should be awarded things on merit, but

You know when people say "I"m not a racist, but" or "I'm all for free speech, but" or "I'm not being offensive, but" and you know that hte "but" means that they're about to say the opposite of the claimed trait?

even when trying to pose questions in what should be a critical thinking environment I get branded a sexist and a misogynist.

Ah.

Without anyone acknowledging and critiquing my ideas, I'm personally attacked and disregarded, is that because I'm a man?

No dude. It's because of this:

Feminism is a movement for the liberation of women and girls. It is not a generalist equal-opps let's be nice to each other group in which men's rights are promoted but women get to do the emotional, social and physical labour.

Your post suggests you haven't quite understood the distinction and THAT is why people are calling you a sexist and a misogynist without offering you the "critique" you think your ideas should attract.

NotTerfNorCis · 19/04/2018 22:58

I just got some shocking news.

For many years I'd been avoiding my local shop because the man who ran it was 'inappropriate'. It didn't occur to me to do anything about it - what could I do?

Then tonight I heard he'd been arrested after TWENTY-NINE women complained about him for sexual harassment. I think some real nasty stories are going to emerge.

For every one of those 29 there were probably dozens who didn't go to the police - like me.

Is there an equivalent for men? Hundreds of men avoiding their local shop because of harassment by the female owner?

Of course there isn't. This is why feminism still exists.
