MN no longer safe for gender critical women

I am reluctantly deleting my MN account, in light of the data breach: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3225517-The-MNHQ-Moderation-team

It's a fantastic site, Justine has shown herself to be a staunch defender of women and I'm enormously grateful to MNetters for all your support and humour over the years. So this isn't a flounce, more a reluctant slink out of the door of a party while the gin is still flowing but...

..this data breach could cost me my job and my personal safety. I have no way of knowing whether Emma has stolen my data and MN don't seem interested in finding out. They are not even reporting the breach to the ICO.

I hate doing this. I hate that trans extremists will see this as a victory. But I cannot trust MN to keep my data safe, or even to take proper steps to remedy a breach. I sincerely hope that they will review their approach, so I can come back. Until they do, the anonymity of usernames means nothing and every gender critical woman on here is at risk.

So long and thanks for all the Pom bears Bear Sad

I'd like to point out something I noticed to anyone who may have missed it. This is one of the reasons I love MN...

I'll point out the opposite first: The TRAs are online gleeful and promising all sorts of evils deeds on the MN posters, and thrilled that they may have acquired personal details in order to do this. Absolutely no thought to any vulnerable women and children.

Here's what cheers me: One of the posters who was exposed was pro-TRA. And the women of MN are worried about her being threatened or harmed in anyway.

Massive difference between the two groups right there, and I know which I admire.

MargeH · 19/04/2018 09:45

Sorry, but I'm not buying into 'the poor thing, she was manipulated' excuses.

Here she is, telling the world how her personal details were posted online....and then posts an image with them just in case we missed them first time round.

thetab.com/uk/leeds/2016/02/04/roosh-vs-followers-posted-details-online-i-criticised-22209

Maybe she sees it a badge of honour.....y'know, being a right-on journalist 'n all that.

Igneococcus · 19/04/2018 09:32

I'm staying.
I'm a biologist, I'm employed by my company because I am a biologist which I will point out to them should this ever come up. They can't (and they wouldn't because they don't either) expect me to believe that humans aren't a dimorphic species.

Yarnswift · 19/04/2018 09:27

She is accountable. She’s shown that she has poor critical thinking, poor impulse control and cannot be trusted with data. I wouldnt hire anyone who demonstrated those traits and if she’d done what she has done in my industry she would be pursued to the full extent of the law.
It was not a one off action, she seems to imply she’d been collecting data for a while.
She will likely never work in digital content again. She may face criminal charges. She probably wrecked her future career path.
I’m afraid I dont feel sorry for her at all. I feel sorry for the women who are now worried abusive exes may find them, or who may lose their jobs from being found to have gender critical views.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 19/04/2018 09:21

Oh come on Miss, she isn't stupid by any stretch of the imagination.

Certainly devoid of any critical thinking skills though. What is it with Universities these days? Logic was one of the first classes I did.

But she's a big girl and she made her own decisions to call women 'transphobic' scum and take action on them.

Accountability is required

missbonita · 19/04/2018 09:07

Just one of the things that saddens me about this is that a foolish young woman, who has been utterly manipulated, has now lost her career. For what? To impress a bunch of aggressive people who don't give a shit about her.

Yarnswift · 19/04/2018 09:00

Gosh don’t apologise, I think you’re all extremely brave!

That’s what makes me so mad about this breach - there are women whose children could be put at risk, who have abusive spouses trying to find them. Who have posted about intimate issues like health or addiction or any number of things.

I hope MNHQ get proper advice on how to deal with this and they absolutely do need to report to the ICO. It is a criminal matter of some gravity - it’s more severe than ‘just’ leaking identities of financial loss because the data has the potential to cause physical harm - it falls under a different category. They also need advice on how to comply with ‘minimum amount need’ data collection and visibility so that no one who doesn’t need it gets access to personal data.

It’s a real can of worms. The intern who leaked this will have damaged their entire future career- I work with clinical and patient data and if I’d stolen data like this I would literally never work in the field again - it’s a gross breach of trust. They could also (and I think should also) face criminal charges because of the nature of the information accessed and the potential for harm to women and children. I doubt she fully realised what she did but it’s going to have a serious impact on her life. A very foolish thing to do.

busyboysmum · 19/04/2018 08:53

I have no worries about being outed btw. All my friends and family know my views and everyone at the law firm I work at are firm believers in biology and reality. If anyone tried to attack me in any way I'd have the full force of the law behind me. The senior partner especially is ruthless in court.

PerfPower · 19/04/2018 08:52

Sorry, I was being all brave thinking about risks such as losing work by businesses and professional reputations being targeted etc. Totally different situation for anyone risking their anonymity and personal safety, I didn't mean to minimise that, sorry Flowers.

Yarnswift · 19/04/2018 08:36

I’ve deregged and re regged - I have a good reason (family member who cannot know where I live) and I’m pretty sure MNHQ had enough info to put that together if a full user data breach occurred. I can’t take the risk of this person finding me. My previous posts still stand.

PerfPower · 19/04/2018 08:29

I work in a university, we have a very strong trans inclusive policy and a very 'woke' culture. I was worried and angry to find myself on LM's 'terf list' (I clicked the link on here and was astonished to find my full name on it, despite never tweeting LM). I'd almost forgotten about it when I was in my boss' office last week to collect something and she looked up from her computer and said "I'm on that odious little prat's list too, we're in good company - there are some great women on that list".

I was amazed, she was incredibly 'woke' herself a year ago and voted for a transwoman to hold a woman's position on campus (TW went nuclear when they didn't get the position, so that could have been the start of her change of heart). Anyway, my fear of being 'outed' ended up being unfounded, more and more people are seeing this for what it is.

Also, just as an aside - every time I go into town I put leaflets in the women's changing areas, just outlining the stark reality of the consequences of self id with details of Amy's petition. I've only been questioned once, and when I explained it she said "Oh my God, you go ahead". Things are changing.

GenderApostate · 19/04/2018 08:15

I’ve started using proton mail, it’s secure and absolutely anonymous. Tunnel bear is a good vpn.
I fully support those of you who can’t risk being outed, I have nothing to lose and dgaf but am still wary due to DD being a teacher.

CarpetMothsFuckOff · 19/04/2018 08:12

Some people signed up 10 years ago when there wasn't this huge risk of data breaches

Yes, like me. When it became clear this wasn't sensible I changed my login details. It's not hard really.

QuentinSummers · 19/04/2018 08:05

rufus don't leave!!! Please?

I had to dereg and get all my posts pulled off a previous account after a TRA screenshot me and posted on Twitter. I was worried about being identifiable from my posting history.

I'm more careful about what i post now.

Springnowplease · 19/04/2018 07:59

I'm not going anywhere but I would like to de reg and register under a different email address. Would they count that as socking?

cloudtree · 19/04/2018 07:57

As much as I appreciate the stance MN takes on the feminism boards, they really must report this breach to the commissioner.

MargeH · 19/04/2018 07:53

Maybe MN needs to be more savvy in its recruitment process? EH is easily found online and claims she is a 'LGBT activist'. I'm not sure self-confessed activists - of any persuasion - are a wise bet when it comes to working on a forum such as this.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 19/04/2018 07:51

And thank you very much bewilderness Thanks

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 19/04/2018 07:50

Agree with susans last post

SusanBunch · 19/04/2018 07:43

Pretty daft of anyone to use their real name and email address to be honest.

Some people signed up 10 years ago when there wasn't this huge risk of data breaches. I don't think it's daft- MN make a fortune out of presenting themselves as this friendly and safe platform. If they are dumb enough to not have proper procedures in place to avoid this sort of thing happening, the blame lies at their feet, not the users.

SporadicSpartacus · 19/04/2018 07:37

Maybe so. I did because I am (was) happy for the moderators to know who I was. It adds a layer of accountability. While I don’t want to go full public gendercrit because of work implications, I stand by everything I’ve posted.

That was on the understanding that the data wouldn’t be stolen and splashed over the Internet, though. I will be smarter and less trusting in future.

CarpetMothsFuckOff · 19/04/2018 07:31

Pretty daft of anyone to use their real name and email address to be honest.

SporadicSpartacus · 19/04/2018 07:25

Sorry to see you go.

I am going to stick around, although likely under a new account with no identifying details, and via a VPN.

I imagine my work wouldn’t insta-sack me for having gender critical views - but it probably would broadly fall under attracting negative attention to the company, regardless of whether the views themselves are right or wrong.

:( , in short. I’ve talked about my disability, my marriage, bad former relationships, my job under this username. If it gets linked to my real name (which is part of the email address I provided on signup, as I believe in personal accountability), there is a very real possibility of real life rebound.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 19/04/2018 07:24

I'm staying too. I refuse to be scared off by the TRAs.
