Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Feminist playgroup mention of TERFs...

A trial feminist playgroup to discuss feminist, equality and gender norms has been set up where I live and I was/am really excited about the prospect of discussing all of these issues with like minded people and not have to shut down that part of me now I’m a parent.

It was really interesting but the noticed at the end on one of the discussion boards someone had commented about TERFs being an issue and dithering about how to approach it.

I am really fine in that specific space to agree to disagree but I find the term TERF really offensive and don’t want it to be acceptable use in the group if i continue - not sure how/it to challenge if it comes up or to maybe contact the organiser to discuss?

In the rest of my life I run a women’s charity and have fairly strong views about the necessity of women only spaces and have been worn down by the continuing pressure to justify these spaces and losing out on funding due to not offering men’s services so I don’t think I’m capable of shutting up completely and I also don’t want my daughter to think it’s an ok term.

Any thoughts or advice are very welcome

Just had a look at Etsy. In the Get the L out of LGBT badge, the L stands for lout. Not obvious, granted, but the other badges from that seller includes Woman not Cis.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/04/2018 20:08

I reported “Terf stomper” badges, with a pic of a DM boot on, to Etsy ages ago, they didn’t remove them.

Wanderabout · 26/04/2018 20:01

I reported the fuck terfs merchandise before. It was also covered in the Spectator. Etsy would do well do remove them as people are starting to realise what it means and the link to incitement to violence.

Wow that’s appalling but a good example to raise - it’s not on again till 14/5 but thank you for the advice and ideas

A friend was browsing Etsy today and found badges with the logo Fuck terfs for sale and also with the logo Get the L out of LGBT . I don’t know who the seller is. She has reported it to Etsy as being in breach of their equality etc policies. So you could raise this as an example and innocently ask what people think.

I tried listening to the Riley clip. Lordy how that person does go on. I actually stopped be8ng able to listen at all. It just became annoying white noise with the word “genitals” repeated at regular intervals. Sort of rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb (whiney voice ) rhubarb GENITALS rhubarb .
I think I need a little lie down and then some Magdalen Berns.

I know it's really hard to speak up on these issues, but when we do we give other women permissions to do so too.

You can publicly object in the most kitten-soft way:

"Hi guys, I am totally on board with being inclusive of everyone and on that I'd just like to point out that "TERF" is a slur which is used against women for having an opinion that other people don't like, just like 'bitch' or 'c*nt'. We don't have to agree with other peoples opinions but if we are going to be using sexist slurs I can't be a part of this group."

and if they object just direct them to terfisaslur.com and make your exit.

Sorry was on holiday and not had a chance to reply- like the reverse idea but not sure I could carry it off while chasing a toddler- need to think about my responses and staying calm having just stepped away from a conversation on Facebook about sex segregated spaces on mh wards and saying I thought v sensitively that All needs have to be respected and valued to be told I can say a trans woman is the opposite sex to a woman so treading carefully...

Smart one liners welcome - our daughters don’t deserve to grow up learning even more ways to ignore their needs

@doricgirl I've sent you a pm

They’ve been given a name, a name that means they’re bad people, people who should not speak and should not be heard. That name is “Terf,” which once meant “Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist” but now appears to stand in its own right as a term of abuse and dismissal alongside the other short, harsh words often used to question the worth and virtue of women.

If it can be argued by many an activist that the meaning of words change (and there is no denying they evolve over time but not at the rapid rate they are suggesting the meaning of and established and grounded “woman” has changed) at the rate they suggest, then surely we can use the same argument back and say the meaning (of the new and not generally previously societally accepted) of TERF has changed from the original descriptor to a slur word.

TERF has far less grounding in our language, in our brains than “woman” so we can argue that we are at the forefront of deciding what defines it and they themselves have proved with their constant use of it that it has changed from a mere description to a slur.

If on one hand they say so readily that words and meanings change and apply it to “woman” then they must also accept that it is more than equally applicable to the far yes established word (and it’s used as a word so often, I see it as accepted as such) “TERF”.

Some excellent resources on here. I say join, and patiently explain you're fighting for women and girls. Who are disadvantaged because of their biology - and who are being banned from talking about their biology, their own reality, by people shouting terf.

The transwoman shouting 'terf, terf, terf' along with other obscenities, before she/he was pushed aside by a policeman, is in court tomorrow for punching a 60yr old woman.

Hardly something we want to aspire to.

DJLippy · 11/04/2018 23:02

Play them a bit of Rapey J Penis

ALittleBitOfButter · 11/04/2018 22:47

Are Terfs those people who think women weren't excluded from sport because of their feelings of femininity? They think segregated women's sport was created because of their bodies? So transmisogynistixclusionarycissexiselfish!

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 22:09

These people don't like terfs either - the blonde is Tanis Woolf.

Plus anyway women and girls have too many rights, time to give some of them.

ALittleBitOfButter · 11/04/2018 21:53

My autocorrect is trying to de terf me. It keeps putting transwomen as two words!

ALittleBitOfButter · 11/04/2018 21:52

Oh I've heard of terfs. They're the ones who say that statistically it's safer for a man to transition as the murder rate for trans women in the UK is so low. Also I think they say trans women are more likely to be murderers than be murdered.

We don't want any of those types round 'ere!

ALittleBitOfButter · 11/04/2018 21:49

Are Terfs those people who question statistics which cite high suicide rates of transgender children, and quote the Tavistock who said there's only been one suicide in the last ten years?

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 21:44

And Maria, 60, who was assaulted at Speakers Corner for talking about women rights. By a man. Tanis Woolf, about half her age.

Ereshkigal · 11/04/2018 21:41

Yes. Do that.

ALittleBitOfButter · 11/04/2018 21:41

Which is why aerating their objections to the fore is useful.

"Are terfs those people who criticised that trans activist who attacked Rose Byrne, because he happened to be a paedophile?"

Ereshkigal · 11/04/2018 21:39

You could have a lot of fun. "I've heard that these TERFs object to the term front hole because they say a vagina is a passage. That can't be right? People like this exist?"

Agree with this suggestion!

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 21:38

Red. There you are making perfect sense.

Ereshkigal · 11/04/2018 21:37

Presumably they can’t allow it any space because as soon as logic enters, the majority might see the truth.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It is shockingly aggressive how transactivists colonise female spaces.

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2018 21:34

Terf just means female that talks about biology. Thats it.

Nothing to do with trans issues.
