Has anyone else read this enlightening article by respected feminist Julian Vigo about how mothers are excluded from some strands of feminism? It’s quite shocking what she’s uncovered.

LangCleg that image came into my mind when I was thinking about this thread, too!

Nowadays what we get is either men claiming they are the most oppressed people and so should be serviced, rather than doing their fair share of work, or even the ones who acknowledge they are on an axis of privilege (rare) just pay it lip service while hogging the stages and leaving women to do the childcare anyway.

Oiorpata · 11/04/2018 19:46

Female only events are wonderful, and little girls deserve to enjoy that special ambiance too.

LangCleg · 11/04/2018 15:50

Anyway. Back on topic. Almost every daytime women's event I've ever been to has had a creche for children of both sexes for at least pre-schoolers.

And a nice picture of Stuart Hall knowing his place in women's organising!

"What have trans people to do with this? It's an organising issue for feminists. Irrelevant to trans identities."

Well indeed Lang.

But any and every woman's issue is a Trans issue now.

Don't you realise that? Grin

LangCleg · 11/04/2018 15:29

Rad-fems and transclusionary rad-fems are entirely different groups of people, and there seems to be some confusion on here where the dividing line is, and exactly who is corrupting rad-fem ideals.

Lord love you, crisp, but there's a phrase to do with eggs and grandmothers you might recall. This board is full of women who have been feministing for decades and are not in the least confused about it.

And, I'm entirely unsure why you are bringing trans identities into a thread about whether or not male children should be accommodated - and if so, to what age - at women-only radfem events. What have trans people to do with this? It's an organising issue for feminists. Irrelevant to trans identities.

"Arguments which position male violence not as a social but as a “genetic condition” only serve to duplicate the very essentialist arguments which actual feminists are fighting today where correlating certain gendered behavior to sexed bodies is not the solution, it’s the problem." For actual you could insert radical here. Instead the writer has chosen to apply the label rad fem to the extremist randomers who happen to be opposing her on her social media thread.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/04/2018 15:03

The problem with the TRAs's jiggy dancing is that many, possibly even most, women (and men) concerned about the Trans ideology are not Rad Fem and many would not even have labelled themselves 'feminist' before the TRAs launched their batshittery.

So some feminists disagree and have fallen out.

Whoopee.

DietCoke87 · 11/04/2018 14:50

I support the right of women to organize their own events any way they want; female-only, adult-only, mother-only, lesbian-only...

Me too.

I think the title of the article (The Spawn: Feminism’s Misandry Problem) is more shocking than what was "uncovered".

An interesting response from an extremist*:
thewarriorfeminist.wordpress.com/2018/04/07/a-response-to-julian-vigos-the-spawn-feminisms-misandry-problem/

*Sorry if that's the wrong word. I'm not a radfem.

Also, the TRAs on Twitter jumping on this with screenshots from the Facebook thread are mistaken if they think everyone who has some questions about how proposed changes to legislation could impact on women's right is a radical feminist.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/04/2018 14:00

The feminist bashing agenda of crisp and TRAs is right there for everyone to see though.

chicklingpixies · 11/04/2018 13:59

Hahahaha mouth you’re right.
Let’s clarify it as: adult human males in female only spaces is obviously silly and WRONG, infant human males in female only spaces is the norm for good reason however women may disagree with each other.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 13:54

The male toddler in female only spaces argument is just silly though.

Well, we seem to be making it a legal requirement.

chicklingpixies · 11/04/2018 13:49

Crikey. I’m a mum of 3 boys and anyone who has ever wanted to pay attention to anything whilst simultaneously trying to keep the children quietly occupied with fun stuff knows that it’s IMPOSSIBLE. It’s either babes in arms at the event or crèche or babysitter. The male toddler in female only spaces argument is just silly though.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/04/2018 13:40

Not if you are a TRA though.

Dissent not permitted in cults

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 13:36

Men disagreeing in public. Jeez, when aren't they?

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/04/2018 13:31

Indeed Tallulah

The TRAs are squealing with glee.

Women expressing different ideas?

"Inconceivable"

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 11/04/2018 13:25

It's amazing isn't it. Some women disagree with each other in public = feminism is incoherent, feminists are hate-filled and women are nasty harpies.

Some men disagree with each other in public = ... just some men, having a disagreement.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 13:22

Crisp, we try and avoid derailing over here, it's a mumsnet thing, so we were talking about females meeting and in you pop with your agenda about men. Maybe start your own thread again?

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/04/2018 13:20

There are women on here who would define themselves as Rad Fem.

There are women on here who would not define themselves as RafdFem.

There are very few women in the world who would define themselves as 'TERFs' . That's a the TRA's job

TRAs will fall over themselves to sow division amongst women.

It's a fall out between some women. Big deal

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 13:18

I dunno Crisp, are you telling us women should all believe exactly the same thing?

Is that like Brexit, where everyone in the UK believes exactly the same thing?

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 13:16

Did you check out the figeres on the other threads, Sue0001 was posting different numbers t yours, perhaps you would have a look at Sue's and tell us which one is right?

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/04/2018 13:12

Crisp you are back with some boxes to shove us in. Do you work in IT?

crispbuttyfan · 11/04/2018 13:04

Of course, that's why I added my opinion to the discussion. I'm a radfem who has organized several women-only events and therefore I have had this discussion before.

While I'm here, I'll add that I found the posted article to be needlessly bombastic and self-centered. I had to compel myself to read past the opening salvo:

^I just received this as an email for a “feminist” event:

“It is a female-only space so we do not allow male children.”

My response: “You have just written the most fucked up email I have ever received in my life. Happy not to attend. Wow!!!”^

The most fucked up email the radical feminist author has ever received in her life is, “It is a female-only space so we do not allow male children.”?

This is longwinded Academicese for "bad feminists are just as bad as misogynistic men:

"We cannot create a movement for social reform and the advance of human rights of women based upon the reversal of atrocity or an 'eye for an eye' type of vigilante feminism."

One could almost forget she's talking about a single all-volunteer feminist event with a no boy-child boundary. 'reversal of atrocity'? 'vigilante feminism'?

LangCleg · 11/04/2018 12:32

Ok, so this was a familiar debate among feminists - how do we balance the need for women-only events with the needs of mothers of boy children who do not have suitable childcare? - that on this particular occasion got overheated with a few nasty and personal exchanges. Then Julian, who herself got overheated, wrote up her side of it.

I get it now. Thanks all for explaining!
