Lily Madigan - Twitter Update

DarthArts · 07/04/2018 20:43

LM has changed the name of their twitter account, deleted all previous posting history and unblocked lots of users.

Has tweeted (in response to someone else) that non-one has spoken to them about online behaviour.

LM did get in a twitter spat after comparing trans struggles to racism and slavery and got a lot of previous supporters complaining. LM did issue a twitter apology about this then took a twitter break and has resurfaced with this new "clean" account.

@Madigan_lils

So not sure what's happened here.

I would hope maybe a degree of self reflection.

As ever, let's make sure any posts are not offensive please.

I assume someone had a word and then the apology happened. I really respect her but I was surprised at jennifer’s response. Don’t get the fawning thing at all. This is an adult, not a child, an adult who has gloated about having access to women party members’ “pretty data “ .

I was a mum at 20. Studying, working, being vocal on Twitter trying to reduce stigma around young parents. I was responsible for what I put on social media and would never dream of blaming my age if I made a discriminatory or inflammatory comment. Lily Madigan is not a teenager and if you are involved in any kind of Twitter activism, you accept the rough with the smooth.

Look at the teenagers (actual teenagers) from the school in Parkland. They respond to masses of online hate from people three or four times their age with dignity, they engage in debate, they consider what they say before they say it. They have more class and online self-awareness in their little fingers than Madigan has in an entire body.

Lily's not a teenager but is younger than my son who I still view as vulnerable and sometimes not making sensible decisions.
I'm more annoyed with the LP allowing a young man to be a woman's officer as I presume CLPs have LGBT officers and branches elect reps to the CLP (or did years ago when I was in the LP) and I'd have thought as Lily is under 26 he could also be a young socialist (if they still call it that) rep as well, so plenty of ways on to the CLP without taking a woman's place.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/04/2018 21:41

I hope so. If people cab be suspended for talking basic biology then constantly comparing black women to some sub human species has to result in some kind if action.

Doobigetta · 07/04/2018 21:40

To be fair to LM, that was a decent apology and came across as genuine.

DarthArts · 07/04/2018 21:35

Red - it's certainly plausible.

Deleting thousands of tweets is a pretty radical step, there must have been some catalyst for it.

Thanks.

Well hopefully LM will learn from this.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/04/2018 21:29

Agree with Gasp. I know plenty of women who had responsible positions and/or were mothers at 20. My Grandfather had been working for six years by then. My best friend was studying and caring for a terminally ill parent having lost the other two years earlier. Being carefree at 20 is fine, obv, but LM has chosen this role and with it comes accountability. You can’t behave appallingly and then plead youth.

Mrsmadevans · 07/04/2018 21:29

I don't know who this is missing the point but think l am glad

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/04/2018 21:28

I can’t find them. I suspect I’m blocked. I’m on iPad so can’t read the tweets well either.

This looks like Lily Tessa Madigan. Is that correct? Twitter is coming up with nothing when I search. Please let me know thx.

KatherinaMinola · 07/04/2018 21:26

Sorry, Facebook post for that one above.

KatherinaMinola · 07/04/2018 21:25

This has happened the other day:
Councillor suspended over anti-Semitic tweet

I imagine everyone has had a memo from the comms team.

Weebo · 07/04/2018 21:24

Here's a screenshot on Twitter, Thanks

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 07/04/2018 21:19

Is anyone kind enough to post the deleted tweets in larger text? Can’t read them on iPad.

RedToothBrush · 07/04/2018 21:18

There's an election coming up. And there's been a big thing within the Labour Party lately about stuff on social media not looking terribly clever to other people.

All party members especially those who hold positions within the party are probably being gently reminded that this might be an issue because of the anti-semitism row.

I would suggest here, that there is an awareness that there might be one or two controversial posts.

And I do wonder if more has been said.

Just the other day I was posting about how those TRAs in political positions were aggrevating the problem in particular. And how a grown up needed to step in and defuse it.

Mn has tried to defuse today. Lily has deleted a load of stuff. I note the LGBT LD have gone awol for two days. So I wonder. Pure coincidence?

Or has something more happened behind the scenes?

Has someone stepped up to the plate and said that, this is getting out of hand?

I personally, don't tend to believe in coincidence.

I hope to god, that someone has said, calm the fuck down. Because its really not in anyone's interest the way it was going.

You're stalking a teenager on twitter?

No. Quit it with the hyperbole.

  1. Lily is not a teenager.
  2. Lily is an elected officer within the Labour Party.
  3. Reading and commenting on someone's public tweets is not remotely close to stalking. Stalking is a criminal offence and MNHQ would not tolerate it.
KatherinaMinola · 07/04/2018 21:15

That racist tweet would be a resigning offence for most elected public officials.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/04/2018 21:14

LM isn't employed. It's a volunteer role. Volunteer roles are very tricky when it comes to accountability.

WillowWept · 07/04/2018 21:14

I'm still blocked.

Gutted

not

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/04/2018 21:13

When I was 20, I was studying full-time, working full-time in the holidays and on the point of getting married. I could have had children, been in the armed forces or the police force or training to be a nurse or a doctor or a teacher or doing any number of really responsible things, all of which I'd have been held accountable for if anything had gone wrong. I don't get this 'poor vulnerable teenager' thing at all.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/04/2018 21:12

There have been a few racist comments. Specifically relating to women. What the hell is wrong with the Labour Party that they have allowed LM to stay on as women’s officer ?

SirVixofVixHall · 07/04/2018 21:11

I can’t believe LM is still employed.

PiggyPoos · 07/04/2018 21:10

Following politically active people and talking about what they say is hardly stalking.

Hannh

I'm not stalking....

It came up on my twitter feed from someone I follow.

It is of interest as LM holds an official position within the Labour Party. What LM tweets is therefore a reflection of the current state/position of the party as despite some imho offensive tweets they have, to my knowledge not been censured by the party.

LM is not therefore not a private individual - by their own choice.

LM is also not a teenager any more.
