Please don't leave Bumble...I do think this thread can be supportive and I am so sorry it got derailed. No one here would ever say or think that your daughter (or anyone else) deserves it. Class, religion, race do not matter...it is misogyny clear and simple.

eloisesparkle · 15/04/2018 10:46

Oh BumbleFuddle.
I really didn't see this on any post.
Whose post are you alluding to ?
What poster ?
I've only seen messages by posters who have been supportive of you- as they rightly should be.
I really hope you get justice.
This case has shown that attitudes are changing. The awful misogyny will not be tolerated.
Contact UR again. Hopefully now the scales have been forcibly removed will have come off their eyes, they will view your allegations differently.

treaclesoda · 15/04/2018 10:46

Bumble that's not at all what I meant, not at all. I'm so sorry that I've worded it wrongly and it has come across all wrong.

I know what I'm trying to say and it's coming out all wrong. My comment was entirely related to the abuse on Facebook, not about the background of victims. Not even slightly about the background of victims.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 15/04/2018 10:45

That is a good Guardian article, thanks Chaos.

Badgerthebodger · 15/04/2018 10:44

Bumble please don’t pay any mind to the ridiculous direction this thread is going in. I believe your DD, there’s nothing she did to deserve what happened to her. A PP posted some info about a confidential support line and if your DD feels able this may be a way for her to get some help. I wish things were different, I wish it had never happened to her (and Zibbidoo Flowers) and I wish it was easy for her to report it. As someone said much earlier in the thread, trials and decisions such as this case just show women how futile it is to report a rape. This is something which needs to be looked at from the top to the bottom of the current broken system, where everything is stacked against the survivor.

I just want your DD, and anyone else who has survived a rape or sexual assault, to know that I believe her and thousands of other woman stand with me saying the same Flowers again, I hope she (and you) can find some peace.

NotTakenUsername · 15/04/2018 10:41

treaclesoda That is absolutely not true. But while debating whether or not this case was about angry white working class Protestant men losing their power was vaguely on topic, that sort of conversation is certainly for another thread.

Especially to Bumfuddle, but to all I apologise for pursuing that trail, but just felt like the original comment and every reply couldn’t be left uncontested as I did not wish my silence to be confused with agreement of views that I find so repugnant.

So... how to we get back on track. What do we do next? How do we keep people talking about this and keep people thinking about stamping out misogyny in N. Ireland and beyond?

However, this is all a side issue.

The issue really is the misogyny at the heart of N Ireland society, which I believe to be far far worse than in the rest of the UK or the rest of Ireland.

According to this article SO is on the verge of signing with an English club Exeter and PJ to a French club as mentioned before.

Life just goes on for these people. No real repercussions for their disgusting behaviour and view of women

peanut2017 · 15/04/2018 10:10

www.google.ie/amp/s/amp.independent.ie/sport/rugby/ulster-rugby/i-am-even-more-determined-to-prove-myself-olding-and-jackson-respond-after-irfu-sack-irish-rugby-players-36806258.html

Doesn't look like from their statements that PJ or SO have any intention of not getting back into rugby. The sense I get from this article is that being dropped by UR is making them more determined to prove themselves.

I really hope this conversation keeps going and doesn't just go away with time.

Chaosandchocolate · 15/04/2018 10:07

I'd like to ask those making comments about appearance/intellect and religion to have those posts deleted please. There is no place for them here on this thread. They add nothing to the thread and they are hurtful.

Yes.

Really sad about the way this thread has gone. It’s not why it (and the original) was started and it’s become really offensive. I don’t want this thread to be zapped. I’d like to ask those making comments about appearance/intellect and religion to have those posts deleted please. There is no place for them here on this thread. They add nothing to the thread and they are hurtful.

@sashh please tell me your post is a joke?

What a really silly post to make about someone looking Irish by having deep set eyes and a downward looking frown???

Absolutely ridiculous assumption. There are Irish people who are Church of Ireland? My friend being one of them and she doesn't look different based on your description?

I am genuinely shocked at your post

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/04/2018 09:56

I hope this thread doesn’t get derailed. It feels like there are two different conversations going on at the moment, and one of them has me completely lost as to its relevance.

Oh Lord @Sashh I have seen you here for many years and have pretty much always had you down as a good egg with moderate views.

That is one of the most racist remarks I have come across in a long time.
I am Irish, middle class, as peasant looking as they come, and I am not Catholic.
I have worked in pretty much every English speaking country you can list off the top of your head, and I have been subjected to the assumptions that I am :
-church (Catholic) bound

  • illiterate or barely educated
  • a drunkard or fond of alcohol (I drink a bottle of wine a year and my parents are teetotal)
  • backwards (I'm university educated with a degree in a profession that means I have walked into jobs all over the world)
  • like diddlee-iddlee music (loathe)
  • support the IRA of violence in general (loathe)
  • lazy
  • temperamental

There is blind spot when it comes to racism against Irish people and it fuels the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland....as people for one group do not want to be associated with the above assumptions about them.

The issue with these guys has a certain element of being part of the more powerful group in terms of background, income, sex, school etc and their religious background is probably part of it BUT it is not why they are badly behaved young men.

Please, please leave it out.

iheartmichellemallon · 15/04/2018 09:44

At least that's something Feminist. I also think that losing their jobs will hopefully set the tone for other rugby players - even if not not scared about the law, they might worry about Club repercussions so will hopefully think twice before behaving like either Olding or Jackson, or even engaging in 'banter' in such a disgusting way about women generally.

(Be the change you want to see - great phrase NotTaken & sums up how I feel.)

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 15/04/2018 09:42

Unless things have changed in the last five years there's just not the cult of rugby hero worship over there

I guess Johnny Wilkinson’s stint at Toulon passed you by. He was feted like a god down there.

The French clubs, especially the ones in south west France have rugby mad fans. If you play for Toulouse, Clermont, Castre, Montpellier then you are treated like local heroes. It has always been that way.

FeministBadger · 15/04/2018 09:24

Well if he ends up at a French club he's gonna get a heck of a lot of culture shock. Unless things have changed in the last five years there's just not the cult of rugby hero worship over there and he'll be expected to act like a respectful grown up just like everybody else.
