Is it that these younger boys were born into all the blue/pink shit, girl/boy lego etc that became so prevalent after our generation?

I think so.

And the ELC pink globe...

We all knew that was wrong and complained about that because we didn't want our daughters to think only pink things were for them. I don't think any of us predicted that this would be the conclusion to it!

hipsterfun · 31/03/2018 13:01

Guardian??? ... Not ready to reconsider yet though.

I’m going to need the most grovelling of grovelling public apologies before I’ll forgive. Forgetting’s going to be a stretch, tbh.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/03/2018 12:57

Angry, self entitled men (in tights) with loud voices and license to bully.

In another lifw/time they'd have been skin heads, teddy boys or black shirts.

Flomper · 31/03/2018 12:55

I agree. I went to university in the early 90s and there were lots of straight boys (and gay boys) in makeup. Kurt Kobain was their role model. Nobody gave a fuck. Or actually there was plenty of that! anybody remember the James song "Laid"? "Dressed me up in women's clothes, messed around with gender roles, lined my eyes ans called me pretty" was about a male/female relationship afaik and was our mantra. Fun times.

What the hell changed? Is it that these younger boys were born into all the blue/pink shit, girl/boy lego etc that became so prevalent after our generation? We really have regressed.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/03/2018 12:44

We had a gender discussion yesterday (me and the 'I know more than you about gender issues' 13 year old).

It ended with me saying 'I was a feminist back in the 80s and 90s and we've actually regressed from there'. Thinking about it, I really do believe it. I didn't see this coming.

TerfsUp · 31/03/2018 12:40

I saw that article on Buzzfeed several days ago and my eyes still haven't stopped rolling. What an ego.

Ekphrasis · 31/03/2018 12:37

Followed some links from Hadley piece to this:

Guy's got style!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/03/2018 12:30

Guardian??? It was banned in casa fekko yesterday. Not ready to reconsider yet though.

TheDukesOfHazzard · 31/03/2018 12:27

Amazed to see this in the guardian!

no comments though.

AreYouTerfEnough · 31/03/2018 12:15

Someone at the guardian must have been asleep or attending a transmeeting to have let that one through 😮

Good article though.

SunsetBeetch · 31/03/2018 12:09

Excellent from Hadley. Although I'm surprised The Guardian published it!

War in the news room!

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2018 11:52

Never mind Shon's dissing of MN on twitter - there is a better description in the guardian(!!) Mumsnet, a pleasing hotbed of radical feminism these days

Tackytriceratops · 31/03/2018 11:50

The phonics of the word Fay or fae or Faye sound very female, feminine, feme.

Howyoualldoworkme · 31/03/2018 11:42

Right, now I'm more awake I put my library research hat on and I found this
Fairies, transgender men who adopted a flamboyant, “tough girl” style of femininity and who engaged in sexual relations with conventionally masculine men, became fixtures in many urban working-class and immigrant neighborhoods
in a chapter in this book, published in 1932
www.amazon.co.uk/Scarlet-Pansy-Robert-Scully/dp/0823272559/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforum-21&qid&sr

Or is that too obscure?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/03/2018 11:26

Tinkerbell will die if you don't say you believe on fairies!

Kneedeepinunicorns · 31/03/2018 11:24

Unfortunately every time I hear the phrase 'literal violence' with its origins, a voice in my head starts chanting 'I do believe in fairies! I do! I do!"

I have idly thought about approaching my MP and requiring that denial of fairies becomes hate speech. After all many people have a strong inner feeling they exist and identify with the fairy mythology, there is a widespread range of anecdotal evidence and fragments of dodgy science, and it's time we got past these outdated notions of facts and biology.

NotTerfNorCis · 31/03/2018 11:18

I think it's to do with faeries. Jane Fae has faeries in his Twitter profile. But 'fairy' is or was an insult for a gay man, so I don't quite get the usage here.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/03/2018 11:13

Whatever - it's not a compliment!

TerfsUp · 31/03/2018 11:09

I was thinking 'fey' as in 'twee'.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/03/2018 10:34

I was thinking feigh as in fake!

Tanith · 31/03/2018 10:31

^What's with all this fay stuff? Jane Fae, Shon Fay?
I know it's various versions of fairy but why?^
I wondered that, until AskprofessionalFekko posted earlier in the thread: “Feigh - I got it!” so I looked it up. Urban expression for ejaculation, it seems. How very edgy 🙄

Tanith · 31/03/2018 10:23

Men did makeup in the 70s, too.
This is an album cover done in 1976 for The Stranglers, with the men in front heavily made up. They had a nasty reputation for violence and misogyny in their early days.

boatyardblues · 31/03/2018 09:12

DH and I have just enjoyed MrB’s hip hop history. YouTube has given lots of quirky extroverts a platform and the variety of their output is strangely heartwarming.

Xenophile · 31/03/2018 00:16

Well, there's a thing, and no mistake!
