Is Lily Maynard in here? I just bumped into her blog when I was looking for something else... Definitely has the feel of a mumsnetter!

Morning all!
We try to take the Michelle Obama approach here, as you all know , so in that spirit we have deleted some posts that we found a little goading in tone.

HakunaDentata · 29/03/2018 10:08

Terfs thanks I was feeling inspired.

FarFrom
Imagine saying to someone with a disability or mental health condition

How did we get here? How can it be that in modern, democratic and free Britain in the early 21st Century, women are frightened to meet or talk about law, politics and society? Don’t we have institutions and, more important, social norms that say this shouldn’t happen, can’t happen? Shouldn’t this stuff get the attention and interest of politicians who are supposed to listen to all the different strands of public opinion, and ensure that everyone gets a chance to speak and be heard?

I don’t know either Sad

I think it’s because we’re second class citizens and we don’t live in a democracy, just an illusion of one.

MsMcWoodle · 29/03/2018 10:03

In the words of the Clash:

'Let fury have the hour, anger can be power,
You know that you can use it.'

ErrolTheDragon · 29/03/2018 10:00

Mumsnet is our safe space to discuss important topics relating to us as biological women

But not, I hope never, a 'safe space' in the appalling way this term is now being misused to mean 'echo chamber'!

The rise of 'safe spaces' in that sense, while simultaneously real, physical safe spaces for women are being threatened makes me sick.

'It's so sad to see so much anger'

In the words of Malcom X anger is a gift

Worth reposting a link to James Kirkup's recent article in the Spectator, link here: blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/03/fear-and-loathing-grips-the-gender-debate/

Its bloody good!
Extract here:

" Second, the people responsible for the fear and abuse these women suffer are not representative of transgender people as a whole; the transgender population must be assumed to contain as wide a distribution of vice and virtue as any other group. Indeed, some of those involved in this debate suspect that at least some of the real authors of that fear and abuse are not transwomen but men intent on frightening and diminishing women. Certainly, some male supporters of transgender rights seem to take a certain pleasure in the anxieties of women who question that agenda.

How did we get here? How can it be that in modern, democratic and free Britain in the early 21st Century, women are frightened to meet or talk about law, politics and society? Don’t we have institutions and, more important, social norms that say this shouldn’t happen, can’t happen? So Shon Faye went to a traditional all boys school and got a job in the City.

So much oppression. So brave.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 29/03/2018 09:25

Feigh - I just got it.

Also reposting this here. Don't feed the trolls/rise to it. It will be reposted out of context and spread widely. Say what needs to be said but with consideration for the wider picture:

I totally appreciate that people are getting very cross about the way some people are acting.

I also think it is important to remember that there are plenty of very decent and also some very vulnerable and targeted trans-identified individuals in the U.K. And across the world.

We do them, us, humanity and the rational compassionate debate sorely needed in this area NO FAVOURS by making generalisations about trans people that are sparked by irritation at some people's actions and goading.

Let's say what we need to say, but with respect, understanding and consideration for the wider picture.

TerfsUp · 29/03/2018 09:10

Great poem, Hakuna.

waves to Shon. Sorry, Shon. We're part of a club that you can't join, no matter how much you want to.

GrockleBocs · 29/03/2018 09:09

Mogle I'm the same and I agree. I don't want an NT person to tell me I'm doing autism wrong. Actually thinking about it, a lot of women are told we're doing it wrong.

Daff0dil · 29/03/2018 08:54

Next up, Alison Grant Milbank, a literary scholar specialising in religion and culture, Anglican priest at Southwell Minster and professor at the University of Nottingham has been next to face the weight of censorship and smearing from TRAs

Wow. I can't believe there's so much hate on one thread.

Yes shons opinions are just hateful aren’t they?

You do mean shon right?

The person calling for the erasure of women? You can’t possibly mean the calm, measured, factual, science based ‘actually, no...’ responses on this thread?

No of course not, because that would be ludicrous. disagreeing with someone is not hateful toddlers and people with low impulse control don’t like it, narcissists don’t like it. Because they can’t deal with calm disagreement.

This is why no platforming is such an issue by the way. Back in my day (the late Jurassic) we would actively go and see speakers we disagreed with at university just to argue with them in a calm and logical way. We’d floor them sometimes. There was no whining about being triggered, we just sharpened our debating claws and demolished any racist/sexist argument with debate.
You no platform and you lose that. Youvjust get the nodebate shit and end up in an Orwellian nightmare.

If you have an opinion, or a theory, you need to be able to back it up with facts and reason. If you can’t, you need to entertain the possibility the you might, just might, be wrong.

Or you can block anyone who disagrees with you and keep pecking that mirror.

Mogleflop · 29/03/2018 08:45

"Imagine saying to someone with a disability or mental health condition,
‘I’m sorry to tell you,
But you will never be like us’ "

The thing is, I'm disabled, I'm autistic. I will never be like "you".

This isn't a negative thing as I am still as damn valuable and as much of a person as you, but it is a qualifiable difference between us.

When did calmly explaining differences become a value-laden act of cruelty?

Datun · 29/03/2018 08:37

@LeapingLlama

It's sometimes it's very hard on here to know if someone is genuine or not. So I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Have a read of this link below. It's a collection of some of the more major acts of abuse and violence towards women over this one issue.

It's not a collection of tweets. It's an analysis of exactly how women are being forced to capitulate.
