@Ellenripleysalienbaby

Yes - posted about that on another thread (the Venice one).

It's a well known tactic on twitter to effectively deny a right of reply.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 29/03/2018 12:52

Thank you for the link to the post! I’m setting that aside for reading on a flight.

Reluctant
That sounds like an amazing thread, do you happen to know what it was called, or have a link?

ReluctantCamper · 29/03/2018 11:40

I love this thread. It reminds me of the thread that first peak transed a few people. Started by a married man, he was asking AIBU, I've been invited to a hen do and will go dressed as a woman, as that is my alter ego. My wife is not happy.

He was expecting 'you go hun, your wife needs to understand you'. And he did get a bit of that. But thanks mainly to Offred it turned into a bunch of intelligent, articulate women understanding how a man dressing as a woman and saying he's a man is fine, but a man dressing as a woman and saying he's a women reinforces toxic gender stereotypes and ultimately diminishes us all - men included. Chappy got left behind by the intelligent, informed debate and his posts got more and more put out as the thread went on.

Which is a long winded way of saying I love you guys while you simultaneously drive me nuts Grin

Not read all the thread yet, but thought I'd check this Shon out on Twitter and I'm blocked. I'd never heard of 'her' before. Most bizarre!

Hi Leaping.

I understand. I hate the mockery. I think it’s ineffective especially when in reply to something said years ago.

And most of what AngryAttackKittens says I don’t like.

But I realised it wasn’t for me to tell her to be nice.

She isn’t just failing to mind her manners, it’s a political act.

Also, she doesn’t give a shit whether I like her tone or not.

53rdWay · 29/03/2018 10:51

Indeed Datun. And it was definitely Mumsnet that started that irreversible unravelling process for me. I’d spent a good few years juuuuuust about holding the cognitive dissonance together, but once it starts to go...

Mustang27 · 29/03/2018 10:44

Oh god the comment about dick sucking and tits talk at school and being sluttier just made me feel sick. No self respecting women would say that.

I have no issue with trans people but I do with vile ones and they certainly are.

If you think your body is all you have and treat yourself like an object it says way too much about you.

If you truly wish to be a woman you would stand against objectification, right?

I stay away from these threads as I don't feel like I have much to add but this one has made me genuinely sad. How can you be expected to have anyone take you seriously when you talk like that, but I bet they do and that's even more worrying. There will be young people out there idolising them because they think they are being liberal so perpetuating the exact shit that I don't want my children to have to deal with.

Datun · 29/03/2018 10:44

Some of the complaints do have a "stop making me think about this, the cognitive dissonance required to maintain the right on view is giving me migraines" tone to them.

Indeed. The spin is breathtakingly effective.

Unravelling it takes time, effort and patience.

Fortunately, once it starts to unravel, the rate increases exponentially.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 29/03/2018 10:41

You will definitely get the vapours of you visit grandma in hospital and nurse doris is arguing with her that sheis a woman and must be allowed to examine her stitches whilst granny is saying 'but you have a beard! 6"3! Hands like shovels!'.

53rdWay · 29/03/2018 10:37

That is, uncomfortable in the sense of cognitive dissonance - people on here would be talking about the ethics of transitioning children, and my head would go “but that all sounds totally reasonable and of course I’d agree with that... but that’s not what I’m supposed to think... does not compute, must be something I’m missing somewhere, ARGH SHUT UP.”

53rdWay · 29/03/2018 10:36

if it helps at all, Angry, I used to get annoyed at “all the trans threads”, and it was in part because I was growing more and more uncomfortable with the divide between what I was told to believe as a good little libfem and what people were actually saying on here.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/03/2018 10:34

On the too many trans threads complaints, can these people not just scroll past stuff they're "bored" by? I mean, if I can ignore the parking threads...

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 29/03/2018 10:32

I would say that Mumsnet is THE main reason that the self I’d threat has come to public attention. They are the quiet heroes that are protecting women, by continuing to give us a voice and for that I’m extremely grateful

Hear Hear! Flowers

PositivelyPERF · 29/03/2018 10:28

Exactly. The rules are different here because it's run by and for women and, therefore, is a place where we can be honest about the endless abuse and gaslighting the male-dominated world heaps upon us.

That’s so true, Jennifer. I imagine there are probably men working in MNHQ, but they won’t be able to decide the direction that Mumsnet takes, as the organisation is run BY women FOR women. And those women obviously have the ovaries to take no shit or permit men to take over. (BTY I’m not assuming that the MNHQ men would want to do that) I wonder if that is because they aren’t (sorry, just guessing here) young, right on, men pleasing women, but females with actual real life experience of what crap women have to put up with?

When the self I’d situation and the risk to women was originally talked about on Mumsnet, they moderated very heavily and closed down any mention of the situation, but there is a big difference between Mumsnet and the other avenues, such as Twatter and Facebook. Mumsnet actually respects their members and decided to, listen to us and let us speak. I would say that Mumsnet is THE main reason that the self I’d threat has come to public attention.

For all the posters that bleat on about too many trans threads, there are many times more women, men and transsexuals posting, analysing and discussing how women, as a truly abused group, can protect ourselves. I can’t imagine the pressure MNHQ comes under from the TRAs/MRAs to shut us down. They are the quiet heroes that are protecting women, by continuing to give us a voice and for that I’m extremely grateful. 💐

Daff0dil: Next up, Alison Grant Milbank, a literary scholar

Thanks for that link. I studied under Alison and she was ace -so smart and lovely. I'm really glad she gets it.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/03/2018 10:23

Thanks, Helen. For demonstrating that MN is not a 'safe space' echo chamber, but a place where even-handed moderation is applied so that rational discussion can take place. Thanks

AngryAttackKittens · 29/03/2018 10:20

Facebook was used to coordinate the attack on the women on their way to a meeting at Speakers Corner. Shouldn't Shon be arguing for them to be punished/censured for allowing that to happen on their platform?

SunsetBeetch · 29/03/2018 10:19

You do a great job Helen.
