Apparently the pupils have requested it.

I'd be asking the question why on earth a girl transitioning to be a boy would want to stay in an all-girls' school anyway? If they genuinely see themselves as male, wouldn't they at least prefer to be amongst males at an all-boys or mixed?

Very odd.

The article is a really bad report of a quite bad report and doesn't bear scrutiny at all.
The girls can already wear trousers.
The school held a conference on feminism a couple of weeks ago and this was the only line from the whole day that was picked up.
The school is undergoing a lot of building work just now, the girls have apparently been discussing the desire for gender-neutral loos (which would seem to me to be a simple matter of signage - "student" loos rather than "girls'" loos), the head said "why wouldn't we consider it" in the circs.
Genuinely, a fuss about nothing. The school is incredibly sane.

I am not sure I want to click on the link / what is this group about?

Kyanite · 24/03/2018 14:52

My teenage daughter says that the Social Justice Warriors in the US on reddit and tumblr are driving all of this.

Seems to be boardering on the religous cults we used to hear about

I don't think you can legally change your sex under age 18 at the moment. To get a GRC you need to be over 18

Exactly. In practice this is maintaining sex-segregated space throughout the school

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 14:32

LifelongVaginaOwner · 24/03/2018 14:29

Personally I think these schools are being quite clever. They are very clear that they don't admit anyone who is physically or legally male. If anything they are reinforcing the idea the segregation (where in place) should take place on the grounds of sex not 'gender'.

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 14:18

I mean the ponds a men only / women only but fairly well known as being gay friendly.

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 14:17

The angering thing is that GG for instance have always been very feminist. Swimming ponds (male and female) good (rare) public hangouts for gay men / lesbians. Most women have little interest in invading gay male only spaces though, or going in and changing with men, the same cannot be said the other way around.

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 14:16

No I agree the whole thing is entirely illogcal I'm making the exact same point on another thread.

I fear though that if we press for logic it won't go our way and we will lose all our women's / girls institutions. GG has already gone, the swimming ponds at hampstead, changing facilities in ? numbers of shop chains & etc

When we say that's illogical, the answer has never been "true we'll stick to single sex".

concert · 24/03/2018 14:10

I guess I just want to ensure they do critically think about this.

For example the discussion about gender neautral language.

Again if they say they support a student in the future who transitions and as the head says becomes a "boy" then they are saying they believe people can change their sex so again why wouldn't they then have to accept a male wanting to transition to a girl?

I probably am not explaining myself well..

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 14:03

A lot of single sex girls / women's stuff are quite feminist in the way that they approach things, some in an explicit way, others not explicit but completely there as they centre females.

This is a good way of watering that down actually.

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 14:02

I would prefer if GG for example was for females

Rather than feminines

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 14:01

Its says in the article

That the school will only admit females
But if a girl who is there decides to transition, they would be supportive

I don't really want confused girls being kicked out and replaced with boys, do you?

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/03/2018 13:58

The whole thing makes no sense at all

slithytove · 24/03/2018 13:52

Presumably if a pupil transitioned they would no longer have a place at the school as it’s an all girls school?

Adarajames · 24/03/2018 13:52

Surely if it's an all girl school, then anyone that decides to change to be ftm then they should be asked to leave the school as are no longer, by their own demand (whether physically possible or not), in that 'all girls' category?! Hmm

Ifonlyus · 24/03/2018 13:46

'the school have installed gender-neutral toilets in case some girls want to deny their biology and commit themselves to a life-changing hormone treatment, surgery and infertility' Funny how it doesn't add that part.

concert · 24/03/2018 13:44

I wonder if I should start a thread I. Secondary education as I would like to see how this was presented to staff and students....

Ifonlyus · 24/03/2018 13:44

Why is transitioning being discussed as if it's a lifestyle choice? Gender dysphoria is an appalling mental condition.

Yes - quite. It's written in the same tone as if they'd said 'the school have installed a new cricket pitch, should any of the girls decide they want to play cricket' or 'the school have installed a new robotics lab in case any of the girls decide they want to go into that industry'

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 13:43

Yes the whole tihng is entirely illogical in short, becasue people know that you can't change sex, and everyone seems ot have a different point up to which they are prepared to accommodate to be kind.

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 13:42

Well the actual answer is becasue everyone knows the former is a girl and the latter is a boy.

Push too hard and you end up with the situation at GG. Boys IN girls OUT.

And prisons. Male rapists in the women's prison (has happened), female shoplifters in with the men (not happened as far as I know and hopefully won't).

Everyone knows what a man is and what a woman is and what the different risks are, and why it is women who are at risk if you put a TIM in with them, and why it is the TIF at risk if you put them in a men's prison.

Segregating based on invisible feeligs is ridiculous.

I am glad these girls got their trousers and some more private toilet facilities though!

concert · 24/03/2018 13:37

I still think the question needs to be asked of the Head.

If they would full support a female student wanting to be a transman why wouldn't bey welcome a male wanting to be trans woman at the school??

SardineQueen · 24/03/2018 13:35

Article says no I think (v small on my screen) but a girl already there who "transitioned" would be supported.

Unlike GG where the guidance is to manage girls out of the organisation, even if they are not IDing as boys but as agender etc.

They redefined last year (without asking anyone) as an org for female gender ie they ONLY allow people who self identify as a girl, irrespective of sex.

This is interesting as many people do not have an internal sense of gender (despite the trans orgs statements that the vast majority of people have a "strongy felt internal sense of gender" - who did they ask? Trans people presumably who by definition would. Women on the whole don't seem to. Is it a trans thing? I think it could be a male thing. Don't know but I do know that on a thread here about 4 years ago only 1 woman out of a couple hundred probably said they had an internal sense of gender).

Therefore the GG is now CLOSED to most girls, in theory. Although in practice hopefully they aren't asking them in the groups, explaining about gender ID and internal sense, getting honest responses (I don't have that feeling) and then kicking them out. Maybe that comes later.

Forcing girls to identify with femininity otherwise kick them out of GG is what it boils down to - I have NEVER seen anything that is not around stereotypes when explaining what "feeling like a woman / girl" means.

OldCrone · 24/03/2018 13:33

"in case any pupils decide to transition"

Why is transitioning being discussed as if it's a lifestyle choice? Gender dysphoria is an appalling mental condition. Girls wanting to wear trousers and do 'boy things' is personality - and they're still girls.

But maybe in this case the girls have seen a way to get more privacy as others have said.
