Matthew Wright apparently having an argy bargy with channel 5 over Ann Hegarty's comments last week Grin

Telling the truth should not be restricted to journalists and people with Asperger’s. It is terrifying how quickly compelled speech is being implemented in this country.

DisorderedOrder · 19/03/2018 20:31

He's probably more educated on the topic than most since the wright stuff regularly trawl MN threads for topics for the show, which is ironic if he claims to hate MN. Journalist is stretching it a bit though, he's a TV presenter.

Ereshkigal · 19/03/2018 20:27

Yes I spend a lot of time upvoting comments by people I doubt I'd have many other views in common with!

Ereshkigal · 19/03/2018 20:26

PL is 30/31.

LondonPainter · 19/03/2018 20:18

So encouraged to read this. I saw Anne do the apology on Friday though and wonder how much she was told; would she have gone along with it if she knew about Matthew's protest? I like to think she would have shown solidarity.

rowdywoman1 · 19/03/2018 19:57

Channel 5 have a record for this: they ensured that India Willoughby (the first to be kicked off Celebrity Big Brother) exited the house to an unheard of 'silent' crowd response - no boos allowed unlike every other exit in the history of the programme.
The response that IW got when interviewed on exit was fawning and completely ignored the bullying narcissistic behaviour which got them booted out first. Channel 5 have actively contributed to the toxic delusionary atmosphere which promotes lies and falsehoods in the interest of equality I'm afraid.

busyboysmum · 19/03/2018 19:50

Go Matthew that's fantastic. I used to watch his show a lot on maternity leave and whilst I didn't agree with a lot of what he said and he's not a big fan of mumsnet or breeders 😁 I have the utmost respect for him for standing up for what he believes in here. It is orwellian the way our language is being policed at the moment and we shouldn't have to speak things that we know aren't true.

CadyHeron · 19/03/2018 19:48

Reading the comments under the article, loads are starting to think. You don't have to register to up or down comments to make them best or worst rated, so think I'm going to go and green arrow some of them....

Agrona · 19/03/2018 19:48

PL is 54? Wink

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 19/03/2018 19:45

It absolutely is not a mental health condition - I agree what an incorrect statement to make in the hope of spinning some sympathy that Anne shouldn't have said it.

It's the truth - if she'd denied the Holocaust, then apologise.

In the changing room if our kids say: look a man over there with a penis, are we going to apologise because we are not meant to notice it.

PAris still has a penis - in that case the correct term is you are still a man? Not used to be - surely?

Ihavesomeballs · 19/03/2018 19:41

Have you read the comments?? Much of them very anti pic and about denying reality...... Go Mathew!! This is what we need.

LabourLostMe · 19/03/2018 19:40

So MW is not going to apologise and TV bosses will not let him back on air until he does. Show cancelled then. His show is really established and popular. Many newspapers will be interested in this story.

I am not a fan of MW but good for him on this one.

GaraMedouar · 19/03/2018 19:35

Good for Matthew. I like Anne - she just says it as it is.

TheGoldenBough · 19/03/2018 19:30

So Channel 5 have 'peaked' MW? Good. Hopefully he won't be the only one...

TerfsUp · 19/03/2018 19:19

What a rubbish article.

"Anne Hegerty is known for having Asperger's Syndrome, one of whose manifestations is a tendency to talk brusquely and bluntly. Fellow sufferers are furious at the way they see Anne as being badly treated and picked on because of her debilitating mental condition."

I have Asperger's. I don't "suffer" from it. I suffer from the stupidity of other people. And it's not a "debilitating mental condition". It's a neurological condition that does not affect my intellect at all.

Ereshkigal · 19/03/2018 19:18

Well done Matthew!

LadyMcLadyCrisps · 19/03/2018 19:16

Have just posted this on the other PL vs AH, thread! I am gobsmacked, I hope this is true, if so, Matthew (not usually my fave person) needs a massive round of applause!!!

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 19/03/2018 19:12

Well done Matthew Wright.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/03/2018 19:09

Well done Matthew Wright.
I like it when TV presenters stay true to the ideals of their journalist past and show a bit of integrity.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 19/03/2018 19:05

It's true.

Paris Lees was a boy.

Now she's a bitch.

No apology necessary.

Wow. Who knew?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 19/03/2018 18:39

Oooh

Go Mr Wright

He can be very irritating at times (aren't we all Grin) but overall i like him

LizzieSiddal · 19/03/2018 18:35

“'Matthew is absolutely furious,' confided a source. 'He felt it was time to draw a line in the sand, one he was not prepared to cross. It's a medical fact Paris Lees was born a boy, a fact she has always acknowledged.

'Matthew is a journalist, he believes in facts, in telling the truth. He said I am not apologising for someone telling the truth.”

This is what we need to hear more of. I dint particularly like his show but good for him for sticking up for himself.

HairyBallTheorem · 19/03/2018 18:34

(Incidentally for once I felt a certain degree of sympathy for Lees - and for Hegarty too, who presumably doesn't do terribly well with figurative language. What Lees should have said was "yes, I was AMAB [or whatever phrasing Lees felt comfortable with - as Wright points out, Lees has never hidden the biological facts of their background], but what we're talking about here is the figurative 'old boys' network', i.e. adult men in positions of power who all know each other in virtue of a privileged upper-class upbringing, education, university, and club membership thereafter - and I certainly didn't have any of those advantages."

If Lees had pulled this off, it would have made for good television and a fairly strong debating position, though I can see that the actual phrase used would throw anyone in Lees' position - even though Hegarty's intention was not to engage in a personal attack.)
