James is going to be discussing trans issues today on LBC. His show is on now - not sure what time the segment will start, but should be good!

His daughters are 9 and 11 by the way. They're not toddlers. I'm not sure why he needs to be in changing roomS with them at all, but if he's feeling overprotective or whatever, then USE THE MEN'S!!!

mirialis · 21/03/2018 13:56

Which begs the question, why would he not take them into the men's changing rooms with him instead if NAMALT and women can be just as bad.

Good email Don'tCis - wonder whether you'll get a reply. Let us know if you do.

Lottapianos · 21/03/2018 13:51

'They are a whole lot safer from perving eyes (or worse) in the women's changing rooms if NO MEN of any sort, including JOB, are in there! '

Well you know that, and I know that, but we will be drowned out by JOB's cries of NAMALT and how dare you paint all men as rapists and women can be 'just as bad' and all the other claptrap.

DontCisgenderMe · 21/03/2018 13:36

Copying and pasting something I posted to Hannah about JOB on another thread:

I emailed after the show - once to the station to complain that your account of women's fear of male violence was questioned, asked for numbers, NAMALT etc, whilst the TIM's fear of male violence was immediately accepted, sympathised with and no mention of NAMALT.

The other email was direct to JOB, thanking him for the discussion and giving him some further points to think about. It was in a similar vein, but all phrased as questions to try and walk him through it eg,

'you objected to a woman seeing you as a potential rapist, but not to a transwoman seeing you as a potential transphobe. Why was this?'

'you take your daughter into women's changing rooms. Why don't you respect women's boundaries and privacy?'

'why don't you take your daughter into the men's changing room? Do you feel it is inappropriate for her to be getting undressed in front of men?'

'why don't you want your daughter to be alone around adults in a changing room? Do you feel that she is vulnerable when she is getting undressed?'

'when your daughter is a teenager and shopping alone, do you think that she should undress next to male-bodied people who don't want to use the men's facilities?'

'what should be done to make the men's facilities safe for all male-bodied people to use?'

I just really want to get it out there that if TIMs say they can't use men's facilities, that is because it is MEN who are the violent transphobes. It is not women beating them up in the Gents! Men's attitudes have to change.

The solution therefore has to come from men acting, speaking up and making their facilities safe and welcoming. It is ludicrous that men are telling other men to use the Ladies. It's just an admission that 'yeah, all blokes are violent transphobes and we're not going to do a damn thing about it'.

mirialis · 21/03/2018 13:35

Yes, I was raising my eyebrows at him going into the women's changing rooms with his daughters because he doesn't want to leave them "alone with adults". They are a whole lot safer from perving eyes (or worse) in the women's changing rooms if NO MEN of any sort, including JOB, are in there! And that is aside from the fact of outrageous arrogance displayed by him in thinking we all have to put up with men in the female changing areas because he has daughters.

If they are that young that they need supervision, why would he not take them into the men's changing room?

HomeTerf · 21/03/2018 13:31

You'd think #MeToo would have at least put an end to thick misogynists like JOB saying 'I just don't think there are the numbers' when it comes to the sexual abuse and harassment of women. 4.7 million Facebook users posted it in the first 24 hours last October.

Battleax · 21/03/2018 13:24

And I think JOB is a bloody disgrace going into women's changing rooms with his daughter. My DH would never dream of doing that.

That too. I was gawping at the radio at that bit. The sheer self satisfied entitlement of the man.

Lottapianos · 21/03/2018 13:24

'Nicky Campbell on 5Live said it was a "0.00001% chance'

What a twerp

Men just don't have a clue, do they? They think they know it all, but they know jack about this. They have no clue about the prevalence of perving, leering, sleaze, creepiness, all the way up to criminal behaviour. Women are on alert for this kind of crap almost all the time, and with very good reason. And yet men like these are fine with telling women to get over it and stop hurting men's feelings, and basically stop being hysterical and get back in your box. We've heard it all before, but it doesn't get any less infuriating

Battleax · 21/03/2018 13:23

Nicky Campbell on 5Live said it was a "0.00001% chance" - how exactly does he know that? Has he any idea how many women are sexually harassed and assaulted?

Of course he’s a cheesy DJ but randomly inventing statistics is so so wrong and more than a bit smug.

Plenty of real statistics here;

rapecrisis.org.uk/statistics.php

Time we all start deploying facts against these jokers maybe?

Terftastic · 21/03/2018 12:38

I'm getting increasingly annoyed with the dismissal of women's concerns over sexual assault/voyeurism etc.

Nicky Campbell on 5Live said it was a "0.00001% chance" - how exactly does he know that? Has he any idea how many women are sexually harassed and assaulted?

Has he never seen the lengths predatory men will go to, to gain access to their victims? ID'ing as a woman is easy - say compared to joining the Priesthood. Look at the sports coaches, the scoutmasters, the music teachers who have recently been found out to be abusers. That's hard work - compared to simply saying "I feel like a woman".

And I think JOB is a bloody disgrace going into women's changing rooms with his daughter. My DH would never dream of doing that.

Lottapianos · 21/03/2018 12:23

'As the week has gone on, I’ve gotten angrier and angrier at JOB thinking he can go into the changing room with his girl. '

Same here. The absolute nerve of him, demanding that he be allowed into the women's changing space because he says so. And any women who questions this is made to feel like some kind of fundamentalist nutter, because NAMALT and poor men and their hurt feelings. Take her into the men's changing rooms with you if you have to.

DoctorTwo · 21/03/2018 11:38

I have just tweeted him advising him to Google Shrodinger's Rapist. Hopefully it'll at least make him think.

womanhuman · 21/03/2018 11:23

As the week has gone on, I’ve gotten angrier and angrier at JOB thinking he can go into the changing room with his girl.

We keep the changing rooms men-free to keep all our girls safe. My 8yo knows that if there’s a man in the changing room or toilets, she’s to leave. Please god, don’t ever make me have to unteach her that!

smithsinarazz · 21/03/2018 11:13

Broader question, do we want to have to supervise our growing kids all the time or do we want them to live in a reasonably safe society so they can have a bit of freedom?

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 21/03/2018 10:05

We have to protect JOB from seeing a man sprouting newly formed breasts via hormones. Says he couldn't possibly get changed in male areas

JOB says run along into female area with his intact penis etc.

JOB: reasonable ? No he is the one that is phobic of a fellow man he doesn't understand - wishing to grow chest pads' that won't threaten him- penis on the other hand - that could be involved in an assault - well the females have to risk it.

Can't offend JOB and his eyes, by seeing what some men choose to do to themselves.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/03/2018 09:44

I used to listen to LBC a lot when dc were babies and get really angry, it used to be like the Daily Mail of the air waves with right wing views and narrow minded, uninformed callers. Often very unbalanced 'debate'. Anyway JOB was very much the most reasonable of the presenters (albeit a bit dull to listen to as he loves the sound of his own voice) and the one that my left wing activist friends put on Facebook feeds because of his sympathy for refugees, people neglected by the government, left wing causes etc.

So WHAT REALLY FUCKS ME OFF NOW is a perception that JOB is a reasonable person and therefore we aren't!

Many of my left wing, activist friends would see me as being UNREASONABLE and bigoted just for wanting my own space without penises when I go swimming. I once got flashed at walking home when I was about 25. I wasn't scared because quite frankly there was a naked man in a residential area, I could see he didn't have any weapons, and if anyone was vulnerable it was him. BUT that guy will now just go into a swimming pool and get away with it. Maybe if I saw a flasher and I were naked I would be vulnerable.

And now I would be seen as unreasonable to want my daughters to be able to change without me (and 9 is old enough for my daughter to go into the M and S changing room without a parent as long as that parent is standing by the door JOB you overprotective nob!)

I rarely comment on political issues because since having dc I realise I am uniformed but for fuck sake where is the debate that can make women like me better informed? If I wasn't on mumsnet (spending time on frivolous boards like christmas, housekeeping, style and beauty) I wouldn't have a clue.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 20/03/2018 23:54

Does anyone have a link to the lbc clip with the wonderful Sweary?

mirialis · 20/03/2018 22:32

Sweary - thank you for doing both the swimming AND speaking to someone on the radio who did the whole "you sound like someone who thinks all men are rapists" or whatever he said. I thought you did so well and I think the PL incident on the wrightstuff shows that even seasoned and trained "media people" are thrown off course in that scenario, as PL said she was shocked and didn't know how to respond when Anne Hegarty stated a simple fact and said everyone rushed to PL's assistance after, which makes you and Amy doing this without that kind of training and support even more impressive. I think Sarah Ditum is so valuable because of her experienced and highly effective way of dealing with the issue under pressure on tv/radio, but it is also so important to hear from everyday women and I really commend both you and Amy for doing this.

I am not in the UK at the moment but honestly would have phoned in otherwise (though I see Datun was rejected so doubt they'd have had interest in what I had to say anyway) but can honestly say I was itching to ring in and speak and in the past I would never have got as far as wanting to actually dial and go ahead with it - you are an inspiration because it made me realise I can and need to speak up.

MyOwnShed · 20/03/2018 20:50

Just in case anyone hadn't spotted it...

Lottapianos · 20/03/2018 19:07

'What a fucking misogynist.'

Yep. But he's the world's biggest feminist in his own mind Hmm Angry

SwearyG · 20/03/2018 18:30

If you download the app you can listen on catch up for nothing. The app is also free.

KatherinaMinola · 20/03/2018 18:20

Hannah, I heard you on the piece linked above by Cecily - you're amazing! You sound like a radio presenter, and that's useful in terms of credibility.

I can't find the original JOB interview except behind a paywall.

SwearyG · 20/03/2018 17:53

God finally listening to the rest of the show. What a fucking misogynist.

HelpTheTigers · 20/03/2018 15:23

I've just found this thread and (I think) that I'm glad that I didn't hear the James O'Brien interview. TBH, I'd never heard of him until now and he sounds seriously unpleasant and blatantly misogynistic.
Amy and Hannah are incredible and so inspirational. The least that we can do is to help to peak trans other people and to ask / encourage them to sign the petition. I just don't understand why there are so many people who are in agreement out there but apathetic about signing. I can only assume that they are trying to be politically correct and that the trans-lobby have managed to get in there first and spin their (verbal) bollocks. Their female bollocks, of course!

Elendon · 20/03/2018 14:58

Because JOB doesn't understand NAMALT.
