That Guardian article is really sad and deserves its own thread

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 17/03/2018 17:20

Yes, I do think that it sounds like PL had a terrible time as a gay teenager/young adult. Maybe transitioning helped them step away from those things, I don't know?

None of that means PL is a woman though. PL has a set of experiences as a gay man and then a transwoman that, as a woman, I will never understand. Which is partly why lumping transwomen in with women is kind of pointless.

NotTerfNorCis · 17/03/2018 17:02

I agree. From what he's said, he was active in the gay scene and well into its culture. But things happened that alienated him and made him consider alternatives.

Pratchet · 17/03/2018 16:59

I think it's true. Homophobia was his enemy, not feminists.

Mamaryllis · 17/03/2018 16:56

That article is quite sad. He’s just a gay bloke who likes stereotypically girly things. A lot of his early trauma comes from bog standard homophobia. It’s that that needs stamping out.

Pratchet · 17/03/2018 16:53

If Paris Lees was 16 at the time he was definitely an abused teenager. If he was a woman I would definitely class that as abuse and I don't think the fact that he is male makes any difference to that.

ArcheryAnnie · 17/03/2018 16:46

I mean confusion earlier with what crime was what - have just caught up on thread and it's moved on!

ArcheryAnnie · 17/03/2018 16:45

I think there may be a bit of confusion here with Paris Green, aka Peter Laing, who kicked a man to death over a bag of chips, and then got moved about women's prisons because he kept on having sex (whether consensual or not we don't know) with women prisoners.

BeyondDeadlySiren · 17/03/2018 16:34

The transcrime website has the conviction as pre 2000

Yeah that's confusing me, cause PL is younger than me, and the spice girls were big before I was an adult, yet PL was apparently 16 (so 2003?)..? Confused

mirialis · 17/03/2018 16:25

From the timeline of events in that interview provided by PL plus Brighton uni having PL down as having graduated in 2009, I think PL must be at least 32 but "identifying" as a younger model. Lots do, I guess.

When would that have been notterf?

transcendentphobic · 17/03/2018 15:48

Well I'd say PL is very good at controlling their own life narrative; I can only find fawning articles about how courageous and a voice for the oppressed they are, usually by PL her/himself.

‘Serves them right’ being exactly the sort of mindset that TRAs use to beat up women that dare to centre women in their feminism. Nice to know that nothing changes with transitioning.

PL may be lying about their age to further distance themself from past crimes? Obviously we can't fully find what we are looking for if we don't know their true age? That's my thought anyway...

OlennasWimple · 17/03/2018 15:05

Beyond - AFAIK PL has always used the surname Lees, as it's the name of his father - www.thetimes.co.uk/article/relative-values-i-was-once-mums-son-now-im-her-daughter-m5f9hsp722q

LaContessaDiPlump · 17/03/2018 14:40

Shall we create a stock tweet to direct at David Dimbleby ahead of the event? Something about self ID, the petition and the scale of women's concerns? I'd tweet and retweet without cease Grin

As yet unpublished, (and unwritten?) alas, as I feel sure he wouldn’t be able to gloss over a life event like that

OlennasWimple · 17/03/2018 14:26

Maybe it will all come out in PL's memoir?
