"If you’re a Mum and on mn that often to have time to engage with ‘feminist’ forums, you’re more likely to be a ‘stay at home mum’. These are bored middle-class women putting their privileged Uni-educated thoughts to oppressing a small, vulnerable, oppressed sector of society"

Nice bit of sexism going on there

Helen is still a trustee of Mermaids.

gussyfinknottle · 26/02/2018 08:31

I work. I'm poorly paid. Both I and mythical "middle class sahm " are entitled to our opinion even if it doesn't coincide with your or each other's. Dismiss at your peril.
I what I would say to such bullshit.

KochabRising · 26/02/2018 08:28

Ah yes, feminism, that movement well known for being all about being a stay at home housewife and living off your husband's income

Sahm, wohm. It doesn’t matter. We are all united by just being women. MN is a pretty diverse place, and feminism aims to serve all women regardless of financial status, employment status, class, colour, race or creed.
Away with your division tactics. This whole dabate should be uniting us.

Ereshkigal · 26/02/2018 08:08

Strewth. Who the bloody hell does their PR

That's Helen too I imagine!

hackmum · 26/02/2018 08:07

I don't think mimmymum is at Mermaids any more - a quick search suggests she's set up her own marketing consultancy.

Ereshkigal · 26/02/2018 08:07

Wait, wait, is that the sound of the Earth's core grinding to a halt leaving us vulnerable to the destabilising effect of solar radiation? Erm, no pet, that's the sound of bullshit.

This thread is gold Grin

holycheeseplant · 26/02/2018 07:58

In a "it's the thought that counts" way.

Though, according to the screen shot below, this woman has suggested someone hacks someone...

holycheeseplant · 26/02/2018 07:55

I'm not into these tweeters but surely the 'threats' about technology are tongue in cheek jokes because they think we are insane and think that loads of TRAs work in technology?

I do agree, but at the same time I've never come across a woman use that style of social media discussion. We never see it on mn, I don't see it in the feeds I follow on twitter who are women, Ive only ever seen it written by men, and potentially young girls on the TRA or MRA side. Ime and imo.

EmyRoo · 26/02/2018 07:22

NinjagoNinja in the early part of last century, feminism was in a large part about improving the conditions of women who were at home looking after children. For example, maternity care and provision, maternity allowances. Second wave feminism, ditto - if you think about provisions of refuges, child crèches and campaigns to recognise the unpaid labour women do, campaigns against DV, those came out of the need to protect the position of women at home.

Feminism has always been about recognising, protecting and campaigning for women’s multiple needs, it has never been about being men, or emulating men. So if you are a SAHM, all power to you, feminism exists because of and for you too.

RowenaDedalus · 26/02/2018 06:23

I'm not into these tweeters but surely the 'threats' about technology are tongue in cheek jokes because they think we are insane and think that loads of TRAs work in technology? So they're feeding that perception as they think that we are paranoid? Is no one else reading that comment in this way? It was a weird thing to say but I don't think it means that person is actually wanting to do anything, more like mocking us for our 'paranoia'

thebewilderness · 26/02/2018 03:27

Worse than Jazz Jennings parents who only exploit Jazz, as though that were not bad enough. These people at Mermaids are inexcusable.

@BetsyM00

Yep I saw the back and forth between her and MY on Twitter.

It takes about 10 seconds to find out who she is (including pictures of her and children) on google.

For someone having such outrage at her child's identity being public she's done a pretty poor job of protecting that on the internet.

Upshot she's probably unwittingly referenced her various online "handles" by posting across forums so it's easy to go from twitter to another popular online site (I'm deliberately not naming it) and from there to all her current work, personal online details, full bio, where she lives etc etc.

NinjagoNinja · 26/02/2018 00:24

I'd just like to say a cheery fuck you to the person who posted this on the first page of this thread.

Flomper · 26/02/2018 00:22

Why does it mean that and not 20? And what is the relevance of some shit disaster movie?

thebewilderness · 26/02/2018 00:21

I am always struck by how freely people express their contempt for women.
They must know it says more about them than it does about the women who talk on MN.

BetsyM00 · 26/02/2018 00:21

Datun She certainly was the Marketing Officer. This tweet is from 03 July 2017.

There's always been a bit of back-and-forth with Lily Maynard, and very recently with Miranda Yardley - who, I believe, posted a photo that included Helen's child, with accusations of doxing despite the photo being put on the internet by Helen in the first place.

I'm sure I previously saw Helen's name on the staff list on Mermaid's website but it's no longer there. Googling is not helping me much. So, I'm pretty sure she's still the MO, but I can't verify it.

If you google 'helen @mimmymum mashable' the top hit will give you her surname (She's accused people of doxing her for knowing her publicly available surname!) - maybe you can find out more info.

Tanith · 26/02/2018 00:17

Oopsy! Missed a zero!

Tanith · 26/02/2018 00:16

I, too, have been on the internet for over 30 years. I know the real significance of one zero one zero zero.

It means... 💣🔥

Terfinater · 26/02/2018 00:13

Fucking sexist arsehole. That poor kid.

Flomper · 26/02/2018 00:12

Do these people really think that there are no wonen in technology?

I work in devops too Theresa, despite being a woman, you didn't invent ARM chips and there are lots of women, now, doing IT and STEM, as well as any men or trans women.

Desperatelyseekingsun · 25/02/2018 23:59

I too am sure than people who identify as all sexes and none do good and useful things. This has nothing to do with my issues with self id or my fundamental belief that you cannot actually change sex through power of will and medication.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 25/02/2018 23:22

I really don't give any kind of fuck who invented the chip in my phone. It's a pretty shit phone anyway but that's beside the point. I'm not now casting it down shouting 'Outwitted once again by the mighty TIMs goddarnit!' I'm sure transpeople do all kinds of good useful shit. Not a problem at all and I can't imagine why it would be.

If that's ironic is it like 'Ironic' by Alanis Morrisette?

SimonBridges · 25/02/2018 23:19

We multitask like you breathe.

You know you are talking to women here right? We rule the world at multitasking.

SimonBridges · 25/02/2018 23:16

Once I’d joined the dots I realise that the chips in phones thing is about Sophie Wilson who is trans.
She, as Roger, was a key part of the team that went on to form ARM and invent the chips in damn near every mobile phone and tablet. ARM are a massive deal. Sadly that’s all gone to shit since Brexit.

Annoyingly I’ve seen Sophie cited as an example of women in STEM. Whilst I don’t deny for one moment that she is an excellent programmer and her inventions seriously changed the world as we know it she did so as a man with male privilege. Had she been Sophie then would she have even been taken seriously?

I have no problem with her as an individual and have a great deal of respect for her but I don’t think it is fair to use her as a poster girl for women in STEM or how trans people are taking over the world.
