Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My elderly parents peak transed today

I was having a lively debate with my parents (both in their 80s and incredibly with it and intelligent) and the subject of womens only safe spaces came up. I decided to tell them about the proposed issues involving TIMs.

And they peak transed.

So begins the spread of this information among their friends, and the ripples will spread.

I'm sure most trans ideology proponents including Charlotte, are perfectly nice and well-meaning people.

But the truth is that they are shilling a regressive ideology that reproduces every axis of oppression - not just sex, but also class and race - going and which results in middle/upper class, white males even more entrenched at the top of the power pyramid than they already are. All it does is let the ones who used to wear women's clothes in private wear them in public now too. It is not even a movement to liberate actually dysphoric people, let alone the rest of us.

I speak plainly. I have no interest in pussy footing around an ideology whose end point is a society in which the hyper-privileged play at body hacking via endo-tech and newfangled surgeries in a fruitless quest for authenticity while the rest of us labour at shit jobs in shit housing with a shit public safety net.

And if the evangelical among the pomos want to say that makes me a bigot - they're welcome to go ahead. I couldn't give a toss.

Has that quoted post by CoteDAzur been deleted, as I can't see her addressing someone called 'Olive' anywhere recently? I'd assumed Charlotte was at least having a grumble at something that had been said in the past week or so, not back in 2008.

StringOfGoldStars · 21/02/2018 15:38

Some say pansexual which is just another way of saying bisexual while others say it is pedophile. Given who is in charge of all LGB organizations these days I think the P is for predator.

Actually, pan sexuals are the luckiest of all in this whole sorry mess. It is similar to bisexual but they have no ossie with the 'gender presentation' and the biological sex not matching.

So quite happy with the lady dick and the male vagina.

Ergo, pretty much the only group who cannot be guilty of transphobia!

TerfyTheCuntingTerf · 21/02/2018 15:19

It takes a certain kind of mentality to imagine that women simply stop reading and lose all sense of reason when they hit middle-age.

Or the suggestions that older women/feminists should step aside, shut up and let the younger generation have their say, which was one viewpoint I saw being put forwards a while back.

Awful, because often it's only as women get older that the scales start to fall from their eyes (and they stop giving so many shits), so it's an immensely effective way of keeping women in their 'place'.

Datun · 21/02/2018 15:09

I've just done an advanced search for Charlotte's friend Olive Branch.

Contrary to what Charlotte says, Olive hasn't engaged on the feminist boards at all. And certainly not in the spirit that her name suggests, as Charlotte has said.

I am wondering whether Olive Branch is actually Charlotte's mum.

She has been posting on MN for years, with comments about her daughter, on an off. And seems a nice woman with all the normal concerns about children.

Perhaps she mentioned these discussions to Charlotte, who then decided to write up her own opinion. An opinion which seems, again, to be a knee-jerk reaction with nothing to back it up.

I wish Charlotte and Olive would come on here, after listening to some actual transpeople explaining why discussion is not transphobic.

I do find myself despairing of uninformed youngsters who criticise older women, on the basis absolutely nothing.

It takes a certain kind of mentality to imagine that women simply stop reading and lose all sense of reason when they hit middle-age.

Funnily enough, it seems to work the opposite way with men.

The "p" stands for "pansexual," the fun new sparkly pomo word for bisexual.

Of course! Thank you.

thebewilderness · 21/02/2018 14:57

In addition to not wanting predators in the changing rooms and loos as self ID provides for I must admit that I deeply resent the claim being made by some people that women should act as human shields for men who identify as women.

lunamoth581 · 21/02/2018 14:51

Problem is, women expressing any opinion on any topic in any tone are often called "angry" or "shrill" or "harsh." It's the "woman dares to speak her mind" part that people don't like, not the quality of her arguments.

Like Charlotte's blog. "You're old and you're mean" is the entirety of her argument. She doesn't actually formulate any kind of rebuttal.

It's pretty much the same old misogyny (internalized and externalized), different day.

I do get the point of not alienating lurkers and people who haven't really thought about the issues. That's a good thing. But I also think women are judged more harshly. And a lot of this is rage-inducing. And I'm also not criticizing anyone's posting style here. I find FWR regulars to be reasonable and well-informed.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 21/02/2018 14:49

Bless Charlotte, she seems very earnest. She has allowed comments too. I think she's at base camp at worst.

And like someone said when you think - 'would I mind my lovely gay bf Sam changing next to me?' it seems like a no brainer. Then you realise it's going to be that bald bloke who wanks into teenage girls' pants and the idea seems far less appealing...

thebewilderness · 21/02/2018 14:40

DodoPatrol · 21/02/2018 14:33

I think it might be pansexual, i.e. prepared to have a go with even the most gender-confused of their contemporaries.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 21/02/2018 14:31

I'm hoping it isn't peadophiliac.

Ereshkigal · 21/02/2018 14:21

lgbtqiap+

What does the P stand for?

Ereshkigal · 21/02/2018 14:18

From the comments on Charlotte's blogpost:

Also can I point out that literally everyone on the planet is ‘non binary’. It is a non-word.
Nobody confirms exactly to gender stereotypes.

Well said, TruScum

DodoPatrol · 21/02/2018 13:57

Urgh, serious overuse of 'nice' in that post. Charlotte's blandly sunny view of life must be catching.

(A slight smirk here at her shock that 'surely this isn't how parents are meant to behave'. Guess what, sweetheart, adults have views that they don't always blurt out in front of the children.)

DodoPatrol · 21/02/2018 13:52

I suspect young Charlotte is at the same stage, in her nice progressive girls' school, as my son when at sixth form: 'can't see why feminism is needed', given that women already have all the rights they need, and most men are nice, and the girls are the meanies if anything...

Total lack of actual life experience beyond their own safe bubble. And wouldn't it be nice if we knew that their current safe, egalitarian experiences would continue lifelong?

Apologies, I was not criticising you or your style of posting

Nor was I, btw, although I made some comments about people here being angry (and scared too). I meant that people should bear that in mind when reading.

I wonder if we could start to collate a thread of evidence, links to studies etc, so we've got it all in one place? Could be useful for people planning to write/meet with their MPs, which I fully intend to do after attending the Woman's Place meeting.

rowdywoman1 · 21/02/2018 13:38

There's that great phrase that nails it:
"explodes in a puff of feminist frustration"

Waydugo · 21/02/2018 13:38

Bit of food for thought here:
A friend works in the NHS carrying out procedures. From time to time they get prisoners in for this procedure. So she was asked to do this - no problem as they are always accompanied by guards.
Said prisoner turns up dressed as a woman handcuffed to both guards. Aggressively asks to be referred to with new name/persona. Again not a problem. Taken through for procedure which requires top half of clothing to be taken off except this person has decided to wear a body. He has to stay handcuffed to the prisoner guards given the danger he poses. So my friend is faced with having to reach round to undo his body. Guards intervene at this point and say she shouldn't do that but try to carry out procedure without having to remove the clothing which she could.
She googled his name after he'd gone and low and behold a long string of convictions for serious sex crimes. Luckily he's in a male prison at the moment but if certain people have their way then what way do you think that will go?

IfNot · 21/02/2018 13:36

Does anyone know why my post was deleted? Confused

Ereshkigal · 21/02/2018 13:34

I think sometimes it's so exasperating that it's hard to always be exemplary.

Ereshkigal · 21/02/2018 13:28

Sorry crap reception Blush

rowdywoman1 · 21/02/2018 13:28

Agreed - it's a process that you have to work through. People don't change when they're shouted at. They can be silenced but it won't change their opinions.
That's why the TG organisations put so much effort into schools - catch them while they're young, feed them false statistics about suicide, harmless drugs, eradicate scientific facts, establish the belief that a transgender woman is a real woman and that any opposition is hate speech and bingo! You've won over the younger generation.
It's only when the oxygen of publicity highlights what they are desperate to keep hidden, that the wheels start falling off. Self ID enabling sex offenders, autogynephiliacs demanding access to woman's spaces, TiMs demanding their rights to work as rape counsellors, nurses giving smear tests, bra fitters etc. Then the contradiction between people wanting to be kind versus wanting to be safe becomes apparent.
And that's when people start to get it.

Ereshkigal · 21/02/2018 13:28

But she's not posting. She's quoting my post as the post of a bigot. I'm sorry if I think her views are silly but I do. She didn't give me a right to reply.
