My elderly parents peak transed today

I was having a lively debate with my parents (both in their 80s and incredibly with it and intelligent) and the subject of womens only safe spaces came up. I decided to tell them about the proposed issues involving TIMs.

And they peak transed.

So begins the spread of this information among their friends, and the ripples will spread.

As absurd as it is to be expected to view any random male person as a woman/girl it's extra absurd when you've known them most of your life.

GinAndSonic · 20/02/2018 21:32

Phoenix I can totally accept that some TIMs want to be women. But, as evidenced by their wanting to be women, they aren't women. It is not hateful or bigoted to not want to undress in the presence of men.

Summerisdone · 20/02/2018 21:29

All you guys here on Mumsnet peaked transed myself. Previously I had been very much of the mind “what’s the issue? Why can’t we all accept people for who they are, even if that is a woman who was born male? Etc.”
After I read a couple posts on here I soon woke up to the problems that are arising for women. Now I speak to many people about it, and my mum and my teenage sisters have all taken a different stance on the issue too.

My sisters are in year 10 and are forced to share a changing room and toilet at school with a classmate that they’ve known as a boy since age 4, because he came back after last October half term and announced he’s actually now a girl. None of the uncomfortable girls can speak out without worry that all the other classmates and teachers will label them transphobic and prejudice or whatever Angry

AngryAttackKittens · 20/02/2018 21:29

Why can you not accept that some transwomen genuinely do want to be women and feel like a woman (sorry bad explanation)

Because we know that they're not the only people who the term "trans" is now applied to.

phoenixtherabbit · 20/02/2018 21:28

You won't see me on the "other side of the peak" because I'm not small minded and filled with hate.

Why can you not accept that some transwomen genuinely do want to be women and feel like a woman (sorry bad explanation)

Do you think all transwomen are pretending so they can perv on you in the changing rooms or rape you in topshop?

Don't you find that a bit unfair saying all x group must be y because some are.

TerfyMcTerface · 20/02/2018 21:27

This makes me uncomfortable because youre tarring all transwomen with the same brush. You're basically telling people they should be wary of trans women. Scared that they're going to be raped in a changing room.

Let's turn that on it's head. Because there is a small number of genuine (ie. properly transitioned) transwomen out there, we should therefore let anyone who flocks under the trans umbrella (ie. autogynephiles, cross-dressers, voyeurs and various other fetishists) into our changing rooms and hospital wards too? How many women are you prepared to see raped in order to be nice?

ExFunFeminist · 20/02/2018 21:27

@phoenixtherabbit

The majority do keep their male genitals, yes

Where are your stats for that?

‘’These figures indicate that about 1% of the UK population, some 650,000 people, are likely to be gender incongruent to some degree. So far, only about 30,000 have sought medical help for gender dysphoria. Dutch research indicates that around a fifth of the 650,000 will do so, amounting to a further 100,000 people.’’ Source here

If you wouldn't advocate letting men into a changing room, why would you advocate letting a man into a changing room who has filled out a couple of forms beforehand in order to claim that he is now legally a woman?

Confused

Do you understand why we have sex seggregated spaces?

fishdogpancakes · 20/02/2018 21:22

Upside Yes, the genuine transgender people are usually lovely gentle folk but this isn't about these, and many of them are very worried too.

The fear is in allowing Self ID to become law then anyone, and I mean anyone, can access all female only spaces from that date. They don't even have to pretend to be women do you see?

The rugby club drunken stag do in the ladies. That would be fun?

The disgruntled teen who's really cross with that girl who just turned him down, he can now follow her to continue the argument

The smelly old drunk who can't piss straight and does it all over the floor

These are the mild scenarios. No one is anti transgender, on the contrary but can you not see the dangers of allowing open access to all female spaces?

TheXXFactor · 20/02/2018 21:22

And no I wouldn't advocate letting men into changing rooms etc but a lot of women let them into their houses their lives etc

Stupid analogy. I don't let random men into my house. I choose who comes into it. I can't choose who enters a changing room or hospital ward with me.

And no I wouldn't advocate letting men into changing rooms etc Well, that is exactly what is being proposed by the changes to the GRA. In fact, men are already allowed into female changing rooms in Topshop & many other stores. So maybe you should inform yourself about what is going on, before dismissing the rest of us as bigots?

See you on the other side of the peak..

TerfyMcTerface · 20/02/2018 21:20

And no I wouldn't advocate letting men into changing rooms etc but a lot of women let them into their houses their lives etc.

You let any strange man that knocks on the door into your house on his say-so?

phoenixtherabbit · 20/02/2018 21:17

A lot of quoted statistics here. Where are we getting all this from?

And no I wouldn't advocate letting men into changing rooms etc but a lot of women let them into their houses their lives etc. Should we not, just incase they're a sex criminal?

This makes me uncomfortable because youre tarring all transwomen with the same brush. You're basically telling people they should be wary of trans women. Scared that they're going to be raped in a changing room.

OlennasWimple · 20/02/2018 21:15

The vast majority of real Transgender people are not sex offenders and shouldnt be blamed for the actions of others

I agree (and I suspect most of the pp on here do too)

But how do we distinguish? And why should we completely get rid of a process which is not perfect but does try to at least make some distinction between the genuine trans and the fetishists? I'd be right behind lobbying to ensure that there is proper mental health support in all parts of the country and gender referral clinics were properly resourced so that patients didn't have to wait inordinate lengths of time for their initial appointment. But that's not what TRAs are asking for. They want to get rid of the process - and support - altogether.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 20/02/2018 21:14

My DH was peaked by me pointing out that DD's water polo has large single sex changing rooms - no cubicles. He wouldnt even open the door to shout for her!

I need to speak to my DM & let her peak all the ' women ladies who lunch' Grin

OlennasWimple · 20/02/2018 21:12

Yeah, my DH peaked with sport too.

upsideup · 20/02/2018 21:11

Prior to peak: Transgender people are fine. What's the problem?
After peak: What. The. Fuck.

But transgender people are actually fine. People who are truly transgender are fine. This whole 'peak trans' thing is nasty and is creating mockery and hatred towards innocent trans people.
Its not actual trans people who are the problem, they need to be protected from the few sick individuals who will lie about being trans in order to abuse women not blamed.
In my eyes it really is not different to saying I am 'peak muslim' over a few terrorists claiming to be muslim. The vast majority of R
real Muslims are innocent and not terrorits and they shoudlnt be blamed for others actions. The vast majority of real Transgender people are not sex offenders and shouldnt be blamed for the actions of others.

BiologyMatters · 20/02/2018 21:00

I peaked my husband by telling him about the issues with men competing in women's Sport

littlebillie · 20/02/2018 21:00

I was just explaining the self ID to my teen ds, I have not made any suggestions.

His first thought was that rape/assault would increase as men would be accessing vulnerable women. This is a child's opinion and he gets there is a massive problem. Why aren't the adults?

Patodp · 20/02/2018 20:58

I'd be overjoyed to make it to 80 and be called elderly. Probably won't happen because of my health.

Patodp · 20/02/2018 20:57

Kittens
I only just spotted the word "people" there myself despite replying to that exact sentence twice Shock

It really is ALL about one type of trans isn't it. The born male type.

Fish that is a huge achievement. Labour activists are the worst.

I agree that women should have rights obviously but trans people are women and for the most part genuinely feel that way

In what sense are they women? A woman is an adult female. That's what the word woman means. Transwomen are a subset of men.

MyBeloved · 20/02/2018 20:50

Good for you fishdogpancakes

phoenix - do you think that this man is actually Filipino? After all, he feels deep down that he is Filipino (despite being a white man from Florida)
