I’ve learned that there are some brilliant, learned and compassionate people out there, who come at this from all angles. One (purely anecdotal) observation is that the diversity of opinions within the trans-gender population is not remotely reflected in the bit of this conversation most visible at Westminster. The trans community’s opinions are not as homogenous as some reporting and discussion suggest. So here’s a tip for hacks covering this: don’t just book Paris Lees or talk about Lilly Madigan. Ask Kristina Harrison what she thinks. Or Tara Hewitt. Or lots of other people. The same goes for the ‘radical’ feminist side of this: there’s more to it than Germaine Greer. (Though for some media outlets that really should know better, having any voice from that side of the conversation at all would be an improvement.)

i'm not my mum's generation - i did always think he was a dim misogynistic prick and nothing that's happened in the last 2 years has proven me wrong, I wish it gave me more of a kick, being right about him. I just want him off of the labour leadership...

Valentinesfart · 12/02/2018 16:32

What has he offered us anyway? Besides lady zone carriages on the train Hmm That would be full of self identified penis.

Valentinesfart · 12/02/2018 16:31

Corbyn was schooled on MN at the very least. Even if he really did believe that it would show a willful ignorance to listen to women, so fuck em really.

Valentinesfart · 12/02/2018 16:30

The Spectator website isn't working for me at all. Hmm On Chrome or Explorer

Gacapa · 12/02/2018 16:30

Corbyn may very well be labouring under and illusion of "old school transsexuals". But if he is then he's stupid and lazy. (I think he's both those things anyway.) If he doesn't think that and he's up to speed, then he's a fucking disgrace and I don't know how any woman could vote for the party he leads.

Either way, not good enough. I despise the man. And I voted for him to be leader. I'll always deeply regret that. I should have listened to my mother's generation. They could see right through him as a dim misogynistic prick.

Valentinesfart · 12/02/2018 16:27

Dear Leader understands the issues. Dear Leader is not a child. Dear Leader has made a political calculation that Labour needs the youth vote and the student activism more than it needs women.

If he want someone to show up to a protest hung over fair enough. If he wants someone to vote that's another story.

TheRagingGirl · 12/02/2018 16:19

If you think that the eradication of women as a biological category is a miniscule problem, then there is no arguing with you. Seriously, have you read anything about this at all?

I think it's even more fundamental than this

I think it's a problem where men are [once again] telling women who & what they are. They see the category of "woman" not as a fully human half of the human race. They don't regard women as fully human. They regard the category of "Woman" as an empty space which they can control and define.

It's worse than erasure: it's an indication that some MRAs (hiding as TRAs) don't see us as existing at all.

lovetheway · 12/02/2018 16:18

Changing your legal gender, destroying previous records - why, it's like a sex offender's wish list Angry

Pepvixen · 12/02/2018 16:11

Tara Hewitt is a trans identified male 'equality trainer', is anti choice and anti lesbians accessing fertility treatments.

busyboysmum · 12/02/2018 16:06

I was just quoting the article Bela. I've no idea who Tara Hewitt is.

Pepvixen · 12/02/2018 15:59

Yes, the Tara Hewitt bit jarred. Hewitt is possibly more of a misogynist than Lees.

BelaLugosisShed · 12/02/2018 15:40

[busyboysmum] Listen to Tara fucking Hewitt ? Are you having a laugh?

Bloomed · 12/02/2018 15:22

everyone winefred thank you. What a ridiculous situation

Everyonematters · 12/02/2018 15:16

Totally understand need to be cautious Winefred, sorry for asking.

Winefred · 12/02/2018 15:14

Everyonematters - "Winefred seriously? Concerns about the catch all 'transphobia'? Or specifically about women's rights?"

He used the word "equality". The context makes clear what it is about. [Sorry can't be more specific - I don't want to be outed].

nauticant · 12/02/2018 15:09

Why no law-people fighting this?

Threat of disciplinary action by their professional body if there is evidence of 'transphobia'. Who of us would risk that?

A high profile QC donated to the GoFundMe to challenge self-IDing transwomen on all-women shortlists and as soon as he realised this might see him get labelled as "transphobic", on went the hair shirt and out came the request for forgiveness.

Professional people in many domains see the transgender issue as a reef on which their careers could founder.

MistressDeeCee · 12/02/2018 15:01

I'm still bewildered that Labour have got this so spectacularly wrong. I've voted Labour since I was 18. I am 54 now. I will never, ever vote Labour again.

Everyonematters · 12/02/2018 15:00

AnotherCassandra · 12/02/2018 14:57

Interestingly no Transman priests Hmm the men also block Transmen inheriting in certain circumstances.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 12/02/2018 14:52

Myunicorn that line is saying that a priest or equivalent cannot refuse to marry a transgender couple, not force someone into a marriage with a transgender individual.

Myunicornfliessideways · 12/02/2018 14:46

Updating your gender to no longer be considered (.....) grounds for a celebrant to refuse to marry someone

Fucking. Hell.

What are they suggesting here? How the fucking hell does this nut propose to force someone to marry against their will and think this is anything less than medieval? This is a demand for state enforced abuse of women. Utterly derranged.

There has actually been a post on Twitter this week by the head of my professional body urging people to report concerns about members in relation to this.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 12/02/2018 14:36

Loving your work James.

And that of mumsnet obv WinkHaloGin

Everyonematters · 12/02/2018 14:36

Everyonematters · 12/02/2018 14:33

Have any lawyers/law professors spoken about self identification and the issues that can arise? Surely they must have been consulted?

I think this is part of the problem Bloom.

There are organisations dedicated to legal support (and other active lobbying) for trans people and advancing their rights. Quite fairly, that's their concern.

But there is no one actively doing this for biological women where trans interests may differ from theirs. And when women's orgs, including women's rights orgs, are told they have to be trans inclusive - both to gain funding and to avoid being called 'transphobic' - they aren't able to freely represent the rights of biological women.

So for example have a look at this video arguing for sports rights and fair play. No idea if it's accurate but it does make me wonder who is arguing for fair play for biological women at Olympic level?

Like any sex based difference imbalance of legal representation can only be observed if it remains visible in law. How will it do so with self-ID?
