So DD's organ donor card just arrived...

...and she waved it at me, so I said "Right you're supposed to have a chat about your wishes with your family." She, continuing to waggle it, says "This is me telling you about my wishes". So I said "Okay, but have you thought about your womb and the trans thing?"

Turns out she doesn't want a man using her womb after her death.

So that's fine, but it made me think; should we all be stipulating this in writing to the organ donor organisation?

But, as we know, wombs are not able to be transplanted at the moment, so the debate is a bit pointless.

Maybe (potentially) slightly less theoretical to young women in their teens, as DD is?

I think we're all allowed to think about the moral implications of medical research, and in my opinion, the risks of womb transplants into women, let alone men, are too high for me to feel comfortable with the research happening.

This is experimentation on fetuses and babies, and unless the human race is dying out, it's not a life-threatening situation for the would-be womb recipient, so I couldn't justify risking the potential life they intend to grow in it by supporting it.

YogaDrone · 10/02/2018 15:27

I have carried the "and any other parts of my body" card for 20 years.

Those crying transphobia appear to be overlooking that fact that a womb is of no use to a male. It would simply be wasting a viable organ. The womb should go to a female who might actually be able to put it to the use it is intended. That's science, not bigotry.

But, as we know, wombs are not able to be transplanted at the moment, so the debate is a bit pointless.

Battleax · 10/02/2018 15:27

feel sorry for all the genuine transwomen who really are just people who were unfortunate enough to be born in a body they dont feel is right. I understand that some men are using this to their advantage and that is frankly disgraceful but i do honestly believe some people genuinely do feel like this and simply just want to be the person they feel they are.

Well of course they do. I genuinely feel able bodied, but I'm not. I think we all need to me encouraged to make the best of things, do what's possible, not hanker too much after the impossible and generally all keep our feet on the ground.

It isn't the majority of transpeople who are pushing the extreme trans agenda. The majority just want to live in safety and get on with things.

I think if you're at the point of havinh a womb transplant (if it ever happens) then you're clearly pretty serious about wanting to be or live as a woman. I wouldn't mind my womb going to someone like that. I imagine it's incredibly painful to live in what you feel is the wrong body

Absolutely. I don't support people being able to self identify and then use women's facilities. But I'm happy enough that the amount of work needed to be at the point of womb transplants would weed out the chancers and abusers.

The absolutely tiny chance of my womb going to an mtf person doesn't keep me awake at night. I don't see it being feasible and it seems a petty reason to not donate organs.

There was another thread today about why people don’t call themselves feminists. This thread is completely why I don’t.

Jeez.

mustbemad17 · 10/02/2018 15:25

Donate, sorry. Not receive 🙄

5Blue thank you, i was under the impression that JW couldn't receive organs.

Battleax · 10/02/2018 15:23

Oh go away Silicon.

Shall I just announce that your "agenda" is Nazism? Don't be so bloody daft.

Could FTM transgender people donate their wombs to MTF transgender people who want them? Kind of like swapsies except a penis transplant is never going to happen is it.

I’m more concerned about MTF trans people in women’s sport, and the threat to certain women-only spaces, than the absolutely tiny (and probably non existent) chance of my uterus being donated to a MTF person after my death.

SiliconHeaven · 10/02/2018 15:22

I think the OPs agenda is pure anti-transgender hatred. It sickens me

Eminybob · 10/02/2018 15:22

I have reached peak trans but even I think the op is nuts.
There is no such thing, and unlikely to ever be such a thing as a womb transplant to a biological male.
And to the poster who said if this is possible then she will take herself off the register altogether rather than donate her womb to a transwoman - seriously? That to me is hate and transphobia.
No wonder we are starting to get a bad name.
Not wanting trans women in rape crisis centres is one thing, opting out of organ donation in case a transwoman gets your womb, that’s entirely another level.

Battleax · 10/02/2018 15:21

The list that bringonspring posted says 'tissue and bone donation' - a uterus is tissue. I would guess this statement has replaced 'any other tissue', it would appear to have the same meaning.

You might well be right.

sorry, Although this is may be possible,

None of the major religions have a problem with organ donation. In case of Jehovah Witnesses there are rules for organ recipients to do with receiving blood products but it is manageable.

CaledonianQueen · 10/02/2018 15:21

The government/ medical world have deemed my blood and organs unsuitable to share with others due to a health condition. However, should say 'Jas' or another young transgender person, wish to have a womb transplant, via organ donation I would be delighted to think I had helped them experience pregnancy/ childbirth.

However, this is the stuff of science fiction! As far as I am aware there has been only a handful of womb transplants to date, like in this link and those were successful because the women already had ovaries.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-29485996

A young woman was able to carry her child, experiencing pregnancy and now has a beautiful baby. To me, that is a wonderful gift to give to a woman who for whatever reason (birth defect/ cancer etc) was unable to carry and give life to her own child.

I honestly hope that bigotry towards transgender people does not prevent people from donating their organs. There are so many very sick children and adults out there, dying, whilst waiting for a transplant.

Enwi · 10/02/2018 15:20

I'm happy for my womb to go to a trans woman/ man.

Same as I'm happy for my liver, kidneys, heart to go to anyone who wants/needs it. Imagine if we got to choose.

All the world's nasty little prejudices driving healthcare. Yuck.

——
Absolutely. Everyone has different opinions. Where do we draw the line? When people don’t want their heart to go to a lesbian, or don’t want a person of another colour to have their lungs? You either donate, or you don’t.

Battleax · 10/02/2018 15:20

You get to choose which organs to donate. Once you have made that choice you have no input in where they go

Exactly.

So regretfuly Im putting my reproductive organs off limits to donation as I have disquiet about them potentially being used in male bodies not designed to support them.

@Iworrytoomuchh "My sister was born without a womb, she can never have kids."

I am so sorry about this.

"She’s only young and holds hope that in the future she’ll be able to get a transplant and carry kids"

Although this is possible, I would say she would be better to think about alternative ways to become a mum. Such as surrogacy or adoption. We adopted our son after years of treatment trying to have a second child. I understand she is very young now but if in the future she finds this an option, the boards for adoption here are very good.

Thanks

Men cannot support a pregnancy. If you think you can reduce gestation down to bunging an organ in a man, its because you dont understand gestation.

A womans body reads the fetus and responds to it. Male bodies body can't.
Support a fetish all you like, but the second you start to involve children, society has the responsibility to say no.

Enidthecat · 10/02/2018 15:19

I dont think that "Half arsed" transgender people will get to the stage of womb transplants. Surely there wpild be serious physiological testing (wrong word!) Before a serious procedure like that? Just like they dont cut off penises left right and centre.

Lovesagin · 10/02/2018 15:18

Ill be honest, if it's all or nothing (womb to a TIM or no organ donation at all) I'd choose to donate nothing, and hope so many others do it throws light on the whole subject.
