Was Greer Right When She Said Men Hate Women?

I have just skim read The Female Eunuch and like everyone else, the stand out line to me was that men hate us but we aren't aware of the extent, and neither are they!!

Do you think this is true?? My DH, my late father and my brother, all immensely like/d and love/d the women in their lives. I hate to think it is true, but if it is, I want to know! I want to know my enemy.

Ray is engaging in several levels of whataboutery - certainly allowed on here - but will be answered and challenged.

I can't stop him doing the whataboutery - but I can point it out.

Men are not sent to war because they are "hated". Men are glorified and decorated in war.

CoolCarrie · 10/02/2018 22:40

Erin Prizzey was the woman who opened the first shelter for “battered” women as it was called then.

QuentinSummers · 10/02/2018 22:38

What evidence is there that Germaine was wrong?

CoolCarrie · 10/02/2018 22:38

Ray is clearly attempting to state his point of view here, is that not allowed, on this open forum? I thought that getting input from other people was the whole idea of MN, clearly I was wrong, it seems...

QuentinSummers · 10/02/2018 22:37

I think often in wars, especially in countries without national service, (some) men are happy to sign up.
I am quite fed up with discussing a few examples where men can be percieved to be worse off (war, crab fishing, working in warehouses) in the face of widespread persecution of women.
Seriously. Grow some empathy.

RaySwan · 10/02/2018 22:37

Jesus that’s exactly my point. Men are indifferent to men and by extension women. Hence why they are quite happy to send them to die.

Who is Erin Prizzey and I don’t know, you tell me?

Terftastic · 10/02/2018 22:34

Ray - do you believe a radical feminist killed Erin Pizzey's dog?

Terftastic · 10/02/2018 22:33

Oh - RaySwan is one of our mens rights activists. You can always tell from the type of arguments they bring on. So, we're at "war" first are we.

Ok Ray - men send other men to war for the continuation of their power, to win, and to either defence their own power, or gain more power. Not because they hate men as a class.

In general - men don't get harsher prison sentences for the same crimes.

CoolCarrie · 10/02/2018 22:30

It’s such a sweeping statement to make about men. Those men were children once, how did they suddenly,or slowly come to hate us? Of course men don’t hate women, although I agree with the statement “Men are worry that women will laugh at them, women worry that men will kill them” Greer can write some crap at times.

RaySwan · 10/02/2018 22:29

Women*

RaySwan · 10/02/2018 22:29

Quentin

So explain how men have sent other men to die in wars in their millions. Explain why men get far harsher prison sentences than men for the same crimes. Men don’t really give a damn about other men, what they do care about is being demonised and the hypocrisy.

RaySwan · 10/02/2018 22:22

Thebewilderness

So Germaine Greer proports to know what all men think about women and I a man state that this is BS and you accuse me of mansplaining.

Haha the fucking irony.

Terftastic · 10/02/2018 22:15

I think a lot of men are the same as they 100 odd years ago - when women wanting the vote were told their interests were looked after by their husbands and fathers. They love the women in their lives - they love and care for their mothers, wives, sisters. They are protective of their daughters.

But as for the cause of women's equality in general - not so much. I've come across so many men who are insulted if a woman either disagrees with them, or rebuffs them. The you see what they're really like.

Then, as now, if a woman steps out of line, she is punished, vilified, hated.

QuentinSummers · 10/02/2018 21:59

while you may not actively hate women, are indifferent to our pain and our anger.
Yes exactly. And ray men arent indifferent to other men. If they were there wouldn't be so much outrage about "false accusations" when a rape charge gets dropped. There would just be a shrug of the shoulders.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 10/02/2018 21:59

How dare you belittle anything that doesn’t conform to you

What the fuck are you on about?

thebewilderness · 10/02/2018 21:56

Nice men never show up where women are discussing male violence and mansplain NAMALT to them. Nor nice women, neither.

overnightangel · 10/02/2018 21:46

Can I just say, hating men doesn’t make you a feminist

overnightangel · 10/02/2018 21:44

Just another thread where if someone says a bloke is a nice man it’s twisted in a feminist agenda.
Sometimes a nice man is just a nice man, and he treats you an equal, you ya e a good laugh, a few fun nights out together, and you have fun together.
But unfortunately there are are always utter mentalists who feel the need to put a spin on things .

overnightangel · 10/02/2018 21:39

@TellsEveryoneRealFacts
“I love being a victim it defines me”
How dare you belittle anything that doesn’t conform to you

RaySwan · 10/02/2018 21:23

Lettuce your opinion of me doesn’t even get on my radar.

Notreadytomove.

No I was giving you a male perspective not your perspective or mine.

Thebewilderness

I agree with you if you’d read my earlier posts. I said men don’t hate women, they are just indifferent to women AND other men.

HairyBallTheorem · 10/02/2018 20:52

Not all, but too fucking many of them - see the thread I started on Oxfam and the exploitation of prostituted teenagers as young as 14, which also reminded me of the abuses carried out by UN peacekeepers. If even the "good guys" behave this way...

As ever NAMALT - my lovely dad and lovely son are downstairs - but far far too many.

SusanBunch · 10/02/2018 20:31

I agree with Germaine Greer. Lots of men love women they are related to, women they are going out with or are married to. But I have seen so many of them direct hatred against women who don't form part of their 'inner circle' and who don't know their place or get too big for their boots. These are men with wives, sisters, daughters, who would never in a million years describe themselves as misogynists. Yet part of their intense dislike for their 'bolshy' female boss is precisely the fact that she is a woman and they hate being told what to do by a woman.

NotReadyToMove · 10/02/2018 20:05

Ray can you see how it has turned into a ‘me, even though I am a man, will tell you, women, how things are and that how you are feeling, your experience I feel the situation is worng’

The start of equality and respect comes from listening to the other Jarry so telling they are wrong to feel a certain way.
You wouldn’t dare telling a back person that they feel they are not adequately protected (and they are not) even though the ,way shouod protect them.
So why is it ok to say to women that the law is there to protect them and that’s enough? Even if it’s not perfect, it will have to do?
Is it because you feel indifferent to the issue because actually it will never affect YOU as a Larson because you are a man??

OlennasWimple · 10/02/2018 19:59

The biggest example of men (as a class) showing their hatred / disdain for women (as a class) is in the reporting of and reaction to cases. involving celebrity men.

Think of Ched Evens, think of Stan Collymore, Gazza, Mike Tyson.... The list goes on and on and on.

Men who do terrible things to women get a "pass" because they are talented in other ways, particularly sports. As if this means that their victim is any less hurt, any less traumatised by what has been done to her.

But men excuse it ("she just wanted to be a WAG!", "he's too good to miss the World Cup!", "he can still talk sense about England's midfield crisis!"). They don't unequivocally condemn it. They might even further denigrate the victim ("She was too ugly to get sex any other way, he had to be off his head to sleep with her!"), aligning themselves with the perpetrator.

NAMALT obviously. Hmm

thebewilderness · 10/02/2018 19:51

That is exactly what I expected of you, Ray. You are one of the vast majority of men who, while you may not actively hate women, are indifferent to our pain and our anger.
