...please could I ask exactly what was your lightbulb moment? What did you hear or read that pushed you to our alpine slopes?

Pansies, pansies for everyone! Flowers

DodoPatrol · 15/02/2018 12:05

Pansies, BlindAssassin? Are we being flower-exclusionary now?

(great book, by the way.)

The car-crash that is the Labour Party and the complete lack of concern that swathes of women will have no one to vote for.

The cotton ceiling and the violent erasure and side-lining of lesbians and lesbian spaces.

The turning away from biological fact and bat shit linguistic redefinitions. Its like we're actually in 1984, yes is no and no is yes. Women can have pansies, cis as a sub category of 'woman' ..... and if you question it you're a bigot and you need re-educating. See Michael Rossen on Word of Mouth (bbc r4) the other day. Not once did he, who is so normally logical and insightful, question critically the patronising lecture being dished out. He just stumbled around the issue like a dinosaur.

The rise of handmaidens in more places. Like an FB enviro group I'm in demanding we use gender neutral language even when talking about periods and moon cups. There is such desperation to be right-on with this, trans is the current darling topic but if you're going to throw yourself under the bus like a fucking martyr, you're not taking me with you.

I ignorantly thought that feminism was winning and fell out the loop of things for years. Literally the last few weeks and days I've switched it up from waffty liberal feminism to Rad Fem thinking. Battle lines have been redrawn.

WiggyPig · 15/02/2018 09:15

MrGHardy my money is on the Sun misreporting it, not the judge failing to know the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity.

The decision there was quite right (I'm assuming it was an employment tribunal). Of course a huge company is obliged to protect its employees from discrimination, harassment or victimisation on the basis of protected characteristics, including gender reassignment.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 14/02/2018 21:53

But so much of this new wave of transgenderism when male born really have no intent of any meaningful transition seems to be so rooted in pornography and opportunism bewilderness.
I think you'd have to be very naive to think that some men wouldn't use Self ID to take advantage of women only spaces.

thebewilderness · 14/02/2018 21:48

Because this won't happen in the UK.
If self ID is codified into law then it can't happen in the UK because it will be a self identified woman wanking in the loo while watching a girl and far as I know that is not illegal in the UK, is it?

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 14/02/2018 21:40

I feel it was less of a peak and more of a mountain range Gin

I think the abuse that Jenni Murray and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie received for stating basic facts started it for me. Before that I've read the trans threads here on Feminist Chat and think God are they bangging on about this again? But that made me see thinngs differently. Around the same time I was watching The Big Questions one lazy Sunday morning of all things and the discussion was 'do we have the right to choose our own gender' which crystalised things for me.
Since then, I've joined Twitter and everytime I think I've seen it all I see something even more ludicrous.
Munroe Bergdorf telling us not to talk about biology
Morgane Oder using political status to start a witch hunt against feminists
India Willougby being a typical male chauvenist pig
Lily Madigan where to start!
BAME women being a 'type' of woman and the outstanding racism
Lesbians being bigot and the general homophobia
It's all so obviously MRA with lipstick

OvaHere · 14/02/2018 19:30

Welcome purple there is a lot to take in at the beginning so do ask questions. Wine or Gin is also useful!

I've just remembered one of my earliest peak trans (how little did I realise what was to come). It was the Michigan Womyns Fest (MichFest) being shut down due to pressure from TRAs. They had some issues for a few years and eventually the organisers shut it down rather than be consumed by TRAs.

I think this was 5 or 6 years ago now and it really started some alarms ringing about what was happening.

purple12 · 14/02/2018 19:11

I don't think I had a 'lightbulb' moment but a very good friend of mine who is very involved politically as a strong feminist and who I respect enormously raised some issues with me that I hadn't really thought of particularly. Then, I began paying a bit more attention to some of the conversations on Twitter and realising that I felt increasingly uncomfortable and I'm very glad to have found this board too. I feel like I'm just at the 'beginning' stage..

Due to her sexual identity. What the fuck is going on with the world. A judge that doesn't understand the difference between sex and gender.

The world is mad.

There seem to be conflicting accounts Fekko

I'm a tad confused

KittiesInsane that story is insane. How much power does this lobby have that college kids are scared to speak up about it, even at home? And how did it come about, maybe my uni was too a-political (which might be ironic given it's name and history, but I mean I just felt students were more interested in career, study, and fun than political agendas), but even so, I only left in 2011...

Because this won't happen in the UK. Oh no of course not...

Fekko · 14/02/2018 18:45

Did he/she/I’m condused now. I thought Bruce had the chop? Woman of the year?

FAD...

Agerbilatemycardigan · 14/02/2018 18:42

And keep his dick Fekko

Fekko · 14/02/2018 18:32

Well, Brucie changed in front of the full glare of the media. He didn’t do a sneaky change and pretend he’d been a woman all along.

I do love the way she decided that she still wanted the male privileges of the gold club though.

lovetheway · 14/02/2018 18:28

Rachel Dolezal. Remember all the hatred and mockery and opprobrium directed towards her?

Then I came on here and someone said 'How she different to Bruce Jenner?'. And I was like shit! Because I knew I could never go back.
(The answer is, of course to paraphrase Nora Ephron- when men do things it is brave and daring, whereas women are seen as mad and desperate)

AgentCooper · 14/02/2018 18:25

Not wishing to get too emotional here but when I was pregnant with DS last year and had to go to the Early Pregnancy Unit with quite heavy bleeding I read something about the erasure of the terms 'expectant mother' and 'pregnant woman' and I found it so upsetting.

DS is currently asleep on me and is absolutely fine, but that day I just felt like screaming 'don't take the word mother away from me because I am this baby's mother, even if he doesn't make it. And don't pretend that a man could experience this in the same way.'

MrGHardy · 14/02/2018 18:11

"Yes, why don't they go ahead and name some of the numerous murdered trans women? I have read about a few trans murderERS but not so many that have been murdered (in the UK at least)."

I did some research last. Not accurate, just some statistics I found on various websites:

In the US, trans women are 4.3 times as likely to be murdered as women. Prostitutes are 60-100 times more as likely (harder to estimate due to data hence the range). But ca 12% of trans people say they are or have worked in the sex industry, ca. 10 times as much as women (1-2%).

Accounting for the fact that trans are disproportionately working in the sex industry, they are actually murdered at a lower rate than women. Additionally, almost 90% of all trans murdered in the US in 2015 or 2016 I don't remember, were black. No one seems to mention that.

Finally, it's not gender critical feminists that murder trans people. It's violent men. And the former know all about the latter, trans should listen to the former.

TruScum · 14/02/2018 18:09

I 'peaked' a long time ago.

I've been doing my bit to 'peak' as many people as I can.

However I do have an advantage as I am a transsexual, so 'normal' people don't tend to scream transphobe at me.

I have definitely noticed that my tweets do not attract the same level of rage as women's do. Though I am often blocked after an obligatory 'truscum' is thrown my way.

SusanBunch · 14/02/2018 17:55

Yes, why don't they go ahead and name some of the numerous murdered trans women? I have read about a few trans murderERS but not so many that have been murdered (in the UK at least).

Terfragette · 14/02/2018 17:49

and again

TransPrivilege is having a 'Day of Remembrance' to honour non-existent transgender murder victims in a town with literally thousands of female victims of sexual violence, whose rapists were protected by officials more concerned about racial harmony.

SusanBunch · 14/02/2018 17:48

Terfagette oh my GOD. I am speechless. What a sick vile creature and that poor brave man for speaking up. When are people going to stop feting murderers and pedophiles as some sort of heroes? I remember when Jenny Swift committed suicide and Twitter was full of 'RIP u brave beautiful soul'. Never mind that Jenny had murdered someone in cold blood.

I now hope that Ian Huntley goes ahead full steam with his alleged transition because it needs something radical to get everyone to change their minds.
