...please could I ask exactly what was your lightbulb moment? What did you hear or read that pushed you to our alpine slopes?

Well probably mumsnet. But actually, I'm pleased to say, my 18 year old ds.He's been banging on about it quite quietly for ages. He's a man by the way. Always has been.

But it seems to fit in with the world today. It's all a bit fucked, isn't it? Trump and Brexit and Corbyn being hailed as God. Ideological cultish madness. I thought that was supposed to be the domain of Isis and North Korea? It's seems to be every where. But heavily laced with no freedom of speech and violence SadAngry

I think like so many others it was MN that did it for me. The Spartacus threads (18 months ago?) were probably my turning point, after some months of unease about the issue. I'm most bothered about how this is affecting children and teenagers. 4th Wave Now and Lily Maynard have taught me a lot. Until very recently I wouldn't even have used the word feminist about myself either! I was born in the 60s and grew up through the 70s naively thinking most of the battles were on their way to being won. Oh dear.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 07/02/2018 21:21

I think I peaktransed in about 1985 looking at drag queens and thinking 'but that's not what women are like'

But it's more of a Himalayan ridge than a peak innit? I feel positively cosy about old style transvestites now...

Weebo · 07/02/2018 21:11

I have recently fallen utterly and unabashedly in love with Magdalen Berns. :o

MaureenNervosa · 07/02/2018 21:08

‘And hasn’t bothered to tell us... ConfusedBlush

MaureenNervosa · 07/02/2018 21:07

Sorry that should have said ‘turned the clocks back for women...

MaureenNervosa · 07/02/2018 21:06

With me it was the changing room ruling. I’ve been reading threads on MN since then and feel increasingly horrified and vulnerable.

I saw a comment underneath a Guardian news story today that referred to ‘all men/cis/transgender people...’. Not ‘all men/women/transgender people...’ It felt so dismissive and scary to see this - like someone has turned the clocks back and hasn’t bothered to tell them. 😟

Sorry, I can’t remember who said it, or where.

Notonyournellly · 07/02/2018 21:06

duncandonut that was a wtf moment for me too. So unfair. The point I peaked properly was reading an article by Janice Turner about children being allowed hormone treatment which caused them to become infertile.

Weebo · 07/02/2018 21:01

The recent Guardian article about the transwoman prisoner going on hunger strike.

The angle that they chose to portray frightened me.

I have no problem with using preferred pronouns and will always lend my support to the innocent trans people in this whole mess who just want to get on with their lives.

But I will never support anything that comes at the expense of women's/girls rights - It's always at our expense. I've just had enough of that.

2sly4you · 07/02/2018 20:54

Caitlin Jenner going by "Bruce" when she wants to use all the facilities of the golf course. Fuck's sake.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 07/02/2018 20:54

The magnificent and incomparable Magdalen Berns.

And the fact she had been kicked out of the the Uni LGBT group for the whole cotton ceiling crap

Followed v swiftly by learning about autogynephylia

And who could forget Reilly Dennis - the unrivalled master of peaktrans

This thread moved fast! Riverside It was somewhere I had to be professional so I said I wear trousers most days and moved swiftly on.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 07/02/2018 20:52

WiseUp I know this is cruel but i'm glad you are feeling my rage grin I carry this around with me all the time. Shall I pour us both a big gin?

Ooh yes please. The world has gone completely fucking bonkers.

I work in the technical section of largely female-dominated healthcare profession where there really is something approaching equality of opportunity, and I don’t encounter sexism in the workplace, apart from occasionally being patronised by engineers who never try it twice...

I know and care for quite a lot of L, G and presumably B people, and had extended a kind of bonhommie towards unknown T people because I’ve always been gender critical (but had no words to describe it)...

I was busy worrying about the health of loved ones, Brexit, whether the Orange Loon will start WW3, and the NHS dissolving before our eyes...

....and now the bubble has burst and I find I’m a TERF, and most likely everyone hates me.

And I’m working tomorrow so I can’t have any more wine sobs into empty glass

BetsyM00 · 07/02/2018 20:51

Welcome to all the newly peaked! For me it was reading a bbc report on the first women soldier on the front line. Of course, it was a man. Women had only just been allowed to apply for this job and the first round of applications hadn't even been processed at that point. But a man made sure he was in there first to steal their thunder.

I've just updated the To Do List if anyone wants to start taking some action. See the last few posts on this thread:

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 07/02/2018 20:48

I guess I became more 'aware' of these issues since having my own children, the first two being girls. The last year the has been the eye opener to me. These threads I have read with great interest and they make me sad, angry and scared as women's rights and safe spaces are being taken over.

The final straw was the word cis. Fuck you cis, I'm a woman, not a cis woman

busyboysmum · 07/02/2018 20:46

It was the Top Shop thing and the Lily Madigan thing and realising that 2 entitled little shits could mess things up for an entire country of women. And the idiots running the country don't have a clue, it doesn't really affect them so they will just virtue signal away.

OvaHere · 07/02/2018 20:44

Ova - the funny thing is that in both of the above examples, I ended up on the receiving end of a hand maiden's scolding.

What's that all about?

I don't really know, I sometimes think that because we all live under male oppression women either leap towards sisterhood or handmaideness but both are ways of just trying to navigate a system under which we are disadvantaged.

I read some of Dworkins, Right Wing Women a while back and I think it bears some relevance to women TRAs.

CallMeAstroTerf · 07/02/2018 20:41

I read a thread on MN just over a year ago that was to do with Maria Miller's bill. The thread author explained the implications really really well, without emotion or prejudice, and made me investigate the whole thing for myself.

I mentioned it to a few lefty (some gay) male friends at Easter on a weekend away, they weren't terribly interested and thought it ludicrous to believe that any male would self id to get access to women. I thought maybe I over-thinking this (older males = better brains, obviously 🙄)

When the Lily thing blew up, (and Anne being bullied out), I peaked, and I publicised it. Those nice male friends pretty much destroyed me on social media (without naming me, but whispering around all our mutual friends)

Since then, i have a new anonymous Twitter account, Ive been to a WPUK meeting, much more active on here, defriended lots of people, and no longer give a shit about saying PENIS and VAGINA quite loudly when needed Grin DH is on-side but will never be vocal about it, and my lefty commie anciently feminist mum has also come round from "all trans people are as lovely as Jan Morris" to "oh gosh, thats a bit much" Wink

Sorry for the outpouring. Need gin Gin

Notonyournellly · 07/02/2018 20:39

I think for me the seeds of doubt started when Caitlyn Jenner won a Woman of the Year award, and thinking WTF? All those women doing amazing, brave, innovative things around the world, and that's who they picked? I have since followed the topic on here with growing feeling of unease and disbelief at the erosion of women's hard won rights, and have talked about it with DH and teenage DD who are beginning to see the light. DH is a gentle, tolerant sort but was incredulous at the insanity of it all.

sportinguista · 07/02/2018 20:39

For me it's been a slow drip, drip, but the things that really angered me were the speakers corner incident, Lily Madigan and the Rose McGowan incident. Collectively it made me realise that the transsexuals I knew years ago were not anything like this new breed - transgenders. Their vitriol staggered me and the nodebate thing is vicious too. Since I found out the first little snippets it's becoming like a deluge.

Spudlet · 07/02/2018 20:37

It was that person going on hunger strike because they aren't allowed makeup or hair straighteners in prison and because they're in a male prison....

  1. Nobody in prison should have hair straighteners, they are potentially very dangerous
  1. Women are being left to bleed in police cells because no one provides sanitary protection, and this twat is bleating about hair?
  1. Um, hey Guardian, did you forget to mention that this person was imprisoned for sexual offences? Are we meant to be fine with locking this person away with a lot of very vulnerable women? Because I myself am Not.

I feel deeply for ordinary, decent trans people who want to go about their business without harming anyone, and I want them to be able to crack on with their lives, but there must be a way that we can meet their needs without abandoning women to the mercies of any cheeky fucker who decides to put on a dress. This is a conversation that should be being had, but it is not. And that worries me.

Chrysanthemum5 · 07/02/2018 20:33

For me it was being told not to discuss FGM as it was triggering for Trans-identifying men. The idea that I might ignore the plight of 8 year old girls being cut just so as to not upset a man in a dress. Fuck right off

And I have a trans sibling and friends who have been quietly living their lives for years, not hurting anyone, and fully aware that they are not biological women, but grateful people are kind enough to use the pronouns 'she/her' so I know this is all a men's rights activist plot rather than something the genuine trans community think.

drspouse · 07/02/2018 20:32

When people started telling me you had to keep scissors away from toddler boys who like pink.

YourVagesty · 07/02/2018 20:30
