And then the top 5 most read articles (at the time I'm writing this) right below this article once again reinforce that it's biology that women are oppressed based on, with an article about a young child giving birth to her teen brother's baby and a woman who was violently raped and killed in a horrifying way. But I bet you'll hear nothing from the TRAs about either of those cases because they're just about boring old cis women with cis privilege, unlike this brave and beautiful women who is being so cruelly denied being able to live as herself - literal violence, I tell you! Even in the UK there's no way she'd get into a womens prison, even if she were to self id as a woman.

Forget about trans. There are about 14,000 male sex offenders in prison at the moment. How many of them would think it prohibitive to self ID? By downloading a form.

It currently costs £140 but there is a waiver if you can't afford it.

(And it should cost money. Somebody is being paid to process the work. They're not doing it for free.)

Potentially 14,000 men happy to tie up the system, at the very least, and at the very best, get transferred to the female estate.

So say they bring in some kind of assessment to find out whether or not the person is a danger to women.

And, at the very least, the female estate will be inundated with men. There are currently 5000 women overall in prison, almost half of whom have suffered some kind of sexual trauma.

And what for?

To validate a man's identity?

Because, you can bet your life, there will not be a queue of transmen clamouring to get into the male estate.

Mummy I agree. The current system is not perfect but the GRC system could be improved without hurling the baby out with the bathwater. For example the cost, which is being called prohibitive, and the expectation that anyone applying for a GRC demonstrates extreme femininity which is not usual or typical of women in general.

But the current system we have now allows self ID in the majority of situations, just reserving some case by case decisions in some situations, and allowing some things to be reserved for specific biological sexes. (Which includes people with a GRC who has legally changed their sex)

Myunicornfliessideways if that is the proposal for self id then those are the issues we need to shout loud and clear about. I did the Scottish consultation and though I supported the general principals I was very clear it should not compromise prisons and refuges. Its possible to improve a system without crossing clear boundaries.

It's not distinct though is it? Because this person has committed male pattern violence. If we start recording male crime as female crime then statistical analysis is meaningless. Female crime will look as if it has gone through the roof and male crime the opposite way.

Can you not see why this has serious implications for women? Men already seek to dismiss male violence as a class by insisting women are just as bad when this is blatantly just not true. Fake statistics will back up their lies and be used to further erode women's protections.

Mummy as far as I'm aware, the Equality Act means that someone with a GRC (very small number of people) which includes a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, would automatically be housed in the female estate. At the moment the way things legally stand, in cases of self ID there is freedom for case by case decisions, some of which have ended badly, see the newspaper reports of the TIM who was moved to a womens' prison following all due process and discussions following self ID and then had to be segregated for sexually harassing and assaulting women prisoners. Under current legislation the bottom line is also that exemptions can be made by legal sex (which includes people with GRCs) if the need is significant. IE we will not put this TIM with a massive record for rape and assault in a women's prison.

That's the current state of play.

The proposed change to law is that these exemptions would go. Anyone who self ids, no matter how casually, with or without the condition of gender dysphoria, would be the sex they say, and that would have to be respected in every single case, irrespective of the person's history or criminal behaviour. It simply would not be relevant. So yes, Ian Huntley would be one of the people benefitting.

Take alongside this the TRA lobby view that trans people cannot commit rape, due to the privilege/power imbalance: the worst a trans person can do is have non consensual sex with you; that trans people cannot be guilty of a crime (again the privilege power imbalance), that trans people with a history of sexual offending committed those crimes because of the emotional pressure of their being trans and they are therefore the victims, and putting them amongst other women will relieve their condition, and also the Action for Trans Health manifesto which demands the immediate pardon and release of all trans prisoners.

At present 'transitioned' includes people with and without a grc. Somebody with a grc is legally a woman and will go automatically into a women's prison unless they are extraordinarily dangerous. Somebody without a grc is legally male and as you say discretion can still be used about where they are housed. If they bring in self id, that discretion will be lost.

I've no problem using the name and pronouns somebody wants to be known by, though thats more this scumbag deserves. Even radfems (Bindel, Greer etc.) are on record saying they'll happily use female pronouns if someone identifies that way but it doesn't mean they are women. We'll agree to differ on that. Thats quite distinct from the crimes of this person and outrageous claims they are making.

Can you seriously not see the glaring contradiction in what you’ve just said??? There’s no way no way she’s get into to woman’s prison even if she did self is as a woman... why are you using female pronouns if you think he wouldn’t get into a woman’s prison? If self is goes through of course he’ll get into a woman’s prison because if he says he’s a she then he IS a sr as far as the law is concerned. You are helping people like this live the lie and give weight to their argument by using she to refer to him. He’s a male who abused a young girl, he is taking the piss. I don't actually think it is this straightforward, at least I hope not. Can't find the exact wording but I thought someone thought to have transitioned to make offending against women easier can be kept in the male estate, or in a secure unit which naturally is found in male prisons. I believe Ireland exempts prisons from their self id as well. If someone can find clear evidence I'm wrong I'd like to freak out how easy it is for these monsters see it.
