Interesting and thoughtful article

You'd end up not looking at a great many things though wouldn't you? Just about everything has been accused of bias or been proven to have a degree of bias. I suspect if I turned away from just about everything that may or may not trick me I'd end up reading 'See Spot Run' - all the time.

RatRolyPoly · 07/02/2018 19:05

Hmm... everyone thinks they won't be tricked by charlatans, and yet so many are. If you're sure you don't want to be hypnotised you don't look at the watch. That's my feeling on things.

sportinguista · 07/02/2018 18:46

The key is your own integrity and ability to think critically through an issue and come up with your own conclusions, listening carefully to what people say and questioning why they say it and being aware of their possible biases. I read everything from the Guardian to little local papers although paywalls do annoy me!

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 07/02/2018 18:42

I don't think there are any links between trans activism, immigration and Islam frogsoup. I didn't notice you being threatened with an IP address search but if so I agree that is absolutely not on

I reported the IP threat. I may possibly be the reason its been deleted.

I don;t agree with a lot of whats being posted, however I am always interested in..different opinions. So I have found the thread interesting whilst not agreeing with a lot of it.

Justabunchofcunts · 07/02/2018 18:28

Meant to say get an unbiased viewpoint, but I guess autocorrect is also suspicious of my own filters!

Justabunchofcunts · 07/02/2018 18:27

I do get that frog. I am thoughtful about things like that.

But my views on what to read and what sources to trust have been thrown with the recent reporting of trans and women's rights. The Guardian appears to be deliberately omitting critical facts around women's safety where the Mail will report it. They're ALL biased sources, just different bias. Reading - and critically evaluating - as many of them as possible is the best way to get a biased viewpoint.

sportinguista · 07/02/2018 18:24

There are a great many ads on the internet and a great many I disagree with in varying degrees. I've had sites I've visited for software etc come up with some very unexpected results as regards of that. I can't control everything on it, in fact very little I suspect. I've been on facebook and there's been ads for stuff I disagree with but I still use it as unfortunately I need to for my business. I accept that I am not the ruler of the world and I do what I can where I can...

frogsoup · 07/02/2018 18:13

And who do you think your ad views go towards funding when you click on a breitbart link?!

sportinguista · 07/02/2018 18:07

I must say Guardian I too am of a similar opinion. I can listen to all views. Doesn't necessarily mean I agree but I will listen. I read extensively and believe you need to access a broad range of material and draw your own conclusions. In other words I can read Breibart without becoming a far right sympathiser just as I can read the Momentum website without becoming a paid up member!

Justabunchofcunts · 07/02/2018 17:33

I have to say Guardian, I am increasingly of your view here.

GuardianLions · 07/02/2018 17:20

This thread has made me think a lot about discussion and taboo and how Brexit & Trump happened as well as the silencing of gender-critics.

I am pro-EU and I believe it helped keep stability in Europe since WWII -(someone joked to me - if we hug each-other tightly enough we can't punch eachother), I have also found that it has provided a platform and a means by which feminists and environmentalists can work together internationally.

Yet, yet, - people don't like to be silenced and prevented from discussing what is right in front of them because it will be construed as phobic or racist. Resentment builds. I think Brexit and Trump was a big Fuck YOU to all the enforced political correctness and that was a huge price to pay for making certain topics taboo.

It is important that discussion occurs and I am not keen on the idea that we can't have a feminist critique of Islam without being accused of racism, or we can't ask the meta-questions about 'who are the silent benefactors/megalomaniacs behind the trans movement?', 'what are they trying to achieve?' without being accused of being a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, any more than I am keen on being called a transphobe for critiquing gender.

Some of infamousTs links did freak me out because they were clearly pushing for certain conclusions. But juxtaposing them with the Fairplay for Women link, made me realise how my gender-critical position could make me look a fearmongering loon (something I'd never thought before). However, I wouldn't expect anyone to be persuaded by looking at a link like FFW - they don't have long-standing enough credentials even though I agree with them. So perhaps I worried unduly.

But the long and short is, I am not keen on taboos or shaming people for being interested in discussing certain subjects, reflecting on certain events and developments or trying to make sense of all the loose ends. I think it is better to speak, get it all out in the open, get to the heart of the matter, find out the truth and then move on. And do it respectfully.

picklemepopcorn · 07/02/2018 16:24

Thank goodness for Karen.

picklemepopcorn · 07/02/2018 16:24

I've Googled women killed in 2017 and lactatia. Sigh.

infamousT I don't get the need for the hostility. People on MN already speak about the homosexuals being forced to trans in Iran and other big links between religious conservatism and transgenderism- ie - the similarity between believing in a ''soul' and an 'identity', also the dislike of people deviating from sex-role stereotypes, so you either 'conform' or 'cross'.

picklemepopcorn · 07/02/2018 16:12

I'm not buying into anything else, but T's experiences related to the trans issue are relevant.

picklemepopcorn · 07/02/2018 16:11

Hold on T, I haven't seen the deleted posts so may be missing something. By and large people are listening. You have the freedom to speak, we have the freedom to listen and discern what we take on board. Sometimes it takes a while for new ideas to sink in and resonate. A lot of posters here took a while to understand about the threat of the current trans agenda, but have come round after a while.

nauticant · 07/02/2018 16:11

I'm completely with @frogsoup and @TheWizardOfWas about this thread. I'm amazed that many posters are cheerfully looking past the conspiracy theory, and worse, stuff because of feeling there's a common cause in some respects.

It has been a complete eye-opener for me.

OvaHere · 07/02/2018 16:09

Some of the comments under that video are shocking. Pure far right nationalism.

I would agree there are things to criticise about Merkel's policies but straight up neo naziism isn't the answer.

That's not who I want to align with to promote women's rights against transactivism.

infamousT · 07/02/2018 16:02

I'm bored of this now.... I've read all these links and hundreds if not thousands more over the last couple of years...

But you call me names. Yeah - cuz that will really help sort out this unholy mess.

My God, I find hypocrites unutterably loathsome.

Zealots are always hypocrites, because they are bigots and authoritarians by nature.

I'm outta here... really. Try reading something from outside your bubble once in a while.

...and sure - it's from across the pond - but explains the links in philosophy quite adequately...

But - heck. I'm a racist, transphobic fearmonger, and nothing else - aren't I?

Sweden has been leading the way in sex equality and social progressiveness for years and this of course led to a massive regressive counter movement.

infamousT · 07/02/2018 15:55

...and it's because I just talk nonsense isn't it?

So some more 'fearmongering' on the other subject...

Enjoy.
