Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is "cis" the future ?

I will admit to being new to the topic and still reading but many threads on here have lead me to further reading. I don't think I've ever bothered with the whole feminist thing until now when I see it being threatened by the trans agenda. Im starting to now feel much more protective about women's rights perhaps it's because I'm older or perhaps in my lifetime there's never been a threat to it ? I'm fearful to say even that for being accused of transphobia and I have no issue at all with anyone living their life as they wish - but I have a daughter and am now fearful for the future - will she have safe women only spaces ? Possibly not. Will she have to call herself a cis woman rather than just a woman ?
I dislike the agenda that you cannot debate or disagree or you're a bigot . It seems so backwards and confusing
I feel ignorant about what's going on out there and would love some insight from better informed posters here .

Hi all popping back to say thanks for the lessons! I feel I've got my diploma now having spent a few weeks reading everything I can. In a way I wish I was still ignorant of this as it is so depressing at times although also funny in a scary way what I read !
I tried to talk to my dear elderly Mum about it she looked a bit mind blown so I have a list of articles to email her tomorrow. I plan to convert as many as I can

I've seen the Gender Trender article about Andi, the heckler. Who is the poster who has contacted the main-steam press recently? Surely this is a story that really needs to be out there.

Brave transwoman heckles evil cis scum is a very different story to Sex offender shouts down rape survivor.

OlennasWimple · 03/02/2018 13:41

Mummy - yeah, I wear that badge with pride. I'm happy to exclude men TRAs from my feminism

Myunicorn - great questions.

I would add that I'm glad (in a way) that university students are activists, because that's always been the way and should always been the way. I'm not old enough to know for certain, but I would imagine that 1960s/70s MN would have had concerns about CND protesters, animal rights and Greenpeace activists, anti-Vietnam protesters etc etc. (The big difference, of course, being that none of these involved an invidious underlying theology nor the outright bullying that TRAs engage in)

So whilst we should absolutely think about what we can do better for our kids, we shoudl also think about the extent to which this is this generation's "thing", and how we help ensure that the permanent damage some individuals are doing to themselves is minimised

Myunicornfliessideways · 03/02/2018 12:51

I can't engage with anything Madigan and others of the ilk say any more. It's rather like the feeling when you catch your three year old red handed with the pen in their hand, scribbling on the wall, and they hold the pen and swear blind to you it wasn't them/it was their friend/brother/the cat. There is just no point trying to discuss something rationally with someone not capable of rational discussion.

The questions that come to mind as an adult when these young TRAs talk is:

  • ok, they're mostly university students. What was their school experience? Are we looking at the fall out of bullying, or social rejection, behaviour disorders or poor social skills, or unmet mental health needs that caused young adults to end up sucked into this ideology? What do we need to do better for kids?

  • Where do these TRAs fit with the current wave of belief in university students that the world revolves around them, nothing and no one is deserving of respect, and if anyone says (or thinks) anything you disagree with then it's appropriate for an adult to respond by shouting abuse and in two cases in the last week, having physical tantrums to silence adult authority figures they wanted to punish and control. #whatthefuckinghellhavewedonetothisgeneration?

  • Where do these late transitioning/no gender dysphoria highly politicised angry young men (and it's only the transwomen, we're not getting transmen threatening rape and battery or creating hit lists while being indulged by older adults) fit in the system compared to the other massive group of adult male transitioners for whom it is mostly a sexual fetish or midlife crisis.

Olennas
Simply suggesting he needs therapy makes you a TERF Confused

OlennasWimple · 03/02/2018 12:31

Madigan is a MRA opportunist who needs a good therapist to help him work through his problems with his family and why he feels like a failure as a male (to put it in full)

AngryAttackKittens · 03/02/2018 10:49

It's hilarious to see people who don't believe that material reality is a thing that exists claiming to be Marxists. Bless. I'd love to be a fly on the wall the first time they meet a real Marxist.

LangCleg · 03/02/2018 10:47

the delicate wee studenty types was about being forced to confront their greatest enemy...reality

LOL! Quite! The ones that don't continue on to academia to continue to promulgate this crap will get a massive smack in the face when they see how social contructionism flies in the real world. Including in actual leftist circles.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/02/2018 10:33

I'm guessing lots of people here may not like South Park but Zapp's post just makes me think of the Snidely Whiplash looking character from the last season whose best line about the delicate wee studenty types was about being forced to confront their greatest enemy...reality.

Madigan is a MRA opportunist

Couldn’t agree more. I posted a legitimate question on Twitter. Was immediately blocked from his site. He doesn’t want dialogue. I think there are a number of MRA’s, who have decided to jump on the popular TRA movement.

I have become more and more of a feminist as I’ve aged. I thought naively when I was younger that misogyny was dying. I see I was sorely mistaken.

SpartacusReality · 03/02/2018 08:37

I have not had any particular interest in politics or activism until the past few years. I mean I've signed petitions and written the occasional letter to my MP over various issues, and discussed things now and again with friends, but nothing that could be called activism. So I feel a bit guilty for ignoring everything else up till now. Usually I have felt "what can I do" about most issues that concern me - as in, I think the current treatment of disabled people by the government is appalling, but aside from signing petitions that get ignored (and voting) I don't know what I can actually do about it.

But this issue seems to be something that potentially I can do something about - perhaps. It feels like a there is tipping point if the GRA is amended, and awareness raising may have an impact on that. I am also motivated by fear for myself, for all women, particularly for vulnerable women, and for my daughters.

I know toilets are far from the only issue but my children are at the age where they are starting to get a bit more independence. My daughter sometimes visits the ladies loos on her own (at e.g. local library, not at Waterloo Station where 10000000 people go in and out). It's one little step towards independence and growing up. If men are likely to be in those loos I would have to start going in with her again for a few more years. That thought alone fills me with rage. Rage that men would be taking away the right of girls to gaining independence. It's a small thing, but it's not a small thing. What right does a man have to restrict my daughter's life?

thebewilderness · 03/02/2018 08:12

I am old and have been a feminist for a very long time.

100YearsOfVote · 03/02/2018 07:37

Oops cis woman even!

iPhone doesn't get cis either Grin

100YearsOfVote · 03/02/2018 07:37

I will never identify as a vid woman.

matt1978 · 03/02/2018 07:36

bewilderness I appreciate you helping explain to me even though it's hard over a forum because it's just so broad ! I just don't want to be ignorant anymore to this!
"LGB let the T in, even though it is not a sexual orientation" wow I've never ever considered that fact and it's interesting !

May I ask, without invading your privacy, how you are so knowledgeable on this ?

There is also the fact that the claim that Trans win the Oppression Olympic is a lie.
The trans identified males who are Black and being prostituted are the ones with the high death rate, though not as high as Native American women.
Trans identified males have a lower risk of being murdered in the US than the average man or woman.
They have repeated these lies so many times it is possible they even believe them by now. In the UK there are more trans identified male perps than there are victims.

thebewilderness · 03/02/2018 06:50

That self declared transgender, Andi, who tried to shout down Rose, is a sexual predator who preys on 12 year old girls at the local ,mall. He is a perfect example of what Labour is promoting and Feminists are screaming about.

thebewilderness · 03/02/2018 06:46

AGP (autogynephilia) is a fetish. Some men have fetishes about being a baby and some get a boner from masturbating in their daughter's underwear like Jenner. Right now the kinksters are trying to be added to the LGBTQuiltbag as though torture were a sexual orientation.
The answer to your question is that Madigan is an MRA opportunist, in my opinion, like the men who declare themselves women to compete in women's athletics, not a subset of transitioned people, nor do I think fetishists are. They seem to view themselves as failed men and assume wrongly that a failed man is a woman. The medical profession will bear a terrible burden of guilt for promoting this idea.

Gender dysphoria has more in common with anorexia than it does with fetishes like AGP.
Problem is that the LGB let the T in, even though it is not a sexual orientation and the T raised an umbrella that covers anyone who identifies as trans in an effort to convert as many people as possible to the cult.
What we have with the Labour Party and the Olympic committee is a policy that substitutes belief for material reality. S my questin is,
Can you mandate belief?
Can you codify into law the idea that some people can mind over matter themselves out of material reality and into the opposite sex and must be treated accordingly?
It is like transubstantiation. A belief that no one actually believes.
Will you allow people to drug and mutilate children based on this belief that no one believes?
I am kinda all over the place trying to think how to condense the past 13 years into a few paragraphs.

matt1978 · 03/02/2018 06:42

Just been on MBs twitter watching the shit about rose McGowan "shouting down a trans woman". The comments are blowing my mind actually. Rose gets angry at being called "cis" and says "fuck off with your labels" having also said to the other party "we have the same experiences" and calling them "sister". A lot of the comments mention "cis" and "privilege" and many commenters from what I can see are women who are fairly apologetic about their so called "privilege" (that being the privilege of being born with a vagina). I'm not sure how to link but I'll try. It's riling me but I can't respond as use my twitter for my business (there's that fear again!) . It's really fucking scary.
Rose McGowan is trying to make a stand for WOMEN in Hollywood and gets "well we get raped MORE". Isn't that totally missing the point ? It's not a competition and why can't women and trans women both be permitted to speak of their experiences as separate issues, which surely they are ?
The issues and discrimination facing the trans community are surely unique to being trans rather than the separate issues faced by women ? Saying that doesn't invalidate those issues or experiences but it seems that saying so and denying the trans experiences are worse than women's experiences (neither is worse surely they're separate?) makes you transphobic

Apologies for all the posts it appears I've reached "peak trans" today

thebewilderness "if you don't have dysphoria your not really a candidate for transition" so where do LM and MB sit in this ? Sorry to keep asking about them specifically but they seem to be representative of TRA (if I'm getting it right)
Do they NOT have dysphoria? How would you categorize them ?
I hope you don't mind all the questions this is something I'm new too and I want to be clear in my understanding of the players and the issues here.
I just can't understand why a subset of the same group who are screaming for inclusivity would be screaming to exclude and alienate another subset of their group (in using "group" just as a collective noun here meaning no disrespect). If trans people are already a minority I don't get why some would want to split that minority further if you see what I mean.
Im trying to put it in perspective- would it be like me being, I dunno, just for want of an example, part of a small minority of red haired welsh women but then getting together with a sub group and us deciding that only red haired welsh women who chose to cut their hair short were the legitimate representatives of this group and those who kept theirs long could fuck off as they're some kind of fakers and not true to the cause ( sorry I realize completely ridiculous example!).

thebewilderness · 03/02/2018 05:46

Some older trans who had the surgery like Snowflake Especial and Miranda Yardley tried to reel in the misogyny from the AGPs. Truscum is the rage response to being told that if you don't have dysphoria your not really a candidate for transition.
It has only blown up in the past ten years or so. Prior to that the LGB were trying to find a compromise with the demands of the T.
Another aspect of what we are seeing with thousands of children suddenly claiming to be trans is the social contagion effect writ large on the interwebs.
Also young girls are calling themselves all manner of asexuals and demisexuals in order to avoid being expected to give blow jobs on the school bus and during lunch break to the pornsick weasels they are surrounded with. It is a rough time to be a teen.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/02/2018 05:15

The "truscum" thing is petulant tantrum throwing combined with an attempt to shift the perception of what "trans" means in a way that allows inclusion of people who under the old system would never have been allowed to transition, imo.

I wish I could say that the "WTF this makes my head hurt" feeling goes away as you learn more but it's quite the opposite. This stuff is absurd.
