''100 years on since the first women got the vote, there are still inequalities in the feminist movement. Why are some feminists still failing transwomen?

The evidence is there if you look for it – Transphobic leaflets being given out in the safe zone at Labour annual conference; prominent party feminists suggesting violence against transwomen; someone being kicked out of a Labour Women’s Network party for harassing a teenage trans woman; fundraisers being started to try and legally challenge Labours trans-inclusive policies; transwomen being excluded from Labour run women’s events by a women’s officer. The list goes on.

Most state their actions aren’t transphobic at all, but they are merely seeking the protection of women’s spaces. Some go further, suggesting transwomen are men’s right activists working purposely to erode women’s hard won protects. They commonly misgender people like me as a means to belittle our experiences and score social media points. And so I think its fair we question how much authority they have as cis-women to decide whether they are being transphobic.''

It continues in this vein.

"Why should feminists be doing anything in particular for transwomen?" would be a more relevant question.

Just because someone has a uterus does not mean that she's obliged to be your mum. Fight your own battles - we're busy.

genuflects in the direction of the great and mighty Pidgeon

AngryAttackKittens · 01/02/2018 09:29

That particular bit the Pigeon quoted really grinds my gears because it's an appropriation (what a surprise!) of a valid argument about racism, that when deciding if something is racist it makes sense to ask the people who would be the targets rather than the people doing the targeting. Except that while the group directly impacted by a thing will always understand the thing better than anyone else, that doesn't mean that they're infallible and that there aren't people within every group whose judgement leaves a lot to be desired. So in terms of the stuff Lily calls transphobic, imagine if someone said "crisps are racist, as are wine gums". In that case their being part of a group targeted by racism wouldn't mean that they were right, they'd still be talking nonsense.

GetDownDog · 01/02/2018 09:29

"Why are some feminists still failing transwomen?"

Translated as "feminism should be all about men"?

Datun · 01/02/2018 09:29

It really is the outside of enough, isn't it?

"We really have to question whether women have the authority to decide what constitutes a woman."

What comes across incredibly strongly, is the us and them battlelines that he himself has drawn.

He consistently and deliberately puts himself outside the cohort women. He can't help it.

He has nothing but contempt for women.

Not only does he not see himself as a woman, he can't even bear to align himself with them to promote himself.

womanhuman · 01/02/2018 09:28

read a book occasionally, there's a dear
Lily read a Black Lives Matter book this week. Fully expecting Lily soon to tell BAME people they’re doing it wrong.

PerfPower · 01/02/2018 09:23

I've just had a quick scroll through his twitter for the first time, absolutely everything is about trans and nothing about women. He's not even pretending to care about women, just himself and trans. Doesn't he have to prove to be doing something for women to keep his role as women's officer? Does anybody know what the role of a women's officer is? It's surely nothing like what he's doing -the whole purging of women thing.

PidgeonPodge · 01/02/2018 09:21

Lo and behold 'cis' women!

I am one of many great and mighty transsexuals.

I did look upon your discussions, and I did see that they are good.

And I hereby declare you....NOT TRANSPHOBIC.

You may continue with our blessing Halo

Ereshkigal · 01/02/2018 09:19

Sorry pressed send too soon! I agree with this, I meant to say.

Lily may be the best thing that's ever happened to the pushback against TRAs in the UK. There's just no way he comes across as credible to anyone who's not already knee deep in queer theory. He's a petulant, egotistical little brat

Fekko · 01/02/2018 09:17

As my mum used to say ‘it will all come out in the wash’.

So certain people really do need to think about who they are alienating (friends, family, natural allies) and who they are siding themselves with.

hackmum · 01/02/2018 09:15

Tallulah - I was just about to paste that exact same quote about "the injunctive to avoid saying anything that could be construed as transphobic is genuinely more important than defending basic tenets of sanity that should hardly need to be stated".

It so completely and utterly hits the nail on the head. What he says about memetics and how some ideas spread is also very true. One of the ways they spread is through the idea of being "on the right side of history". Who, after all, wants to be on the wrong side of history? Who wants to be a nasty anti-liberal, anti-progressive transphobe, persecuting a supposedly vulnerable minority?

TanquerayTickles · 01/02/2018 09:13

It's utterly ridiculous and narcissistic, my 11 year old could compose a better piece of creative writing.

LM blocked me yesterday for pointing out that what they said about Linda Bellos was an outright lie and they should respect the people that paved the way. That was it, nothing that could be construed as Transphobic or bigoted or any of the other labels that are thrown about.

Someone tagged me in a terf blocker list too. Wevs.

www.transgendertrend.com/a-scientist-reviews-transgender-suicide-stats/
For anyone who wants a breakdown of the 50% suicide claim.

Threatening suicide is an abusive tactic. Attributing young people's suicidality to one cause is irresponsible and contributes to social contagion and copycat behaviour.

Children and young people who identify as trans almost always have comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, self harm, autism spectrum conditions and histories of abuse. Even if it were true that 50% attempted suicide there is no reason to conclude that is because they are trans or because they aren't given hormones or whatever the reason transactivists give for the supposed suicide statistics.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/02/2018 08:53

Not that I'd ever have called myself a liberal, but this whole situation is a perfect example of why I've always called myself a leftist instead. The real left cares about material reality. Class analysis is based on it.

TIMs are not part of Class Woman in any material sense. Marx and Engels wrote about the material basis of women's oppression a long time ago, and none of their analysis applies to TIMs.

NataliaOsipova · 01/02/2018 08:52

But about that,Is this not the same Lily who was invited on radio 4 world at 1 this week, then refused to debate with Linda Bellos?

That was a fine, fine interview.....!

ShotsFired · 01/02/2018 08:51

"Studies suggest near half of transexual youth will attempt suicide"

@Datun Studies suggest nothing of the kind. They have been numerous articles about it

Perhaps this was the source: www.facebook.com/TheInstituteForStudiesuk/

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 01/02/2018 08:48

to educated liberals in the Current Year, the injunctive to avoid saying anything that could be construed as transphobic is genuinely more important than defending basic tenets of sanity that should hardly need to be stated, let alone defended, like Words should mean things, or Knowledge is better than ignorance.

This! From the article posted by stopmakingsense. I had one of those 'oh thank god it's not just me going mad' moments reading that

AngryAttackKittens · 01/02/2018 08:41

Even if you've never heard of narcissism, the article comes across as one big tantrum.

Yep. You can just picture him stamping his feetsies and throwing his toys at the wall.

Lily may be the best thing that's ever happened to the pushback against TRAs in the UK. There's just no way he comes across as credible to anyone who's not already knee deep in queer theory. He's a petulant, egotistical little brat.

Tinycitrus · 01/02/2018 08:41

I think you are probably giving this young person more attention than is warranted and all it does is confirm to them that they are a victim of transphobia.

Focus on the bigger picture not the individuals within.

MountainsofMars · 01/02/2018 08:34

So feminism of the last 100 years is all about the trans? Actually, Lily might well ask about the support for women who cross-dressed as men in order to get access to male professions, male education, male salary, male training.

But no.

(Hint to Lily: the history of women's thinking and writing about patriarchy goes back far far beyond 100 years - read a book occasionally, there's a dear)

Datun · 01/02/2018 08:30

Doesn't it just make you rage and want to punish them? We know, and now anyone else who read your article does too.

Exactly. That's why am certain hasn't been sanctioned from above.

Because anyone with a red pen would have gone through it and neutralised the language to make it sound credible.

Even if you've never heard of narcissism, the article comes across as one big tantrum.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/02/2018 08:27

Also note that lying with no shred of guilt is a feature of most Cluster B disorders.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/02/2018 08:26

Studies suggest near half of transexual youth will attempt suicide

Speaking of percentages, let's talk about the percentage of trans women who have narcissistic personality disorder, and/or at least one of the other Cluster B disorders. Because it's a lot (last study I saw was at least 50% for NPD plus a grab bag of other Cluster B disorders).

Lily certainly is providing a perfect illustration of that particular set of statistics. Don't you just hate it when people don't do what you want them to, Lily? Doesn't it just make you rage and want to punish them? We know, and now anyone else who read your article does too.

Fekko · 01/02/2018 08:23

Maybe Lilly is a infiltrator - there to completely bamboozle the party and drive away members?
