Finally joined twitter

Morning all Smile I've finally got my arse in gear and joined Twitter. Ive followed some of the obvious people (drradfem, a womans place etc) just wondering if anyone can recommend anyone else? I don't really understand Twitter! Do I need to follow the TRAs to see what they're saying or will things like that just appear in my feed?

Sorry for all the questions Smile

PM me your twitter handle and I'll follow you.

Thanks again everyone, I think I'm getting the hang of it Grin

Please could I suggest everyone follows @jamesfreespeech?

This is the academic who had funding for his research into detransitioners withdrawn by Bath Spa university because they feared the trans backlash.

He seems to be new to twitter (I'd expect him to have more than 200 followers given the press he's had).

Has anyone got any ideas on how we can give his profile a boost / get him more followers? He could do with some support as he needs to raise funds for his legal campaign.

In case you haven't heard of this:

I also just rejoined twitter with an anonymous profile so I can say what I think (would lose my job otherwise).

Also cast aside my old MN name here! Getting very paranoid about TRAs looking at my MN posts!

Thanks for this thread, really useful.

You're not on twitter datun are you? I wish you were!

2018username · 30/01/2018 11:49

Crash course in twitter

DO NOT use your email address as a user name!! And don't link your twitter handle to your mumsnet user name!

These are the people to follow who's message we need to get to a wider audience @WomansPlaceUK @fairplaywomen @FiLiAcharity @gencritgreens @sexgenderethics @Transgendertrd @4thWaveNow @CriticalSisters @BiologicalWMN @MagdalenBerns

Trans people who are not the #transcult @KJHarrison @hopepinkboots @DebbieHayton @TerrorizerMir @transnitemare

Men who can't believe the shit they're hearing @jackappleby @PaulEmbery @DavidTCDavies @ThrowawayGay @kevinovenden

Journalists and bloggers @VictoriaPeckham @TimesLucy @glosswitch @GappyTales @LilyLilyMaynard

Random brilliant women @VixenScience @ProtectFemales @JammersMinde @IndyLeya @SkepticatUK probably anybody with 'Goody' in their handle and literally 1000's more

Follow the news channels, follow the political parties, follow MP's and councillors.

You will find like minded people as you go, follow them.

You will find people who agree with you 100% on the issue but you're poles apart on others leave/remain pro-life/pro-choice red/blue religious/atheist Huns/ODFOD love/loath KH vegan/meat eater. Don't be picky about your allies but do draw your own lines, don't align with the devil to fight Satan!

See something funny ie 'Spider-Man wears Sheila jefferies PJ's like it' .

See an article/point that needs to be shared i.e. Daily express article pointing out government being advised by 'fringe lunatic group' re tweet it.

Come across young 'woke' person alleging they represent a political party spouting crap like 'lesbians who won't sleep with women with penises are trans misogynistic' tell them off then 'quote tweet' them and @ their political party or the press and ask is that really acceptable behaviour!

If someone 'likes' or 'retweets' you check out their profile, if they look like an ally follow them.

Even if you aren't tweeting under your own name/picture do not commit libel!! Be factual and get the message out there!

Hashtag things and click on hashtags #labourlosingwomen #sexnotgender #womendonthavedicks #EA2010 try and link to trending hashtags like #tuesdaythoughts

See something offensive report it! Somebody says something about 'TERFs' they are directing hate at a group of people, report it! Twitter are doing better at upholding complaints!

If you come across someone who's just a bit confused/wants to be kind but hasn't been totally lost to the #transcult direct them to reading material!

Sorry if I'm being patronising or teaching your grandmother to suck eggs but twitter is full of absolutely amazing women making well researched and educated points to their 10 followers!!! We need to all join together and get these women heard!

TheXXFactor · 30/01/2018 11:40

All Twitter polls are nonsense and drradfem is daft to have tweeted this one - the TRA takeover was inevitable

LangCleg · 30/01/2018 09:37

Here's a lovely account posting art by women. Its tweets improve your timeline no end!

@womensart1

Riverside2 · 30/01/2018 09:15

OP set your account to private, there's way too much crazy out there.

Datun · 30/01/2018 09:11

The better question for Venice to have put up is, are autogynephilic transwomen, women?

One of those heads I win, tails you lose questions.

Because firstly, it is very definitely a salient point.

Secondly, it gets the word autogynephile out there.

And anyone replying yes is revealing themself.

I was thinking you may not get many answers, but the narcissism of some of these trans-activists would probably still make them comment.

Bring these people out of the woodwork.

BeyondWitchbitchterf · 30/01/2018 08:34

If you search #mumsnet and read through for feministy comments, you might find a few more of us Grin

MorrisZapp · 30/01/2018 08:03

If you follow a couple of gender critical people you'll soon link to others you can follow. I've also followed loads of humourous accounts because otherwise it would be so bloody depressing.

I follow BBC breaking news only.

I did follow a couple of local traffic accounts but they posted continously so I unfollowed.

If you're watching a popular TV show you can hash tag it and it's like the whole of twitter is on the sofa with you.

It takes ages to work out how to follow threads and comments.

Battleax · 30/01/2018 07:59

But yes, the TRAs are all over Venice' account like flies. That's probably the bigger problem.

Battleax · 30/01/2018 07:58

I think people have heard "transwomen are women" so many times now that that's what they expec. So if you ask the opposite, you lose people.

sanluca · 30/01/2018 07:54

Do you think that if she had worded it differently, say "do you think transeomrn are still biologically male?" the outcome would be different? Or do these things not stand any chance anyway because TRA's are techsavy and will just bury you in posts.

Whatever you think about the topic, they are a nasty, impolite and narcistic lot, generally speaking.

Battleax · 30/01/2018 07:53

Phrasing and trolling. Look at this one so far;

stoneagefertilitydoll · 30/01/2018 07:25

I wouldn't trust a twitter poll to be in any way indicative - it's going to have been spammed to hell by the (see my post above) tech literate TIMs

Foolish of her to even give it a go really (but then that's Venice isn't it? My impression is she's a bit of a do then think rather than think then do person)

sanluca · 30/01/2018 06:51

Delurking, to ask a silly question about Twitter. So Drradfem has a poll up, about transwoman being men. Over 16000 votes and 80% say no. Reading here and on Twitter I would think this would be the other way round, so people would say yes.
So what do you think, is the question incorrectly phrased, or too goading or do people really believe this?

I do feel bad for the lady in question, the transactivists are rubbing their hands in glee... feels a lot like kicking a person when they are down.

stoneagefertilitydoll · 30/01/2018 05:37

I have a twitter account, have had it, largely unused for years, I followed about 10 people, all tech, related to my area of expertise.

During all of this, I've returned to lurk (and follow a load of GC people) - but in reading the GC tweets, I've also been reading the tech tweets (many, many fewer than the GC tweets) - and I've seen something that I didn't when I was last on twitter (about 5 years ago):

About once every other day, one of the tech people I follow retweets something from a TIM tech person (different TIMs - 3 or 4 in the last week I've been back reading twitter) . I know this, because I look at the avatar/the content of their tweet (one TIM talking about bringing a mermaid tail to a work offsite for instance), my head goes 'that's not a woman' and when I look at their profile, it turns out I'm right.

In fact, the people I follow retweet more TIMs than women (I just went and counted)

TIMs are hugely over-represented in tech - more than I'd actually realised (I've been freelance for years, and tend to avoid large companies anyway).

I like this one too:

Jyn This reply raised a chuckle:
