Here's the URL: please do the consultation. (I think this has been posted before, but it bears repeating.)
consult.gov.scot/family-law/review-of-the-gender-recognition-act-2004/
To note:

  1. At the end, you will be asked whether you are resident in Scotland, the rest of the UK, or elsewhere - i.e. you don't have to be in Scotland, though obviously it's more important to be heard if you are.
  2. You will also be asked whether you want your response published with your name, without your name, or not at all - if that makes a difference to how you write your answers, it might be helpful to know this up front. Closes on March 1st, but don't wait till then!

Couple of points on all of this.

The Scottish government (SNP in effect for the past decade) have form for forcing through poor legislation. Only yesterday it was announced that tehy would be repealing an Act designed to tackle sectarianism in football. This was pushed through in 2011 on SNP votes only. Almost everyone else, whatever their political persuasion, agrees that it;s a dreadful piece of legislation which doesn't do the job it was intended to do.

Also, the SNP do not permit dissent in their ranks. SNP MPs at Westminster or MSPs in Holyrood are not allowed to vote against party policy. So you don't get the situation of "rebels" who vote on their conscience of go against the majority for whatever reason or abstain. They vote on masse.

The SNP don't have an overall majority, but do with the Green vote. The Green MSPs are right at the front of this whole self-identificaiton thing and will take pride in supporting the legilsation through.

I;ve seen these consulations before and have huge doubts that anyone in power ever looks at the results.

SNP are all about independence. They are very keen to do anything which shows Scotland as different, special, separate. Look at us, we're so progressive and liberal and tolerant and so differnet from these nasty Tories in London. Don't you want to live in a country where everyone is welcome and tolerated? Well that means we have to be independent.

I told them that making self-ID open to tourists would be a great way to turn Scotland into a favored holiday destination for predators. Hey, we may have shitty weather, but you can flash all the women you want in the changing room down at the swimming baths and it's perfectly legal!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 26/01/2018 00:10

Done. I too wanted to confirm if they meant sex or gender.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 25/01/2018 23:52

Thank yoi for the reminder I started before but gave up in frustration - covered by this

It's like being asked, "If grey sky be blue, should the trees have the potential of pink leaves?"

AngryAttackKittens · 25/01/2018 23:40

Already did it! Hopefully my homeland's government can be trusted with data more than the Labour Party can...

MarSeeAh · 25/01/2018 23:04

Done!

And I took a deep breath and agreed that they can put my name to my comments.

shakeyourcaboose · 25/01/2018 22:45

I have tried filling this in but working for gov body as i do I have the fear. I think I will have to set up an unidentifiable email add to do so.

RadicalFern · 25/01/2018 22:35

I'm filling this in now. Hilariously it asks whether I think the self-ID process should be available to everyone or just to Scots. I have written:

"What will it matter? People can just "identify" as Scottish and that'll be that. If people are allowed to legally 'change sex' on their own say-so, I hardly think a little matter of nationality trouble them."

My comments are getting more and more snarky as I go on. I think they're very silly questions...

hugoagogo · 25/01/2018 22:22

I have done it, who knows what good it will do.

ButchyRestingFace · 25/01/2018 22:21

Done. Scottish, resident in Scotland.

Self identify as a free range haggis.

MarSeeAh · 25/01/2018 21:42

Phew! It's hard work. I'm getting increasingly sarky as I go on.

First line of my response to Q7 is "You are kidding, right?!"

okMaybeIAmATERF · 25/01/2018 18:54

@ArcherieAnnie : it's easy to sign up for a new email address at gmail or somewhere else, and forward it to your real one but not otherwise connect it to your identity, if you want. Let me know if you need help. It's important that people not be put off filling this in.

Bravenew · 25/01/2018 18:13

I just started filling this in and came to the same issue of writing a reason that wasn't "because your question is stupid".

I'll go back to it later.

I was getting a bit ragey just reading the first page of questions. :(

DodoPatrol · 25/01/2018 17:50

Sent it now, under an old email address that I can check if I need to.

For the non-binary bit, I essentially just wrote 'Non-binary applies to anyone who isn't a walking stereotype, so no.'

I flatly refuse to believe that anyone sane is deeply distressed by not being allowed to change their name and pronouns daily like their contact lenses.

grasspigeons · 25/01/2018 17:33

I identify as Scottish
I eat haggis and have a tartan blanket

k2p2k2tog · 25/01/2018 17:23

Done - I'm resident in Scotland.

grasspigeons · 25/01/2018 17:23

I couldn't work out the non-binary section at all. What is did it mean - I think id given up by that point.

Yes it feels scary giving your email address to the government who are rubbish at controlling data and on a controversial issue.

ArcheryAnnie · 25/01/2018 16:37

I see they require you to give an email address.
It says something, doesn't it, that doing that for a government organization feels risky.

This. I've filled it out without holding back. I've not yet found quite the courage to press "submit".

Maryz · 25/01/2018 15:39

I kept wanting to say "is that sex or gender you mean in that question?"

I couldn't get my answers in any way cohesive at all - yy to the pink leaves quote.

NKFell · 25/01/2018 15:37

I've done it but it is a complete load of shite!

It's like being asked, "If grey sky be blue, should the trees have the potential of pink leaves?" -

It really is MarSeeAh!

MarSeeAh · 25/01/2018 15:19

I started to complete it last night, and am struggling for the same reasons as Maryz. The whole thing is a nonsense, and it's quite surreal having to respond to questions and propositions which make no sense whatsoever.

It's like being asked, "If grey sky be blue, should the trees have the potential of pink leaves?"

mineallmine · 25/01/2018 15:18

Done

Maryz · 25/01/2018 14:56

I was having a look at that, and I just want to post "don't be ridiculous" in the comments for pretty much every question.

Which I don't suppose is very useful [sigh]

SchrodingersFrilledLizard · 25/01/2018 14:37

Completed.

okMaybeIAmATERF · 25/01/2018 14:30

(I used an email address that gets to me, but which I have not given to anything but this consultation. So if it leaks, I'll know it.)
