Been called a Feminazi

Due to stating that harassment is a gender issue due to the fact it's incidence is much more higher against women. It was in a reply tweet to Scarlett Archer's "I know this isn't a gender issue as it happens to men too"; of course it does happen to men but it's way more likely to happen to women.

I'm usually pretty tough about my stance on this - gender does come into - but I'm unwell and feeling rough and it's really got to me today.

Time to buy one of these and wear it with pride.

AlternativeTentacle · 16/11/2017 10:27

It was fantastic. He was calling out Peter Hitchens for being victim blaming, condescending and misogynistic. And was called a male feminist pansy by someone who has a soft toy as their twitter pic.

I love Tim Burgess.

Anatidae · 16/11/2017 10:20

I see my teen obsession with the Charlatans was justified :)

AlternativeTentacle · 16/11/2017 10:19

Someone called the fabulous Tim Burgess from the Charlatans a Male Feminist Pansy last week on twitter. Within minutes he had mocked up a badge, and by the next day someone else had made some badges of which the spare was given to the first person to donate to a women's charity.

Wear the badge with pride!

ThisBigSky · 16/11/2017 09:55

Thank you everyone for all the lovely replies - looks like twitter have removed the tweets :-)

I agree, the heavily gendered aspect must not be ignored... It really bugs me when it is.

op welcome to the club!
Feminazi aka doing feminism right, well done you. Don't let the cockwombles get you down

QuentinSummers · 15/11/2017 21:25

Sexual assault isn't a gender issue. Being a man doesn't mean that you are u affected and being a woman doesn't mean that you are not a perpetrator. Acting like this is just a women's issue is dismissive and extreme.
Sexual assault IS a gender issue. Something like 80% of victims are women and 98% of offenders are male. How much more gendered do you want it to be?

I think it's dismissive to act like men are equally affected when that's patently bollocks

Anatidae · 15/11/2017 13:56

When people run out of cogent argument, they use insult and abuse. So you win.

You have dared to (to paraphrase Rebecca west) express views that distinguish you from a doormat, and hence you must be punished.

It still sucks. Carry on speaking out.

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 15/11/2017 13:47

You won the argument. You should be feeling smug not shit.

LeCroissant · 15/11/2017 13:34

I take that sort of thing as a huge compliment because it means whoever you're arguing with:

  1. sees you as a threat
  2. has nothing coherent or worthwhile to say in response to your argument
  3. Has made themselves look like an idiot
  4. Can be safely disregarded from here on in.

Meaningless insults are the preserve of mindless bullies. As soon as someone starts throwing them around then they've lost. They do it to shut you up because they know they have no comeback. I consider that situation a victory.

I know how you must feel about this, but the content of what they say is irrelevant - they don't care what the implications of their words are, they just want whatever words will shut you up. So you respond by not shutting up, ever.

Sorry you’ve been called that. I don’t have much to add. Previous posters have said it all. Usually it means you’re doing it right.

It is, for sure, a silencing tactic. Which means that what you’re saying is unwelcome. Women talking about the inherent power dynamic between men and women is always going to upset the men.

1DAD2KIDS · 15/11/2017 12:43

We seem to live in a world where terms like NAZI and Facist are thrown around feely and unasmebly by all sides of the political spectrum. I guess the trouble with this frequent miss labling is it waters down the terms and devalues the terrible historical impact of these ideologies. But then maybe it's the harsh connotations of these labels that attracts people to use them unreasonably and totally out of context.

DeleteOrDecay · 15/11/2017 12:20

Hate that term. I’ve been called it before, think it was in relation to the Adam Johnson case a while ago. It’s what people say when they have nothing to counter your argument. They feel it puts you in your place.

Those who most fear obsolescence are making the most noise atm. This will pass and so will they. Smile

PricklyBall · 15/11/2017 10:44

Flowers, ThisBig

For the "sticks and stones" brigade - this goes way, way beyond that. Someone has called a Jewish woman a Nazi for expressing a factually accurate opinion online. That is way out of order, and you should be ashamed of yourself if you can't see that.

For the "but it happens to men too" brigade - yes it does and that is shocking and terrible for the men involved. But that does not mean it is not a gendered crime. There are a higher percentage of women who are affected than men, and when one turns attention to the perpetrators it is obvious that it is an overwhelmingly gendered phenomenon. 98% of prisoners in the UK serving custodial sentences for sexual offences are male. To refuse to acknowledge that the pattern of criminal activity in sex offending is gendered is to lie by omission.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/11/2017 10:41

To ignore the heavily gendered aspect to harassment is unhelpful and will not help to address it as a widespread problem in society. The overwhelming number of perpetrators are male, and the victims of it are much more likely to be female.

The idea that expressing this fact might justify abusive name calling by anonymous trolls is absurd.

Elendon · 15/11/2017 10:36

Who hasn't been called a few names on the faceless internet?

My ex of 20 years called me a feminazi, the only person ever to do so. It was in real life as well and in front of friends.

It's meant as a slur on your character. Rise above it and judge the person who directed it to you. It's nasty and uncalled for. They say it to hurt.

Nonibaloni · 15/11/2017 10:34

I thought it was a rule of the Internet that once someone mentions nazi or Hitler the argument is lost.
It’s thoughtless and relentless like so much sexism. When I said prostitues were frequently raped that was similar to genocide according to the Internet.
If you have the strength call it out.

MadamMinacious · 15/11/2017 10:33

I've been a feminist (radical feminist if I must) since I was a teenager and heavily involved in it from reading, groups, volunteering and yes, teaching it. I'm not sure I need it or its divisions to be explained to me to be fair.

Ttbb · 15/11/2017 10:32

Well I would probably be a bit pissed off if I were a male survivor of sexual abuse of you said that tbf, possibly even upset enough to start throwing around stupid names. Childbirth is a gender issue, not allowing women to work or drive a car is a gender issue. Sexual assault isn't a gender issue. Being a man doesn't mean that you are u affected and being a woman doesn't mean that you are not a perpetrator. Acting like this is just a women's issue is dismissive and extreme.

I agree with other posters its a dreadful thing to say and must resonate with you all the more due to the circumstances

Thanks
Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 15/11/2017 10:27

woman

Had to work out what that was

woman11017 · 15/11/2017 10:15

To be fair sperm carrier is a very broad term and sort of lost it meaning.

1DAD2KIDS · 15/11/2017 09:50

To be fair feminism is a very broad term and sort of lost it meaning. You just have to look at the internal struggles of feminists in terms of transgender issuses, intersetionality etc. So just because someone says their a feminist I never assume what they are all about because the term incorporates some time a range of ideas that can be totally opposed. I guess this washed down spectrum is a result of the likes of Buzzfeed etc simplyfing things by saying things like if you want men and women to be equal then your a feminist? So everyone says I can dig that, I'm a feminist, without really looking or reading into it.

MadamMinacious · 15/11/2017 09:41

It's unfortunate and probably part of why I'd rather describe myself as egalitarian.

I'd rather be described as a feminist, there is no equality, we are not the same; women have less physical power, bear children and have been oppressed for many, many years. Equity, maybe equality - no. In these current times I'd rather be centring women than worrying about men etc. as well.

I hate the suffix of 'nazi' on anything it minimises what it stands for and quite often misses the point so I'm with you there but if people think asserting myself is strident then I'm inclined to think it's their problem these days.
