James O'Brien: what a twat

Explained in this link. Basically, he bullied and shut down a female caller who said she'd be frightened to share a changing room with men. He didn't just take an opposing view - he ridiculed her.

Yet another liberal bro reveals himself as a misogynist. And a stupid one. Even if he doesn't care about women in general, he has 2 pre-teen daughters. Will he really want them changing and showering with men?

Thanks nauticant

I knew i had missed something

Not much from what you are saying...but still something

Sorry jelly

nauticant · 17/11/2017 21:40

Rufustherenegadereindeer1, the comment by jellyfrizz was on the right thread. It was a response to (and quoted) a rather strange post from a few hours ago.

I enjoyed listening to JOB in the period after Brexit but as time went on I was aware that I was enjoying it like you enjoy eating junk food. Nice as a treat but if you eat it all the time it starts to make you feel nauseous.

ChakraLines · 17/11/2017 21:39

Do tell, Labtest, how did Sammy deal with JOB? Interestingly that convo didn't make it to the "James O'Brien's Top Ten Stories This Week" - an email with JOB's best bits circularised.

Jayfee - It might be the Sony Radio Award he's up for.

Labtest7 · 17/11/2017 21:28

If they are screening callers based on accent, grammar etc, they clearly slipped up when they let a man called Sammy on air during a discussion about Trump's travel ban. He exposed JOB for the fool he is. I did notice during that call, that he used exactly the same expression as he did when speaking to Kellie; 'This is clearly an area of expertise for you.'

Jayfee · 17/11/2017 20:29

Does anyone know the big radio award prize that James ob is up for? he was boasting about it on lbc..in his usual mock self deprecating way

ChakraLines · 17/11/2017 19:43

This is going off topic, but there's something else about LBC and that is how they choose callers. And that is to do with the accent of the caller. I am fairly well-spoken but am not chosen to go thru to air. However, my emails are accepted and read out. I have had a theory for some time, and that is the various producers who work for presenters are intent on giving air to (i) the glottal stoppers, (ii) foreign people, (iii) the angry & loud. Are they concerned not to give airtime to callers who speak naicely for fear of being viewed as ... what?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 19:43

Ive probably missed something

I frequently do

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 19:42

Its really off topic jelly

Are you on the right thread or have i missed something

jellyfrizz · 17/11/2017 19:35

Muslim people do not celebrate Christmas; they are not allowed to celebrate (in the proper sense of the word) a festival of the Unbeliever.

Sorry, I know this is off topic but: Christians are 'people of the book' not 'unbelievers' and Jesus is recognized as a prophet in Islam.

Jayfee · 17/11/2017 18:33

O'Brien's mo is the ok corral. He takes a view, usually does some crap nsincere self deprecation, then akes calls. Anyone who agrees with him is ok, the others are racist idiots. I mostly turn him off. Why can't there be more women presenters on lbc?

Flossie4 · 17/11/2017 18:22

*some use callers as merely a platform to exhibit their own opinion and cut them off at will to enable this.

I hate this style of dialogue or interviewing- I hate it even on R4 with intreviews with politicians I can't stand, but I want to hear the reasoning of people and then the response from another position, but so often they are not allowed this as the host has an agenda of their own.*

Exactly.
I am becoming sick of radio and chat show hosts with an agenda. They have no charm, have lost the art of conversation and debate and basically just want to air their views an use callers or guests as a punch bag.
James O' Brien has proved himself to be a biased, dictatorial misogynist. He cuts off/shames/humiliates/disregards anyone not agreeing with him which is not the point of a chat show.
It is common on LBC unfortunately. I called in several months ago and was basically dismissed because I wanted to argue against the premise of the host. I cannot bear to listen to such programmes any longer.
In fact most journalists and broadcasters now try to guide opinion. There is no neutrality. Their bias is the only thinking and only unworthy fools think otherwise and are given short shrift. They create scenarios and their opinions are given as fact. Listen to the BBC news.
O'Brien is exceptionally good at this. Broadcasting has hit a new low with his aggressive and dismissive approach.
Dare I say it but Farage is one of the few LBC broadcasters with the courtesy to listen to others and to thank them for their opinions and contribution. I have thought this on several occasions recently. The realisation was a bit of a shock!

Shelagh Fogarty utterly ballsed up a recent interview with Naomi Wolf who’d come on to talk about her sexual abuse. Shelagh F started the interview with a monologue about how women colluded with their abusers by not speaking up and standing up for themselves more. (She might not have meant it quite like that but that was how it came across.). Needless to say it didn’t go very well after that. Wolf was furious and SF didn’t seem to understand what she’d done wrong.

That link you posted is a transactivist propaganda site!

I can assure you, categorically, that autogynephilia is not a made up illness.

Three women on here just this week explaining what it was like to be married to just such an individual. Numerous sites devoted to the enjoyment of it.

And sites for trans-widows, women whose marriages collapsed as a result of it.

You can broadly divide trans-women into two. Homosexual transsexuals and autogynephiles.

Amongst transactivists AGP are the overwhelming majority.

Hence the rancorous division in the community between the ‘transwomen are women’ AGP individuals and homosexual transsexuals, known as ‘truscum’ by the former.

Your late transitioning men who were attracted to women, lately divorced and not effeminate, would have been AGP.

And they would have done their level best not to show it, because historically they were denied treatment. As the NHS were not about finance a fetish.

May I ask what your role was at CHX hospital? Because I find it concerning that you appear to be unaware of both this split in the community and the reason why women are concerned about AGP.

Backingvocals · 17/11/2017 17:52

God Shotsfired that is a whole new level of mansplaining.

I can't imagine Owen Jones had any time for Rachel Dolezal so how does he square supporting this encroachment? Is it just because it's for men and about men?

nauticant · 17/11/2017 17:51

For some reason TheHumanRace, your post brought this to mind:

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book

On the contrary, it seems to me that our friend Juno has been left with several real aspects of being a woman. Just not the ones they fucking cherry picked off their list of "nice bits of being a woman as I decide it"

“It looks like an angry monkey’s arse” I wept.
Do any of us look at our vag and think it is a testament to beauty? I know many mothers end up in a sorry state post birth, but they have to, by and large, just deal with it.

it’s got much tighter
Welcome to the sex that has an inexplicable condition like Vaginismus, where the body you were born with decides to clamp itself shut for no damn reason at all. I bet all those women feel really womanly.

It still bleeds occasionally
I can't even....WOMEN HAVE PERIODS EVERY MONTH, sometimes debilitatingly so, for days on end. Forgive me it the equivalent of an occasional vaginal nosebleed doesn't quite make me well up in sympathy. That's before you even start on things like endometriosis, fibroids, tumours...

And why did nobody tell me about the wet?
In all your years of research and delving into what it is to be a woman, not once did you come across the notion of wetness?

I went to see my surgeon and they are going to stretch me open and have a look. I feel like an old cow, I mean bovine, being checked for calf.
As experienced by every woman who's had a smear/most gynae procedures and, for sure, had babies.

I spend too much money on handbags now
You....woman you! You've got it now, the secret to womanhood - handbags!

What it means to dilate as an ongoing weekly ritual
I know women who've had cervical cancer who need to manually dilate too, often for life. They chose fucking cancer far less than you chose surgery.

And then off we go to fight for the right to exist. We go off into silence, often, and shame about not having sex and not having an easy time.
Now you're getting to the root of being a woman. Suck it up, buttercup.

ChakraLines · 17/11/2017 17:16

TheHumanRace - I'm trying to recall what it was that Shelagh Fogarty said recently that was supremely naïve that put me off her even more. It was either genuine naivety or an attempt to 'not go there'. She has a splendid speaking voice, I must say.

hingedspeculum · 17/11/2017 17:15

I agree with you, Datun.

The blurring of personal testimony vs. being a spokesperson for a group is troubling - particularly when young people will be accessing the material for guidance and direction. The latter doesn't require your diary of your week's sexual conquests. These appallingly written, highly questionable thought pieces seem beyond scrutiny because they are the irrefutable Trans Lived Experience.

I can't think of any other area of society where you could publish material describing your sexual fantasies against your name, when you are a patron and trustee of allied health organisations. Why are these notable voices so inherently sexualised? Can you imagine a Fellow of the Royal Society or a trustee of a disability rights charity producing articles for Broadly, Refinery29 or Vice, discussing their own fantasies and fetishes?

ChakraLines · 17/11/2017 17:10

Datun - I do not recall anyone diagnosed with autogynephilia. The men were quite an assortment in terms of appearance, age and their life histories. Some had been married and had children, some had remained single living either with men or women. A few were young, in their 20s. I remember a young man who was naturally small and dainty. When he dressed as female it was a very good result visually esp. as his Adam's apple was naturally small. I also recall a 6ft man, very masculine in appearance and body type. In one of the after-hours classes I saw him dressed in a dress but I'm afraid that he would never be able to pass as female even after hormones and surgery. His shape and gait was that of a truck driver.

ChakraLines · 17/11/2017 16:55

Bertrand - Both Whale and Dickin were quite brutal in that they showed that they do not tolerate fools, but never snidey. I still have a few recordings of Dickin which I listen to. He was a very learned man, widely read, could debate intelligently on any subject. I did not agree with all of his views of course, but he was a class act in broadcasting.

O'Brien's schtick is monologue a la Ronnie Corbett, and then when a caller points out something they have observed, a trend they have noticed or a personal experience which does not gel with JOB's world view he makes fun of the caller and encourages listeners to think the caller is lying. It is actually a tactic of the bully - checkout bullyonline.org

Datun · 17/11/2017 16:44

ChakraLines

That’s interesting. Did you, or the people in your department make a distinction between transsexuals with gender dysphoria and men with autogynephilia?

Or maybe there were very few men with autogynephilia? They would’ve been straight, not particularly effeminate and probably older, possibly married with children divorced.

I used to work in the Gender Identity Clinic at Charing Cross Hospital. I met all the transsexual patients, and I also helped out in the “deportment and makeup” class which ran after hours. Most of the people were male wanting to become female. The way that Trans currently is spoken of is quite different to what I understand it to be: they appear not to be serious about completing the process and instead want to retain their genitals, BUT revert to dressing in the original gender at will. This means people around them have to continuously adjust to whatever gender they want to be today.

The patients that we had at CXH were deadly serious about becoming the opposite gender – not for a few months, but permanently. They wanted and had gender reassignment surgery. Think of the effort required to adhere to a protocol that includes hormone therapy, living as the opposite gender for 2 yrs and then having a series of operations. While they lived as women, but before the op, I am not sure what public toilets they used; I think they planned their day so that they would not have to. At work, it was by consultation with the employer.
