I’m a mother of a young disabled woman who has been sexually assaulted, once by a male member of staff .
Eventually we took a leap of faith and she moved to sheltered accommodation, the promise of female only workers was a deal breaker .
If the GRA is passed, potentially she could have a worker who has never lived as a woman for two years and had surgery , still a man a second far as I’m concerned .
When I messaged my LMP , she informed me that neither she or her colleagues had never considered the consequences of this to our daughter and other vulnerable women. This includes women using Women’s Aid and Wimen in Prison .
The prospect of this is horrendous .

So much for addressing the issues.

Those who posted early on this thread, and haven't posted latterly will probably wonder what I'm talking about!

Hi - I booked to go to the Glasgow meeting but been sick with flu. With the consultation deadline so soon I would really like to get together with any folk - especially in Edinburgh - for discussion. I am new to Mumsnet, or rather I was on here in another lifetime, so you won't know me. But happy to vouch for who I am in any way possible. I follow a lot online and through twitter but don't have the discussions IRL.

I've been away from this for a few days - family crisis which is now resolved.

Are we still hoping to meet up sometime soon? If so, I'll start sending messages to those on the list Plectrum sent me, and any others who were at the meeting/posting here and want to come along.

Send me a message if you want to be involved, and ideas for where we could meet and maybe an idea of when would a good day/time.

Possibly one way to address this is to combine large meetings (to draw people in and spread the word) with smaller working parties that address more activist-oriented issues. Perhaps these could be more regional rather than based in cities? It just strikes me that on our side there is a lot of talk and little activism, whereas on theirs, riding on the backs of stonewall, antifa, etc. they are very skilled and organised activists.

I hate to say it, but this change in legislation is going to go through and then an awful lot of women are going to have to suffer from very horrible assaults before anyone will even dare to look at the consequences of the new GRA on women. Unfortunately, the first few women who are attacked etc will be ignored by police, government and media for fear of reporting transphobic stories, and not wanting to admit have made a massive misstep

I hate to say it, but I don't think that they will care very much if women start to get attacked. It will be just more water in that particular bucket.

I agree Pencils. We need to put pressure on public sector organisations and call them to account for the risk assessments etc they should do. Keep mentioning safeguarding, let them know that they will be under scrutiny. Peak trans everyone you can. This is about public perception.

I don't think this is a done deal at all. I think it's very significant that this has been kicked into the long grass by the UK govt. Everybody who cares about this should respond to the Scottish consultation, but should also realise that the GRA is one battle in what may be a long war. GRA makes very little difference except to the most vulnerable women (prisons) because all the 'guidance' is written as if self-ID is already a done deal.

Nobody dares use the exceptions in the equality act. Nobody. Something is wrong here.

I've been reading Fair Play for Women:

Scotland does not have devolved power to enact its own independent legislation regarding legal gender recognition. Nor was this power included in the recently enacted Scotland Act 2016 giving extra powers to Scotland following the Scottish independence referendum in 2015. In fact the word gender does not appear once in the whole text of the Act. However, Scotland does have limited powers to amend some aspects of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 in areas relevant to Scotland.

No, being honest I think it’s a done deal. All we can do is organise do that there is a consistent clear voice of reason speaking up for women’s spaces.

Feeling pretty depressed reading this thread. I’m too far north to have gone to the meeting but it all feels a bit pointless. SNP block vote plus Greens = it will go through.

Is there any chance of stopping this? My MSP hasn’t really responded much to me, even after I met her and she said she would get back in touch re likely timeline of the GRA process.
I totally agree that snp will be in a rush to get this through now that Westminster have put it back again. Nicola likes to get in there first

I'm tempted to dissect J's statement para by para because there is so very much wrong wth it. I'm holding back because I get the impression that J is quite vulnerable and I doubt J's statement has gone down well with the 'siblings'.
