They got Stephanie's surname wrong but other than that, they actually deserve clicks for this one.

Could I please direct your attention (if you haven't already spotted it) to the thread in aibu - one transgender man's complaint has resulted in toyshop changing their women's changing to unisex...

The serious answer is, I would guess, that they have two readerships: Guardian readers who remember the 1970s/80s/90s (the ones who haven’t entirely given up on them) and, and... safe spacers.

Datun · 05/11/2017 17:43

Oooops.

hipsterfun · 05/11/2017 17:39

It almost doesn’t matter if that was a typo, Datun.

Datun · 05/11/2017 17:18

But why print the articles when you know your leadership are going to disagree ?

hipsterfun · 05/11/2017 16:58

It’s all a bit ‘safe space’ over there, so fairly predictable which articles won’t allow comments.

Datun · 05/11/2017 16:43

The thing that really puzzles me about the Guardian is when they switch off commenting. They can only be switching it off because there are so many gentle critical comments, right?

So isn’t that telling them what their readers think?

Sounds counter-productive to me.

hipsterfun · 05/11/2017 16:41

It’s a pity the Guardian can’t muster some balance, but they’re in a bit of a bind on this issue.

HornyTortoise · 05/11/2017 15:31

Yeah I find msyelf agreeing with mail stories about the trans trend an awful lot. Also agreeing with most BTL comments on the articles. Which is so weird for me.

Its good that 'mainstream' papers are reporting honestly on it. Its unfortunate that it seems to be mainly the daily mail or the sun, who most associate with bigots in general...

Mumsnut · 05/11/2017 14:47

The Mail has indeed had some decent articles on the trans phenomenom lately.

Has dropped the ball (well, reverted to type) with this hugely offensive article by Peter Hitchens today.

You’re welcome. Also transgendertrend. A website set up by Stephanie Davis Arai for parents of children who are trans.

colouringinagain · 05/11/2017 13:12

Thanks Datum really helpful.

Google Lily Maynard. Her daughter came out as trans and eventually changed her mind. Both she and her daughter write about it.

Thanks notafish

Can anyone point me to any articles/vids from teenagers/young people who have questioned gender identity and not gone on to change their biological sex. And I guess, those who have regretted it...

notafish · 05/11/2017 12:01

colouringinagain I'll pm you when I'm off my phone and can access my pc.

colouringinagain · 05/11/2017 11:19

Notafish your approach with your dds sounds eminently wise. My dh told me off saying she's much too young.... But she's already exposed to and engaging with transgender issues via what she's watching on YouTube. That has also given me food for thought - how do you monitor your dds social media usage. My dd is a very sensitive girl and stuff like this has a deep impact...

Will go and read other articles...

Stopmakingsense · 05/11/2017 10:25

In the same edition today:

Web porn driving sexual abuse among primary age pupils, suicides in university students, body image anxiety through unrealistic images, crisis in recruitment of child psychiatrists, vitriol for Prof Winston for quoting peer reviewed studies on trans surgery success rates -

Yet no one in authority joining the dots and questioning why so many teenagers feel the need to opt out of their own biology???

Stopmakingsense · 05/11/2017 10:14

Notatfish - good to hear that your DD has seen something on social media about detransitioners.

Stopmakingsense · 05/11/2017 10:13

Today's article in the Sunday Times
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/new-guidelines-on-school-sports-for-trans-pupils-7cbh8jrqd?shareToken=9389348ba6f55ff3ed50b3acd66a6a72

"rigid views about what it means to be male or female" is quoted as the problem, which of course it is. However the campaigners - Mermaids et al - who presumably will be the primary influencers of the guidelines (to prevent suicide) are the ones setting in stone those rigid views.

But good for The Times for putting the other side too.

So watch out for introduction of those guidelines at a school near you.

notafish · 05/11/2017 09:50

Oops. Rogue apostrophe in DDs.

notafish · 05/11/2017 09:48

colouringinagain I feel I have had make a pre-emptive strike with my DD's now aged 12 and 14. When I first discussed transgenderism with them they were defensive as they already knew about it through the rose-tinted CBBC programmes. Recently I was talking about detransitioners with them and DD1 said she'd seen a circulated article on social media about someone who detransitioners. She said she hadn't realised that could happen and that gave her much food for thought. DD2 is a more vulnerable personality type so I'm monitoring her social media usage closely.

Yes, he went through a phase where he did look very feminine. Two or three years ago.

Not so much now, though.
Not that it should matter.

hipsterfun · 05/11/2017 00:23

he has the face of a girl

In make-up, Jazz looks like a girl wearing too much make-up. Otherwise, like many long-haired 17yo boys (and girls) Jazz would just look androgynous.

Recruitment drive? Really concerning.
