Is it really so bad to have a patriarchal household??

I mean, feminism is about equality right so it should be 50:50 in diff households ??

Well everyone’s telling me I’m wrong so I guess that’s half a debate 🙄

OP posts:

I can't see a debate.

DaisyRaine90 · 11/11/2017 14:31

Why would it not be battleax

I was asking a genuine question and it created a debate therefore yes the thread has remained open 😊

OP posts:
DaisyRaine90 · 11/11/2017 14:30

I didn’t say it was fine
I asked if it was ever fine

Or if it meant you could no longer distinguish yourself as a feminist

I believe in equality of the sexes but that means some households will have a patriarch and others a matriarch and the rest will be equal

I think I was asking whether you had to agree with 100% of something to belong to that group or could just agree with 80%

But yes all those bacon eating Jews and Muslims get to be hypocrites but feminists don’t 🙄

This is still here? Confused

There comes a point with any ideology where you have to turn round and say "actually, no, you're not an XYZ."

So, for instance, someone who says "I'm a socialist, but one who believes in off-shore tax havens, less tax for the very rich, banning trade unions..." - it's quite acceptable to say "You are not a socialist, however much you utter the words."

Or someone who says "I'm a Christian, but I prefer the bits about an 'eye for an eye' and stoning homosexuals to death to those pesky bits about loving one another, and I think apartheid white South Africans were right to interpret the bits about 'children of Ham' as giving Biblical support to racial segregation, and as for slavery, well it was good enough for Solomon..." - it's quite acceptable to say "You are not a Christian, however much you utter the words."

Similarly, if someone comes on here (with the express intention of being goady) and says "I'm a feminist, but I believe patriarchal family set ups where the man is head of the household are fine" - well then I'm going to turn round and say "You're not a feminist, not in the slightest, not one teensy tiny bit of a feminist."

Feminists can disagree in good faith, for instance, about prostitution (some liberal feminists argue for legalisation from a point of view of harm limitation) or even pornography (some liberal feminists argue that the problem lies not in porn itself, but in the conditions of its production, and that a blanket ban damages women's fight to reclaim their sexuality in the face of being sexually repressed by men with a madonna/whore complex). I don't agree with them, but if they're arguing from a starting position of "how best do we liberate women from male oppression?" then they can still claim to be feminists.

But any woman who thinks there are circumstances where a man should be boss of a situation simply because he is a man? Nope, that position is never, ever a feminist one.

DaisyRaine90 · 11/11/2017 13:56

Why is it severe under thinking to question whether a family with a patriarch could ever be a good thing? It’s in line with our history that families would be patriarchal and to some degree my relationship is (as he makes the big financial decisions as the main breadwinner) and I make the smaller decisions. Does this mean I can’t also be a feminist and believe in equal rights?? That was the purpose of the thread but I understand that feminism has become about positive discrimination not about equality.

Depressing thread. Feminists are often accused of over thinking, here's a brilliant example of severe under thinking.

It's bad to have patriarchal anything

Like he chose the shower screen style but I chose the bath. I’m choosing the curtains, throws, wallpaper and cushions, he’s choosing the coffee table and suite

Reddit is well worth a read.

The conclusion I have come to is that yes it is not anti feminist to let a man make a decision for you, it is anti feminist to not have a say but giving over your decision making is just part of a relationship

What a bizarre conclusion to come to. Giving over my decision making certainly isn't part of my relationship! We make decisions together (or if it's about ketchup on my burger, he knows that's a yes and can make the decision I would have made).

A person giving control of there life to someone else isn't anything to do with feminism, although if it's woman is expected to be giving it over to a man, then it probably does, given the context.

Battleax · 03/11/2017 14:54

It was when you started the AIBU yesterday about not wanting to use children's centres because you don't want to mix with poor people and the unemployed, that I concluded you were plain goady. Thankfully it was deleted.

DaisyRaine90 · 03/11/2017 14:50

I’m sorry anyway this thread digressed. The conclusion I have come to is that yes it is not anti feminist to let a man make a decision for you, it is anti feminist to not have a say but giving over your decision making is just part of a relationship 😊

I’m another who can’t see what your relationship dynamics have to do with feminism, op. are you confusing “feminism” with “women getting their own way”? Because that’s not at all what it’s about.

And in answer to your question of, is it such a bad thing to have a patriarchal head of the household, then I’d say yes it is, and I don’t u derstand what a head of the household is even for, to be honest. Gives me an image of a victorian patriarch sitting by the fire bullying his children and belittling his wife, to be honest. Just doesn’t translate to modern life at all.

museumum · 27/10/2017 22:56

Our household doesn’t have a “head”. I find that an odd concept. It has two equal adults and some children. My childhood family was the same.
