First glimpse of Starfleet officers in the first fifteen minutes are two women, a captain and a first officer. Not only that, but the first thing they talk about is if they are lost or not. Seems a good start so far.

With all the bad news going round, I just wanted to share something good.

Well it couldn’t really be any worse than Enterprise (of which I made it through 3 episodes and 1 Decon scene before giving up)!

QueenOfTheSardines · 18/10/2017 20:28

Hello late to the party :)

I was a bit worried about the klingons in ep 1 and said to DH where are the female ones? They've made it a little more different to tell them apart but then oh look there were a couple. Also why have they got religion? What's with all the egyptiany stuff? Why does it always have to be egyptiany stuff? We had plenty of klingon ritual etc to go with so why go down this sub-stargate route?

Disappointed that they killed the captain she was great.

Michael (why is she called michael?) is getting on my nerves which is a shame.

Just watched the latest episode and it is MUCH more explicitly violent than previous trek universes and I don't like it. Star Trek is always about more than that... I know it's the way of things these days but I'm not keen. Why couldn't we have the sort of star trek that you can sit and watch with your kids? Meh.

The whole business with the spores and the animal thing really reminded me of a ?voyager episode I think it was, it felt unoriginal. And in the last episode she threw what looked like glitter at it to make it better I mean come on.

Anyway, mixed. I am gripped and irritated both, will definitely stick with it, it's miles better than enterprise which I tried so hard with but was just, well a no from me.

Will michael give us some good pontificating in the traditional manner of starfleet captains? Or will someone else? Shatner gave awesome monologue and started a fine tradition Grin they better not drop that. I want my moral / ethical messages slammed right into my face thanks Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 18/10/2017 19:28

I think this episode is the one where I actually started to care about any of the characters, well only Tilley and Stamets so far. I really don’t like Lorca, but I don’t think we’re meant to?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 18/10/2017 19:22

Sonequa Martin green is getting to do loads of this stuff. I wonder if she has a great agent or is political about it or if it's just a zeitgeist thing?

I was watching an episode of TWD series 6 or something when I suddenly realised I was watching three (count 'em) women of colour in a long scene and they were talking about how good they were at killing shit. Grin

It's slightly depressing that that is worthy of comment but great that it is starting to happen?

teaandtoast · 18/10/2017 19:21

I haven't watched this week's yet but I'm struggling to care about any of the characters. The only one I liked is dead.
I can't stand stroppy characters like Trip in Enterprise and for me, Michael falls into that basket too.

I want to like it, dammit!

MrsFionaCharming · 18/10/2017 19:18

Yes, CBS in the US, Netflix for the rest of the world.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2017 19:12

Why did I not even know this was happening? Is it on netflix or something?

MrsFionaCharming · 18/10/2017 19:11

I wasn’t massively impressed by the first couple, but I think it’s gettih better. Plus it’s easier to care now we’re getting to know the recurring characters.

(Though I feel like a bad Trekkie for saying that so far I’m enjoying The Orville more!)

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 18/10/2017 19:01

I really wanted to like it. DH watched the first episode and was excited to tell me that the leads were not only women, but women of colour.

I got three episodes in a just got bored. I haven’t watched the latest one as I simply don’t care.

MrsFionaCharming · 18/10/2017 18:55

Oh, I missed that bit!

Hoppinggreen · 18/10/2017 18:52

That's because she was sexually abusing the other human captive
Thought it was a bit dark when the abuse survivor attacked the Klingon femal captain when they escaped
And the F bomb was dropped !!!
Really enjoying it

MrsFionaCharming · 18/10/2017 18:48

Was anyone else slightly disappointed by part of this weeks rpidode? Lorca was captured by L’Rell, a female Klingon, so the first thing he does is call her ‘honey’ and ask about her sex life?!

ISaySteadyOn · 03/10/2017 16:28

One of the many strengths of Star Trek has been its ability to relate fiction to the politics of the real world.

I found the first two episodes interesting in that the Federation's approach was shown as not always the right one. They did not understand that Klingons require battle for respect. Not death, battle.

I like that they appear to have a female character with autism. Whilst Autistic people are still massively under represented on TV, all the ones that do exist tend to be male (and fit the ‘savant’ stereotype). I think some female representation is great to get rid of the idea that only boys can have autism.

ijustwannadance · 03/10/2017 12:56

The hair thing is more to do with her upbringing and current mental staight.

She grew up with foster parents (Spocks mum and dad) trying to fit in on an alien planet. When we first see her, her appearance/hair/behaviour is typically vulcan.

She meets the Klingons and all that goes to shit. 20 tears of supressed emotion/starts a war etc. So now we are seeing the emotional, broken side of her which is reflected in her more human, natural appearance.

Enid yes the hair thing was pointed out in the feminist frequency podcast! Although even though it is less tamed in ep3 it still looks styled to me, I’m no expert on black hair though. One of those eternal space mysteries, how the women generally manage to maintain impeccable hair and makeup. Whenever Janeway’s updo came a bit loose, that’s when you knew Voyager was in real trouble Grin.

Was slightly bummed in ep3 when it was pointed out how unusual Michael was as a female name, I know giving female characters male names is the Bryan Fuller’s ‘thing’, but I was kinda hoping that by the 23rd century we’d be beyond that!

Hope you don't mind me joining the debate.
I really loved the two leads in the opening episodes. But I will be interested to see how they split the main characters on the new ship Discovery. From the short clip they showed on 'Next Trek' It did look like there were other female characters too.

I did find it much darker than previous series, which i think can only be a good thing.

MrsFionaCharming · 29/09/2017 22:07

I think one of the Klingons was female, but since it was the heads of the ancient houses they would normally be male (see random DS9 episode where Quark marries a Klingon woman?). Though of course, that's a stupidly patriarchal concept in itself.

ISaySteadyOn · 29/09/2017 21:33

Patricia is right. There are definitely female Klingons. There was a wonderful scene in Next Gen where Worf explains Klingon courting.

No, I agree, Kickass that it isn't hard to do. It just struck me. I've never seen Battlestar Galactica though.

OP posts:
KickAssAngel · 29/09/2017 20:36

When Battlestar Galactica was filmed, all of the crowd scenes had 50:50 F:M and a range of different races. All the time. As if it were natural & normal.

And a female civil leader, & male military, as well as 2 top pilots, one male, one female.

Not hard to do.

PatriciaHolm · 29/09/2017 20:28

Klingons do indeed have males and females, the latter being if anything more aggressive. (nerd hat)

ISaySteadyOn · 29/09/2017 16:57

Hang on, are we completely sure that Giorgiou is dead? Her body was not brought back after all.
