For anyone interested there is a debate about the new legislation and gender this Wednesday evening in South London

Miranda Yardley and the Julia Long are speakers. I will definitely be attending so hope to see a few of you there.

Thanks for the new footage.

Flowers for Maria

Just wanted to share this blog I just read - it blew me away
sisteroutrider.wordpress.com/2017/09/15/punch-a-terf-rhetoric-encourages-violence-against-women/amp/

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 15/09/2017 19:00

and SnowCamo - completely intentional - fails on first go round because of the wrist strap (yeah for sensible-ness!), then you can see the only reason they're still in the huddle around Maria is them trying to get it off her wrist, and he comes around for another go and runs off once it's achieved.

The Met can clearly see what's happening here, and I hope they take action on this.

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 15/09/2017 18:58

Wow - that's very clear now what's going on - and yes, that guy in the pony tail threatening the women from the TRA side that went to try and break it up - Christ - everything screams to stay away from that guy.

SilentSilverLights · 15/09/2017 18:55

Yes, pretty scary. And somewhat clearer.

BeyondNoone · 15/09/2017 17:57

I don't know how anyone can argue with footage that blatant.

Well I do. They're delusional.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/09/2017 17:55

Silent that guy with pony tail is pretty scary Shock

SilentSilverLights · 15/09/2017 17:43

Footage from a different angle

SporadicSpartacus · 15/09/2017 17:19

Thanks Datun. That does make more sense. I have watched the edited video and that also helps in terms of figuring out who is doing what to whom.

I'm also seeing from some 'well, if you turn up to a protest you are at the mercy of the dumbest person there and can expect some rough housing' - it's infuriating. They didn't go to a protest. They were trying to hear a talk, and they could have done so in the original venue they booked had someone not seen fit to make so many credible threats of violence that the venue pulled out.

It's almost like there is a knee jerk 'something bad happened to a woman, how can we make it her fault?' thought process at large.

BeyondNoone · 15/09/2017 17:01

Imagine any other scenario where a gang in their twenties tried to mug a woman in her 60s, where she does her best to defend herself and her property. It'd be headline news (at least locally, and I imagine the red tops would take it up too) - "little old lady (sorry Maria! Grin ) fights off gang of thugs"

But put the magic 'trans' word in there, and she's the aggressor cause they're just soooo oppressed. Hmm

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/09/2017 10:48

This is just so old. Women always deserve it or however we react when attacked is the wrong thing to do. This is just make violence wearing a wig and frock (except they didn't in this case).

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 15/09/2017 10:41

She defended herself from robbery, tried to prevent the attacker taking her phone, but she is accused of starting it.

Or worse, Edinburgh Trans Health said that it doesn't matter, just by existing, by holding her own opinion, she deserved violent attack.

I feel even more for Magdalene Burns - if that's what Edinburgh Trans Health think, the environment for her up there must be so toxic.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/09/2017 09:17

Just in case this does proceed to court, it's possibly wise not to speculate too much on here - especially seeing as the victim of the assault's already posted on the thread.

I've personally been surprised at how I've reacted when I've been assaulted - sometimes I've frozen, sometimes I've fought back. Adrenalin's a funny thing.

I was really shocked at the minimising of the assault in feminist groups on fb - instant whatabouttery. Telling women off for being concerned for the victim of a politically-motivated assault. It's nasty.

There will be a lot of energy put into denying it happened, or denying that the perpetrators did anything wrong.
This is a group of people who work very hard to ensure they control perceptions of what is happening.

SporadicSpartacus

Have you seen the second video from this link? It's another annotated one, but it goes into further detail.

Datun · 15/09/2017 09:15

From what I understand from Maria (the victim) she was trying to stop the person picking up the phone. As it turned out, she got her phone back in the end, minus the memory card.

The frame by frame analysis that Gallus Meg does, indicates to me that it is a tried and trusted method of robbery, (rather than attack). She identifies three men, working in unison.

They didn't realise her camera was strapped to her wrist, which put a spanner in the works.

That and the fact that, despite being 60, she is a fit and hardened feminist and her primary reaction was fury, rather than fear.

She defended herself from robbery, tried to prevent the attacker taking her phone, but she is accused of starting it.

Women everywhere, allow yourself to be robbed in broad daylight amongst people, otherwise you will be held responsible for getting punched in the face.

SporadicSpartacus · 15/09/2017 09:06

Thanks SuperLoudPoppingAction and BetsyM00 - completely get that organiser fatigue is a thing. Happy to organise. Want to do it right.

Going back to the topic of the thread - I shared this on Facebook and got some disappointing feedback, i.e. initial doubt that the event had happened, then when video evidence provided, frame by frame analysis to prove that she deserved it.

While I've watched the vid and looked at the screencaps (and personally don't hold the view that women deserve to be punched in the face for having opinions, ever) - I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on at some points. In particular, Maria appears to have hold of a (small-ish, converse wearing female) protestor /after/ the camera throwing. What's that about?

BetsyM00 · 15/09/2017 08:17

Copied from the other thread in Chat:

GallusMag also has the full timeline of events with screenshots:
gendertrender.wordpress.com/2017/09/15/timeline-of-trans-activists-beating-a-woman-in-hyde-park/

For any lurkers who wish to get involved please see this thread which details the background of the proposed bill and has template letters for contacting your MP.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/09/2017 08:03

There's a list on another thread with ideas, but one thing is, as well as attending events, it would be lovely if anyone with the capacity to do so could organise some.
Maybe start by joining a planning group and watching others with a bit more experience, then start your own.
It can be exhausting when others expect you always to be the organiser. It sometimes feels like everyone's sitting back and waiting for you to do the next thing. Or not just waiting - criticising too.
If you don't have the capacity to be an organiser, it's definitely useful to offer help on the day, and just generally be positive and deliver any feedback in a constructive way.

SporadicSpartacus · 15/09/2017 07:45

Lurked naicely for a long time. Mumsnet has been instrumental in shaping my views about sex, gender and how nekkid the emperor is. This is the kick I needed to get into real world activism, so thank you all for posting your accounts of events, and most importantly being sane and articulate in an increasingly crazy world.

What can we practically do? When's the next gathering? Mp letter is being started today.

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 15/09/2017 07:22

I'd heard of them before, knew they were pretty militant, but hadn't realised they'd gone full trans.

led by trans women - does no-one in the organisation read that and have a pause?!

That New Statesman article is atrocious. Not just biased, but just also poorly written. Admittedly the only New Statesman articles I usually read are by people like Glosswitch and Miranda Yardley, who both write very well, but I can't really imagine that that standard is usual for the publication is it?

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 15/09/2017 06:26

If Sisters Uncut are led by transwomen then Uncut takes on a whole new meaning.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/09/2017 01:32

Sisters Uncut (who I had not heard of until yesterday but who appear to be a bunch of ranty, shouty hard-lefties) have this to say.

Sisters Uncut will ALWAYS be inclusive of and led by trans women. We support our sisters!

I've been waiting for Gallus Meg to report this, hoping she would. She is a sleuth extraordinaire.

Watch the second video. (Before it disappears).
