Why are feminists so aggressive?

This, or something like it, it always being asked. People say that the FWR board on here is scary and hounds out people whose faces don't fit. That women are always being told they can't be feminists if.......And so on. And so on.

In my experiences, you are much more likely to get an aggressive response if you express a feminist point of view than the other way round. Is it just me? Or am I missing something?

There have been plenty of interesting feminists threads recently, where everyone seems to be holding their own- but the same old accusations keep coming up.

Because there is so much that is desperately wrong and so few people who realise it or understand it. I don't think any feminist means to be aggressive but it's so hard not to be angry.

Seachangeshell · 08/09/2017 09:40

Synonyms for 'staunch':
stalwart, loyal, faithful, trusty, committed, devoted, dedicated, dependable, reliable, steady, constant, hard-working, vigorous, stable, firm, steadfast, redoubtable, resolute, unswerving, unwavering, unhesitating, unfaltering
"a staunch supporter of the cause"
Damn me and my aggressive language.
These words describe many feminists on this board and I admire them for it.

"Of course you are, but actually have the arguement with them. Dismissing them as handmaidens or cool wives is lazy."

Yes, I know. But sometimes, when you've had the argument......

And it's frustrating that all this have the argument, don't use lazy blanket terms, no insults, always be measured and calm, never be mocking and so on and so on always seems to be one way traffic......

I think the fact things are in print means there's loads of opportunity to take things the wrong way. I remember one posters commenting to me that she had "seen me on lots of threads like these"

Initially I felt a bit threatened, like she had her eye on me or my card had been marked. But she probably just meant literally what she said, she had noticed me posting before on similar threads. Just an observation, but for 10 seconds it felt a bit threatening (ok threatening is definitely an exaggeration here, but you know what I mean).

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 08/09/2017 09:35

What do you do if women behave in awful ways? Are women not allowed to be angry with or outraged by the behaviour of other women

Of course you are, but actually have the arguement with them. Dismissing them as handmaidens or cool wives is lazy. Actually lass put it best.

As far as I'm concerned anyone resorting to using them about another poster has lost the argument and I will disregard any further posts by that poster on a thread

Seachangeshell · 08/09/2017 09:31

I used the word 'staunch'. It means 'very loyal and committed in attitude'.
I'm sorry if you find that offensive.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 08/09/2017 09:22

Well put Dervel

Also it is bloody fashionable now to be anti-feminist.

I don't feel the need to conform to a feminist menu, whether rad fem or whatever. But I do consider myself feminist. I have also made some 'un-feminist' choices, such as being a SAHP, shaving my legs and other things that some feminists have a strong opinion about.

As far as being aggressive. Er, fuck off to that Grin. If I decide to respond aggressively to a poster that is pissing me off, surely that reflects on me, not other feminists. We are not all the same. If you substituted "women on MN" for feminists here, I'm sure most posters would agree that not all "women on MN" are aggressive. Some are certainly, but mostly on the AIBU board.

And actually, a lot of critics of the FWR board on this thread are pretty aggressive in their language, with "staunch" feminist and the like.

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2017 09:21

It's difficult.

"The main thing I really dislike is women being called handmaidens and cool wives"

Do you object to the terms, or do you think that women never behave in the ways that attract the terms?

As far as I'm concerned anyone resorting to using them about another poster has lost the argument and I will disregard any further posts by that poster on a thread.

I object to the terms.

Also fwr is a pretty rad fem space, so the bar is often set very high. Sometimes women get the handmaiden label slapped on them for something pretty minor. Or vast swathes of women get the label slapped on them.

As with most things, attacking / criticising the person and not their arguement or view is a poor way to conduct a discussion.

Dervel, that's a brilliant post.

I have a recipe for home made baked beans that is utterly delicious. And try the Hairy Biker's sausage casserole before rejecting the idea completely.

My experience of being here is sure sometimes people are rude, but no more so than anywhere else, and no one "side" is any more or less likely to be rude than the other, but literally the slightest negative or frustrated comment from a radfem is pounced upon with glee as embelemtic of some massive trend.

This.

Datun · 08/09/2017 08:13

"...aggressed upon". I had to look that up to see if it was a real phrase. Now I know it is, I'm totally stealing it.

(In a polite way, obvs.)

Dervel · 08/09/2017 01:39

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm a man, I don't identify as a feminist I don't agree with everything I read here, but I've not felt attacked or aggressed upon in any way. Either for being a man or for my views.

I think one possible reason for that is I don't make an automatic assumption that when class analysis is going on it's about me personally. I would also prefer not to bottleneck a conversation with another namalt derail.

I've also shared a difficult personal experience where i received nothing but empathy and support from each and every poster who awknowledged it.

What I find interesting is how feminism gets conflated with every individual feminist. If one meets a rude bus driver we don't extrapolate all bus drivers are rude. Yet any feminist happens to be rude that charge is leveled against feminism as a whole (or these boards). Why is this?

My experience of being here is sure sometimes people are rude, but no more so than anywhere else, and no one "side" is any more or less likely to be rude than the other, but literally the slightest negative or frustrated comment from a radfem is pounced upon with glee as embelemtic of some massive trend.

Ok sometimes people are frustrated and having an off day, but being aggressive/rude has nothing to do with the truth value of what you are saying. What is more important to you: exploring interesting ideas to new places or policing people on tone? My philosophy is as long as you're not pointing a gun or a knife at me be as rude/aggressive as you bloody well like! I can work out for myself what level of anger I can handle on any given day, and engage/disengage as appropriate.

I'd much rather interact with people being authentic to what they think/feel. Things are much more easily dealt with out in the open.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 07/09/2017 23:47

I've not been on a fwr thread in forever. I got a bit bored with the fwr section.
It was fascinating at first but I quickly found it a bit repetitive. The main threads I was interested in were ones regarding equal pay. But there was very little traffic on those threads (barely got over 1 page must of the time).

To be fair I've not looked recently so could have missed some decent threads.

The main thing I really dislike is women being called handmaidens and cool wives.

ftw · 07/09/2017 23:10

titania, me too, I've learned a lot. Still rarely join in though.

TitaniasCloset · 07/09/2017 23:09

I feel the same, especially on days when I cannot brain as I has the dumbs. It's harder to skim read this board. Still like it here though. I learn new things everyday.

ftw · 07/09/2017 22:57

sea, no, that's not what I meant at all. I simply meant that unless you're totally focused, concentrating and able to articulate a cogent point precisely, you'll either feel out of depth or get shot down pretty quickly. But I guess you made that point for me.

SomethingOnce · 07/09/2017 22:54

I don't feel like an idiot, but I'm not in a position to fully reference every post; it's a definite disadvantage.

Feminism is for all women. Not just those who have been to university.

I'm aware of that. Top feministsplaining though Grin

Seachangeshell · 07/09/2017 22:53

Oh, should the feminists who are not well educated enough go off to some lower class place to discuss their inferior ideas? Somewhere that's better suited to their lower level of intellect?

Ttbb · 07/09/2017 22:48

If you express an unfeminist view the majority of feminists will completely fail to engage and just call you bigoted, stupid, conservative, trump loving etc. Feminism and feminist views are fairly well accepted. When was the last time you saw someone non-platformed for saying 'men and women are equal' or 'women should be able to attend university'?

ftw · 07/09/2017 22:46

Feminism is for all women. Not just those who have been to university.

Yes. No argument. But these boards feel better suited to those with doctorates.

(I have several degrees yet feel like a total idiot here often.)

Ereshkigal · 07/09/2017 22:45

Feminism and women's rights.

Mirrorballfrog · 07/09/2017 22:44

Also, what does FWR stand for Blush

SomethingOnce · 07/09/2017 22:43

I meant the MN FWR boards ( didn't it used to be called that on here?).
