Jesus that TigerBeatDown piece is so fucking close to getting it.... it's weird to see a feminist site being so spot in when it comes to all forms of oppression EXCEPT plain old misogyny... on a porn critique piece.

Yes, exactly!

NoLoveofMine · 28/08/2017 02:58

Very much so DavetheCat. I stopped posting as I was so frustrated at how derailed this thread had got.

Some of the commentators were able to shuffle their feet a bit and make a tentative note that maybe? Perhaps? ..... but there was a tw who was so oppressed by the lack of trans in porn they had to make it themselves.. .

DavetheCat2001 · 27/08/2017 21:34

As in has been banned?

Yes. I probably shouldn't saying anything but I found her(is) comments totally inappropriate and goady.

Folks on this thread in particular did well to remain calm and dignified IMHO.

missy

A great shame i think

But not all men look at pornography, or continue to look so as you say what makes the difference

Missymoo100 · 27/08/2017 21:17

Rufus-
It probably does have an affect because it will be obscuring the view of what sex should be like, because it's presented in a way that's not realistic. In addition the brain was never ment to be bombarded with constant sexual imagery, it alters brain chemistry- the affect can be long lasting. If he's viewing a lot of porn then he will be becoming desensitised to its content, "normal" sex will not seem exciting anymore and this will translate to his actual relationship.

CeeBeeBee · 27/08/2017 20:27

I should hope so as her comments were very disturbing to be true. Just didn't add up.

Pleased to report that Coin has gone

tigerbeatdown.com/2012/05/11/missing-intersectionality-in-sex-positive-feminism-the-unaddressed-racism-in-porn/

This is from a super libfem sex positive porn loving source. Even they have to acknowledge there are serious problems.

Content warning for racism and sexual violence.

missy

I was thinking more of the effects on his partner

So a friend of mine (whose husband doesnt use this type of porn) is unhappy at the moment but as much as she is trying to make him happy generally...

Every time they have sex she is useless, not sexy anymore, doesnt do sex properly, just jibe after jibe

And i was just thinking that if a man is getting the wrong impression from porn that that would probably transfer to his wife, she is not doing the same things as he has seen on screen, or isnt as enthusiastic or really doesnt want to do that sex act etc

But like i said i have no real experience

Missymoo100 · 27/08/2017 15:46

It will probably have an effect but not to the same level of harm than an unhinged man.
One harm could be that he becomes desensitised to normal sexual stimulus, and thus won't get the same satisfaction from sex with his partner.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 15:38

Althought i agrree with virtually everything you have said missy

I cant help thinking that even if a relatively well adjusted normal man watches some of the horrors on the internet it must have an effect

So maybe not damaging to the woman on the street but definitely to his close relationships

But ive no idea really

Like lass says, those hunting the vilest have to watch such dreadful stuff, but hopefully they have help dealing with it

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 27/08/2017 15:37

I don't know exactly who or what this coin person is but I know this is not on the level. Until HQ gets round to banning, which I hope they will soon, I think people should not engage with it. We seem to get some questionable characters on here from time to time and engaging only encourages. Just my opinion.

Missymoo100 · 27/08/2017 15:37

I said on page 7, society I feel is losing its way. If people don't have strong moral values and are exposed to a constant stream of porn, then it's going to cause problems- you will have more bad people, with more exposure to the stimulus of porn, you will have more sex offenders and rapists.

Missymoo100 · 27/08/2017 15:24

The frequency of viewing, along with its constant availability all over the Internet means it's easier than ever for men to become desensitised

Missymoo100 · 27/08/2017 15:22

Been trying to find the article, found something similar:

When having sex or watching porn, dopamine is released into a region of the brain responsible for emotion and learning, giving the viewer a sense of sharp focus and a sense of craving: “I have got to have this thing; this is what I need right now.” It supplies a great sense of pleasure. The next time the viewer gets the “itch” for more sexual pleasure, small packets of dopamine are released in the brain telling the user: “Remember where you got your fix last time. Go there to get it.”

Then it becomes a vicious cycle, needing the dopamine hit, and the more the viewer watches, the brain desentitizes and needs something more... in porn addiction the viewer may start looking for more extreme porn to get the same dopamine hit.

I do think most men won't be too affected, not to the point of actually doing another harm. I think when you get a certain type of man and a certain set of circumstances it may lead to offending behaviour.
For example a man who had issues with women to start with, grew up in a violent home, poor social skills, unemployed so can look at porn all day, etc.. then the addition of porn can lead to the perfect storm where the individual becomes a danger.

thesleepystorm · 27/08/2017 15:11

coin

How many men work in the sex industry instead of being on the dole?

SophoclesTheFox · 27/08/2017 14:58

But then coin has made it abundantly clear she doesn't give a marmalade sandwich for my sympathy or my feminism, so Carry on with the Mean Girl Feminist narrative. It always goes down well in certain quarters.

SophoclesTheFox · 27/08/2017 14:55

Much as I think the adult coin is being very unpleasant here, I can still feel sorry for the child she was. And if none of it's true, then I also feel kind of bad for the person who would want to make up that back story. You've caught me on a soft day.

SophoclesTheFox · 27/08/2017 14:55

missy, I was responding to your points from yesterday that it's OK for "most" men to view porn, and that they won't end up using it to fuel their violence against women, and that it's somehow unfair to men for feminists to look at porn and get depressed about what it says about the male psyche. I can barely even read the titles of porn without wanting to become a hermit and never meet another human being ever again, it makes me so depressed about the meanness and violence of human nature.

I agree with much more of your recent posts today about the desensitizing effects and seeking ever greater extremes. But it's all damaging on some level, I think.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/08/2017 14:48

That makes sense. The porn is validating extreme thoughts which might otherwise have been kept only as thoughts.

The individual is seeing these being acted out- well , maybe it is not that bad and at the same time being encouraged to even more extreme thoughts.

There has been talk on this thread , as there always is when the subject comes up, of real jobs which are dangerous and difficult and "sex industry jobs".

One of the worst jobs in the world must be the one analysing porn to try to identify locations/ children.

It must be enormously rewarding when their efforts lead to the rescue of women and children but what horrors must they endure to get to that?

Missymoo100 · 27/08/2017 14:24

In fact on the contrary, I read somewhere but can't remember the source that viewing porn causes a reaction in the brain, repeated viewing then desensitizes the brain to that stimulus, therefore the viewer goes on to seek more deranged forms- sometimes happens in porn addiction. This maybe translates into actual sexual preference- ie the viewer then wants to do more deviant acts to get off because normal stuff doesn't just cut it anymore. So no I don't think porn is harmless and ive never said that. I do think the individual would have a propensity tho in the first place.

Alittlepotofrosie · 27/08/2017 14:24

If coin wanted to derail the thread, then she's done a marvellous job.

Back to the subject, pretty much all porn is harmful to society and extreme stuff like rape porn is even more so. The fact that some women choose to make porn and supposedly enjoy it doesnt negate the experience of thousands of women who are trafficked, coerced and forced and don't have a choice in the matter. Its very easy to find videos where a woman very much looks like she's actually being raped. Even if she consented then it doesn't really matter if the end product is giving the impression that women don't really mind being raped. Its still just as damaging.

But i don't believe personally that anyone who isn't damaged on some level can enjoy making the sort of porn that the man in the link accessed. Its terribly sad that for some women the choice to put food on the table involves being anally gangbanged and ending up in hospital, and even worse if she somehow believes she's making an empowered choice. This sort of thing normalises violence against women and if this is how our young men (and women) are learning about sex, they really don't stand a chance. I worry about what society will be like when my young children are teens. I think we are sadly a long way from it being unacceptable to buy a woman's body for your own sexual pleasure.

Missymoo100 · 27/08/2017 14:19

Sophaclestge fox
So I have a question to the cheerleaders for porn as harmless fun, (got and missy I think, if you're still here?).
Please don't put me on this bandwagon, I'm not!
All I said was that porn isn't in itself a cause, that there must be something wrong with the man to search for more deviant forms. I don't think pornography is harmless, as I said in some of my other posts.
I was criticised yesterday because I said NAMALT sort of thing. Looking back I was a bit hot headed, but I do think that even though it wasn't intentioned to mean "all men" it can still be off putting to people interested in feminism who man bashing doesn't appeal, and some of the earlier comments seemed to carry that sentiment.
