Woman jailed for ten years for false rape accusations

Can we discuss this case? It's interesting for lots of reasons, including that the sentence she has been given for making multiple false accusations is over three times the length that one of the men who was falsely accused was given for actual rape

In his sentencing statement the judge was very harsh with his words. It pretty much implies that he didn't believe she was vulnerable or mentally ill.

“This trial has revealed, what was then not obvious, that you are a very, very convincing liar and you enjoy being seen as a victim.

“The prosecution described your life as a ‘construct of bogus victimhood’.”

“These offences usually began as a drunken attempt to get your partner’s sympathy or perhaps to arouse her jealousy.

“They each began impulsively, but what is particularly chilling is the manner in which you persisted in making allegations which you knew were untrue even to the extent of committing and repeating perjury.”

That's one reason the sentencing was so harsh.

Not familiar with the case, and obviously these repeated accusations are without question criminal. However it's quite common with those who commit these false accusations it's a way of acting out from a buried occasion where they were raped, not taken seriously or otherwise powerless.

These accusations in such cases are less about a malignant desire to hurt men, but more a desperate plea for someone, anyone to please take them seriously. The fact that in this case on one occasion she injured herself to sell the deception gives me pause enough to consider that possibility.

I'll leave it to other people to decide wether she should be in prison or not. I honestly don't know, perhaps she does. However if my suspicions prove correct she also needs help and support to get to the bottom of this behaviour.

I'm not condoning women who make false accusations, but it's often worthwhile putting the crime into context. It is a really tough topic as on the one hand the criminality is indisputable, so from a law and order perspective I can agree with the sentence. However as a human being if her behaviour is a direct result of trauma inflicted long ago I cannot help but feel some measure of compassion and empathy is warranted both towards her, and when we tend to discuss cases such as this.

"Miss Beale is a 25 year old vulnerable defendant who has been diagnosed as suffering with an emotionally unstable personality disorder of borderline type. She has been granted special measures in the trial. An intermediary will assist her if she gives evidence"

fuckit - when she was found guilty it was reported a little while ago. She has just been sentenced, hence the recent reporting

My first thought was that she must be mentally ill, but reading the details of the case the prosecution said she knew exactly what she was doing.

They read an impact statement from the first victim and he very much was deeply affected by what happened.

What this woman did was deeply wrong and the men falsey accused absolutely are victims.

Finding it hard to believe anyone would feel sorry for her or defend her. She is an abhorrent, disgusting creature that , for financial gain and attention, lied about being raped and sexually assaulted by 15 men one of who was jailed for a long time whilst completely innocent and NO virgin he was not found guilty of another rape, it was the same case, he was her first victim.

To anyone feeling bad for her, Imagine someone like her accuses your DS or DH etc. Just how horrific that would be.She should be sent to jail for a lot longer. All the women who have genuinely been raped and sexually assaulted are set back by scum like this. She should rot in there.

SurreyLanes · 25/08/2017 00:57

@noeffingidea

She has borderline personality disorder which is a mental illness.

OlennasWimple · 25/08/2017 00:46

Surely it's both about the direct consequences for others, but also the wider impact of your lies. So the Chapman and Wells parents had to wait for a number of days more to find out what had happened to their daughters as a result of Carr's actions. Ali Dizaei brought the police force into disrepute (and there was a direct victim of what he did, BTW, as someone was held for 24 hours on a completely trumped up charge)

I agree that the scale of the lies in the case in question seems to be without parallel (though I haven't done a huge amount of digging on the issue, will carry on looking as I find perjury a really interesting offence (I know that makes me very sad...))

Oleanna you are not comparing like with like. None of the cases in that link compares to the quantity of offences here. Only one- Shannon Matthews resulted in terrible consequences for others.

Mumof56 · 25/08/2017 00:35

@dawned What's the provenance of the linked document? It looks like someone's undergraduate dissertation. Did it pass?
Of more relevance is this comprehensive review of false rape allegations in the UK

as I clearly already stated. It is not an undergrad thesis that didn't pass as you are trying to suggest.

It was wrote by Tessa van Der Puten as her masters thesis and supervised by Dr. Lens Tilburg University. And yes it did pass

now, I'll have a read of you disguised guardian link

OlennasWimple · 25/08/2017 00:31

I'm really hoping that one of those clever law review folks will blog about this case, and what it means in relation to perjury case law.

From a lay perspective, it would appear that repeatedly lying about rape is the gravest thing that anyone can do, as this woman has been given a sentence longer than anyone else in the last 100 years.

That makes it a graver offence, based on the sentencing, than providing a false alibi to your boyfriend when he is accused of the double murder of two young girls (Maxine Carr got three years); lying about the kidnapping of your daughter / girl friend's daughter for a protracted period and holding / allowing her to be held drugged in the base of a divan bed for some weeks (Karen Matthews and Michael Donavan got eight years each); and various instances of abusing public office (Ali Dizaei got three years, as well as the various MPs who have lied and lied again)

Good. Now that we are all agreed how serious rape is - so serious that people who lie about being raped are subject to the maximum sentence - let's see that reflected in how people who report this heinous crime to the police are treated, and how people who are convicted of rape get sentenced.

noeffingidea · 25/08/2017 00:20

surreylanes she's mentally ill.
Or a dangerous sociopath.
There's no evidence of mental illness. If she was mentally ill then presumably her lawyer would have brought it up in her defence.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 25/08/2017 00:15

There is a lot of "whataboutery" on this thread- both from posters posting harrowing accounts of rape and those citing examples of wrongful convictions.
None of them are relevant.

I'm not sure there is anything to discuss beyond , yes her sentence is appropriate.

FerretsAreFeminists · 25/08/2017 00:15

Excellent point.

OlennasWimple · 25/08/2017 00:12

One man rapes,NAMALT and all that shit. One woman lies about rape and sadly(as years and years have shown) all women are (at best)possible liars

Yy

Article about the review

FerretsAreFeminists · 25/08/2017 00:08

I think most people agree that her sentence was appropriate.

RebelRogue · 25/08/2017 00:07

@LassWiTheDelicateAir that i can agree with. I can "understand" the reasoning/mindset behind the comment.

cantthinkofabloodyname · 25/08/2017 00:07

What a nasty, fucked up bitch she is. I may be in the minority in saying this, as it is posted in Feminism, but I think the sentence that she got is appropriate. What if the men she accused of rape were your father, husband, brother, son?
I saw my brother's life get destroyed by a false accusation (not sexually motivated) and he ended up with a prison sentence. The truth was discovered after he was released from prison but he had already lost access to his kids because of it.

FerretsAreFeminists · 25/08/2017 00:04

And they're all liars.

Yes that's exactly what I said. Well done.

Mumof56 · 25/08/2017 00:02

@Ferret

So you have no research then. Nadia, nothing. And they're all liars.

Very good

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 25/08/2017 00:02

The judge's comments and from some of the PP's. For every case of rape that is discussed there's always people shouting "but .,but.. false allegations, women lie, women regret it the next day, women change their mind". This type of case just gives them more ammo

The judge meant well but I think he expressed himself badly.

FerretsAreFeminists · 25/08/2017 00:01

On a more serious note, I might read it tomorrow. I just cannot be arsed right now.

FerretsAreFeminists · 25/08/2017 00:00

@Mumof56

Yes because researchers can't possibly ever be biased and cherry pick their data to fit whatever they're trying to prove Hmm

And they're women you say? Well that settles it then. It is of course not possible for women to be misogynistic, no sir-ee. Hmm
