I am Jazz is a reality show focusing on the journey of a teenage transgirl/woman whos parents supported transition from aged 5 and has been on TV since aged 6.
Now aged 16.

I don't watch the show as I strongly disagree with everything about it. However I briefly saw a clip of the next episode as the tv happened to be on the channel that airs I am Jazz I had been watching say yes to the dress and it was about dating.

Jazz goes to a sort of speed dating event where everyone is sat in the dark. Jazz wants a relationship, which is normal for a teenager however Jazz does not tell the boys/men that they are trans and in fact male.
As they are in darkness Jazz feels that if they get to know each other without the barrier of seeing each other/being trans it may lead to a relationship.

For me this is totally wrong.
Why should it be ok for Jazz or anyone to withold the truth about a very important aspect of who they are?
Plus I would imagine there to be some very upset and angry teenage boys when they find out they have been duped and lied to.

I remember a good few years ago where a man killed his partner after finding out on a TV show that they were trans. There have been a few similar murders over the years.
I am in no way condoning the murder or harm of another person I am just highlighting the danger that can come if you lie about the sex you are and it should not be encouraged as no relationship can survive on lies.

I just wondered what other peoples thoughts are on the subject of lying about your sex to the people you date?

When I was looking into this last year, there were several articles about why researchers wouldn't touch this with a barge pole

^ don't I know it ... :(

I guess I have some hope that medical or pharmaceutical researchers will research some issues - especially the increased and off-label use of lupron. Surely they have learned their lesson from Thalidomide?

Datun · 06/08/2017 10:52

What's frightening is we've seen this before. Rotherham, Cologne, Saville.

When I was looking into this last year, there were several articles about why researchers wouldn't touch this with a barge pole.

When you think about how discussion is shut down everywhere, I don't blame them. It's almost professional suicide to go against the narrative.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/08/2017 10:49

Yes - I know GenderTrender, but when it comes to research I tend to prefer research databases of academic, scientific and medical research. I think gendertrender is great, but they also have their biases. I also have my own views, but like to make up my mind from a range of sources and particularly those that are in some way scientifically rigorous. Of course, a lot that is published in academic journals also swallows the cool-aid. I guess what I am looking for in terms of considering medical issues is objective research.

My comments about there being scant research relate not to wanting to find more research (necessarily), but to my concerns that there is a trend towards medical intervention without there being adequate research.

SummerflowerXx · 06/08/2017 10:46

I am struggling to get past why anyone would think building a vagina out of one's colon would be a good idea.

Datun · 06/08/2017 10:38

You can type in keywords into the top right hand search box on Gendertrender. They usually have something, on almost everything.

Whenever there are organisations that are pro trans, it's always worth cross-referencing them with anything you can find on Gendertrender.

They are hated by the trans-lobby for both their profound disagreement with it, but also their comprehensive and extensive research.

gendertrender.wordpress.com/?s=Wpath&submit=Search

Even armed with the knowledge that GT are in disagreement, you can't help but emerge with a rather cynical distrust of many of these organisations.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/08/2017 10:29

Datun - I agree and a couple of years ago when I did some searching I found similar.

My main worry is that most of the studies I find highlight the lack of research on a whole range of medical issues associated with transgender medical and surgical interventions. That's what worries me the most, especially in the context of there being a shift toward these interventions.

From what I have read, post surgery regret is rare, in terms of the surgery. But overall mental health and happiness does not improve.

That's why John Hopkins University stop doing it. Despite them being the forerunners of the surgery years ago. Although I think they may have started again, because of the upsurge in demand.

It seems as though it alleviates gender dysphoria, but does nothing to improve the actual lives of people having it. So it's an odd one.

It's also far easier to accept if it's an adult asking. Apart from anything else, the maturity of the genitals will improve the outcome of the surgery.

Someone who has a normal libido can take responsibility for the knowledge that it might be compromised. Not so with a child.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/08/2017 10:19

And of course I chopped the bit off about lack of research...

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/08/2017 10:15

I found this from a 2016 publication (book) called "Principles of Transgender Medicine and Surgery". The main point is that there is little research across age-groups.

Hahaha!!

Datun · 06/08/2017 10:10

I don't have access to those, no. I googled about 10 combinations of words along the lines of

Trans teenager sexual function
Cross sex hormones and orgasm
Libido and lupron
Side effects of HRT transgender medicine

Etc.

Mermaids have a fact sheet that is so useless and woolly, it set me off all over again.

SummerflowerXx · 06/08/2017 10:01

Yes, my question Datun was also where you are searching, plus what search terms you are using. Can you access Medline, or PubMed or similar academic database? I can but I don't have time right now. However, if you let me know the search terms, I will have a look.

Datun · 06/08/2017 09:59

What I generally do is just Google search, then drill down into links that I find to get the scholarly article.

I'm not a scientist, so sometimes I get bored struggle to understand.

There are scholarly articles to confirm that children with gender dysphoria, if left alone, will often grow up gay.

It dovetails with the two types of transwomen. Androphillic (attracted to men) and gynephilic (attracted to women).

Your old style transsexual is far more likely to be androphillic. Whereas a cross dressing fetishist is more often attracted to women, including the thought of themselves as one of them.

Blanchard is the person who did all the studies. Transactivists hate him. (Because he highlighted autogynephilia).

Let's not mention the so called 'Ava Wells' trans person without also mentioning Magdalen Berns a a lesbian who has gone up against Ada J Wells and been banned from the Edinburgh LGBT society. Just so that 'Ava' doesn't get all the airtime and we are reminded that there are voices of dissent.

I completely agree. Statistics are the only way to understand this.

I have just spent a fairly fruitless half hour trying to find out whether puberty blockers followed by cross sex hormones always results in a compromised sex life.

The most information I can get is that one's libido will drop and that drugs like Viagra would then be necessary.

I realised suddenly that Jazz Jennings is about the only teenager out there who is going through all this. The reason I can't find much data is because there isn't any. Jazz is the guinea pig.

The stuff that has got me really cross is adult transwomen complaining about loss of sex drive and sexual function, but then saying that it's always like that for women anyway which therefore means they are truly women.

They are equating their loss of sexual function with the fact that a woman's orgasm isn't just a question of rubbing something up and down for five minutes. "It often takes me hours to achieve an orgasm, but then, that's what it's like to be a woman anyway, and that's so good to know".

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/08/2017 09:40

I agree with Adalind. Part of the problem is 'what is a mental illness?" Is getting your rocks off by dressing as a woman a mental illness or simply a fetish? I'd also say that what we do know is that the TRA line that there are many sexes and genders and that it is possible to be born with a penis but 'really be a woman' and have one's sex misassigned at birth is utter bollocks, so to speak.

WhichJob · 06/08/2017 09:39

Datun, interesting that the trans Ada Wells is appropriating women's history by taking the name of a famous feminist as his transgender name.

AdalindSchade · 06/08/2017 09:34

Nobody knows what causes people to feel trans.
Children like jazz who identify with the opposite sex from a young age are very different to adult men who cross dress for sexual gratification and then go on to transition full time, and they are very different to teenagers who call themselves non binary, and butch lesbians who want to be seen as men, and young women who want to remove their breasts and appear male to escape feminine stereotypes or dissociate from sexual abuse.

Old fashioned transsexuals probably do have a level of mental illness. Rejection of the physical body isn't a mentally healthy position. What we do know is that trans identifying male people don't have brains or hormone levels that are different from any other men.
